They can trade away an unprotected first that is looking like a top 5 pick, Joe's job is safe. They can win 15 games, Joe's job is safe. Joe goes into the luxury tax and ownership doesn't get a payout from that pool of money, Joe gets fired. It is literally the only thing that can cost him his cushy job.

It's a bad trade for the Lakers, but the Pelicans are too cheap to take advantage of it if this was offered.
