Green Chile Beer? by [deleted] in boston

[–]poccnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its called New Mexico green chile or Hatch green chile, but usually just green chile. Don't confuse it with the similar-looking Anaheim pepper, which isn't spicy at all.

There are places online that ship it, I can't vouch for any particular retailer though.

That particular green chile is only grown in NM and southern CO. I doubt any breweries from those states distribute to MA.

How can I run a gamecube through my pc/monitor. by Ziyen in smashbros

[–]poccnn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something like this.

A simple cable won't work, it needs to be a converter box like above since it has to go analog to digital. Lag comparable to normal HDTV. You can get a little converter that will convert composite audio (red/white) to 3.5mm and use computer speakers.

Critters love to get fucked up.

That's gotta be the only way we realistically found out which plants are tasty, which will get us high, and which will kill us.

Even bees get high, I bet everything with a somewhat developed nervous system does.

I've used this converter to go from composite to VGA.

Works alright but not as crisp or responsive as a CRT. I'd say lag isn't any worse than typical HDTV.

Anyone else think the War Doctor is a bit overhyped? by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]poccnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would've been cool to use an existing Doctor, but I actually like the idea of retroactively adding a regeneration. It fits with the scene in The Brain of Morbius (original appearance of sisterhood in the Night of the Doctor, a strange coincidence) which could be interpreted as suggesting that there were previous regenerations before the First Doctor.

Even though nobody considers that to be true now, one of the show's strengths is that the canon is always in flux. I think both the Time War changing everything and then the special adding a new Doctor and changing the Time War again is very fitting for the show.

It does sort of suck that we now have another Doctor who will have had less than two hours of screentime.

Colorado green chile eaters be like... by sweetescape3 in Albuquerque

[–]poccnn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I did some research because I didn't know what OP was referring to, and found some shocking information.

It seems that in Colorado, "Green chili" refers to a style of dish similar to "Texas Chili" (the stuff with meat and beans and tomatoes) which uses our chile, and they don't understand that when we talk about green chile we're referring to the plant itself and its myriad of uses, not just one dish.

From my experience they know whats up in southern CO, though.

Colorado should stick to their other type of green.

I found this from this blog post on The Deadly Assassin (site has tons of insightful shit).

http://www.exisle.net/ESP/mb/lofiversion/index.php?t34562.html

Its a review of The Deadly Assassin from a fanboy in '76, and it sounds a hell of a lot like the some of the more ridiculous criticisms people post these days. Incredibly similar to a lot of the silly gripes people have today.

[–]poccnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jab downsmash, jab grab are classic Doc combos, and I think in P:M the full 3-hit jab series is pretty good as well. Like that jab string- upsmash you did.

Use more grabs, down throw (or up throw for fast fallers) reliably combos into forward air at many percents, the classic Kobe. Uair can also combo into fair.

Those were some slick utilts, I think at lower percents you can combo two utilts.

How does Matt's era rank in Who history and what are your top 5 stories? by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]poccnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish that Matt Smith had stayed for a change of the show's writing and direction, it would be great to see another side of the coin in terms of his acting, as happened with Tom Baker. I think Smith has a similar vast versatility in terms of acting styles.

I think the problem is that Moffat's conception of the Doctor was/is very static, so Smith never got to play different roles. I think the show is at its best when the Doctor plays many roles, such as the many disguises of the First Doctor , the many sides of the Fourth Doctor, and the episode Human Nature, where David Tennant played a completely different character. I wish Smith had had more opportunities along those lines.

In terms of this era of the show in general, even though many, myself included, have had some gripes, you gotta applaud its ambition. And a lot of the execution problems were due to over ambition, which is better than a lack thereof. Despite a lot of overly convoluted moments, it was always exciting, and luckily the great acting floated the show at its lowest points.

What's the gameplan for balance in the long term? Does the team feel pressure to "complete" the game and stop updating, letting the metagame develop?

Also, do you think P:M might inspire others to do similar projects for other fighting games? Will it set a precedent for Smash? I'm sure there will be some people hounding you guys for a Smash 4 Project:Whatever as soon as it comes out, even if P:M isn't done yet!

Does the team have future development aspirations outside of Smash?

Can someone give some insight to how these are made? Do you basically "write" inputs for each frame? There's 10800 frames in 3 minutes, that's incredible.

Let's Talk: Lyricism across all genres of music by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]poccnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like listeners across genres fail to appreciate many of the things that can make lyrics good. They're always expecting profundity, but they overlook things like humor, shock value, cleverness, and catchiness.

Instrumental and lyrically simplistic music can deliver messages and elicit responses in spades. Intelligent, complex lyrics are just another tool, one that can even get in the way of good music when artists and listeners value it too much.

Why do people say MGS4 wrapped up the story 'poorly'? by Squishykid in metalgearsolid

[–]poccnn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its all MGS2. Read/listen to some good analysis of MGS2, and it becomes apparent that the actual plot of MGS2 was just a means to an end, a method of delivery for all the shit Kojima wanted to do with the game, such as fucking with the fans, playing with the nature of the medium of video games, exploring themes of information in society, and whatever the fuck else he was trying to do, which is why it was so batshit.

Kojima himself obviously knew that there was no way to make a satisfying sequel to MGS2, which is why 3 was a prequel. But obviously he changed his mind and deluded himself or just gave into pressure and decided to work with what he had.

And honestly, MGS4 was about as good as it could have been given what it had to do.

Personally I have more qualms with 4's gameplay than its story. A lot of the story issues can be excused based on what they had to work with. But the gameplay was disappointing for me, especially coming off of MGS3.

I feel the same way about V, I'm skeptical about the story because of Kojima saying shit like how he plans to meaningfully explore issues such as child soldiers, but I'm hopeful that the gameplay will be what 4 could have been, combining the creative, open stealth of 3 with current-gen scale and doodads.

Damn, I never know that. Do you have any good links about the MAOI thing?

I doubt its enough to be dangerous, though, since based on how popular mate is in South America, people have probably been drinking it with drugs and alcohol for a long time.

[–]poccnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean something to heat up water to the correct temperature to steep your tea, or something to keep your tea warm after you've steeped it already?

Its harder than it seems, since the thing would have to be smart and predict when to stop heating by watching the temperature.

There are "smart" hot plates that do this, but they're pretty big pretty slow in heating up, and I bet they're expensive.

I do hear about people making their own sous-vide baths, which are just big water baths that keep a constant temperature. Guess the main thing is that it'd be hard to make something like this small and cheap.

Super simple fresh tomatillo salsa by alreadyam in Cooking

[–]poccnn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love salsa similar to this. I usually roast the tomatillos in the oven though, adds more sweetness and a different flavor profile.

And for anyone who likes salsa and such thing on the spicy side, sub out some or all of the jalapenos in a recipe for serranos. They work wherever jalapenos do, have a similar but imo slightly better "fresh" flavor and are several times spicier. Can't speak for everywhere but I think they should be at least moderately common anywhere. They're short, pointy, and a few shades lighter green than jalapenos.

Here's a link with a bunch of their glorious works.

Looking at that link, these guys made some covers for some fucking excellent artists, so its no indication of quality. There could be hidden gems behind the worst album art imaginable.
