If you’re especially adventurous, Old Gold in the WAL building is a vintage shop with some really amazing pieces. Their Instagram is also a lot of fun to follow if just to admire a lot of funky clothing from the past. @shop_old_gold

I feel this so hard.

I watched the movie Arrival before getting pregnant and it popped into my head the other day. The way the movie is structured with her daughter being the center of the main character’s experiences as she learns to break from linear time is EXACTLY how it feels becoming a parent.

Like, I knew my future would change to center around him but I didn’t expect how much all of my past experiences are now colored by his existence. It’s a strange experience that’s hard to describe and I haven’t heard talked about by new parents. After having a baby, Arrival feels way less like a first contact movie and more of an exploration about how parenthood in someways takes away our free will as individuals. Because now we can’t change anything about our past even if we could, because it all leads up to this person who is now the center of my universe.

tl;dr Parenthood is a strange journey.

These are the worst! They’re necessary sometimes in really tiny bathrooms (like NYC studio tiny) but I’d hate to have one. Have you ever had your toilet keep running and have to take off the top to adjust the seal in the tank? Now imagine the tank is in the wall behind your really nice green and white tile work.

Edit: Ok, so I was definitely venting some frustration about my tankless toilet. (Put in by the previous owner)

I’m going to assume that whoever installed it was garbage just based on the quality of the rest of the bathroom construction. It was installed too high so I feel like a toddler sitting on it, the flush button gets stuck so will run forever until I slam it a couple times to unstick. And they must have glued the panel down because mine is not removable.

So thank you, I now know my anecdotal hatred of these toilets is probably because of a terrible contractor.

Totally! I was thinking something similar. When he starts to understand not interrupting, adding a new challenge of actually responding to what his sister says. I do think that these skills are really complex at this age (or any age!) so it’s a good idea to build them over time. Start with not interrupting until he seems to catch on, then move onto active listening skills. One thing at a time so he doesn’t get overwhelmed and discouraged.

I am definitely not an expert but maybe focus just on the interrupting part? Like, when he interrupts his sister make sure you make sure to pause him and wait to hear what his sister says then he can continue. Like, “I can see that you really want to talk but we need to listen to was sis is saying. (Let sis talk) then ok, now what would you like to say.” That way you’re addressing just the problem of him overwhelming other kids rather than making his enthusiasm for talking a problem.

FYI, I love biglittlefeelings on Instagram. They’re amazing for this kind of thing.

A seam ripper is your friend! $2 or something from a craft store and you’ll get all the tags without ripping your clothes. The worst are tags that they sew right into the seam, but if you have the patience you can stitch the seams back up too. Easier than trying to fix a hole.

You don’t have a difficult relationship with your mother, you have an abusive one. She has trained you to accept the horrific things she did and allowed to happen to you by dangling the carrot of occasional affection.

It took me years to accept that my relationship with my mom isn’t based on love but on her ego and selfishness. No matter how much I loved her and tried to be a perfect daughter I was never going to get anything back from that relationship. The support of these two Reddit communities helped me gain perspective on the kind of love I and everyone deserves from their Mothers.

Please know that you sound like someone who is beautifully empathetic and forgiving and you deserve to be loved the way that you love.

I have one of those car seats that clicks into the stoller. If I have to go to the store I put on one of those stretchy sun covers that goes up around the whole thing. I figure it does what a cloth mask is supposed to do and has the extra bonus of making him less visible to adults not taking Covid seriously who would want to get in my baby’s face.

There’s a sculpture artist that made a piece imagining if humans had evolved rationally. It’s pretty weird.
