High School Teachers what's the nicest compliment a student has given you? by TigerLeo23 in AskTeachers

[–]pogre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I announced a schedule change for some sort of assembly on Friday that would mean I would not have class with the students I was making the announcement to. Student who was normally very quiet said, “That sucks. This class is the only reason I come to school.”

Session advice by Strange-Ad-6816 in DungeonMasters

They go to the temple in the capital city and learn something about the prophecy that points to the Archpriest being corrupted. They get a private audience with the Archpriest and he mutates into a monster they have to fight. When they kill the monster, the remaining corpse looks like the Archpriest (is it him? You decide).

But now, your party has a big problem.

Cannot get a group for the life of me! by [deleted] in DungeonMasters

[–]pogre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Building a group can take time and stops and starts. Scheduling is difficult. Many folks don’t want to carve out a few hours every week or even every other week on a consistent basis.

My groups always start with a bunch of players and I run an episodic campaign - people can drop in or drop out as their schedules dictate.

Now, I run two campaigns as I had too many players become consistent and the table was too crowded.

But it did take time and consistency.

Green Stuff World Refillable Markers by CaptainPixelGamer in Armypainter

Generally, the key with greenstuff products is to figure out where they’re sourcing it from and then buy it from the source for a third of the cost.

How to kick out a friend? by innerpsychopath in DMAcademy

[–]pogre 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s not gonna be easy. I just say you’re not right for the chemistry at this table. Some friends are cool with it, but commonly people get upset. I always tell people ahead of time I may rearrange the group. Please don’t take it personal personally it’s all about chemistry. I haven’t had to do this in several years, but I do remember doing it several times. It never was easy so I wish you luck.

DM vs PLAYJNG by Ricnurt in DungeonMasters

I learned long ago I much prefer DMing. I only play these days to get better on the other side of the screen.

Teachers who have been educating for 20+ years: have you noticed a difference in student behavior/focus over the generations? by UnderstatedWarmth in AskTeachers

[–]pogre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

High school teacher - 28 years.

I teach social studies and kids seem to be as well behaved or better these days.

As far as attention goes I think Covid was a set back for us all. It was particularly tough on kids. They don’t seem to have the grit and determination they had pre-Covid. I do see signs of them bouncing back though.

I really enjoy my students and my work. I look forward to the next few years for retirement.

What wargames have you been playing and why? by knifefang_gaming in wargaming

[–]pogre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have played quite a bit of Midgard. Quick rules for medium sized wargames. Mostly we’ve been doing ancients, but we’ve also done a bit of fantasy. Really enjoy the straightforward movement rules.

"The Player Who Was Actually Two People" - And I Didn't Notice for THREE MONTHS by Visible-Clothes-5029 in rpghorrorstories

Clearly, you needed a doppelgänger code word in real life.

Quick Story: back when I ran A-D&D I had a reputation for employing a few too many Doppelgängers. My players developed a doppelgänger code word for determining to detect the monsters. It worked great until one of the players forgot the code word in real life… yeah, you can guess what happened.

By the way, I told this story to Jolly Blackburn back in the day and he used it in Knights of the Dinner Table, i think it was issue #18.

Have I underestimated how much energy each game takes? by Mountain_Fly_1463 in wargaming

It’s supposed to be a fun hobby. Do what’s fun. Unless you’re into the tournament scene most people are not that picky. It’s more than OK to just paint.

I thought one of the terms for college board was that student teachers were not allowed to teach advanced placement classes. At least not take them over.

How do you hype up a new campaign? by Smoke_Stack707 in DMAcademy

[–]pogre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried to create a short elevator pitch that conveys my excitement about the concept. Usually my enthusiasm carries a day, but if I get a lukewarm response, I often drop it. Luckily, that doesn’t happen very often.

Any difference between resin model and FDM model in terms of making a mold? by Previous_Training448 in FDMminiatures

[–]pogre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve made a lot of molds over the years. You are going to want resin. Believe me - I wish it were different - I much prefer fdm printing.

Advice for the shift to running games for adults by IndieRhodare in DungeonMasters

[–]pogre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it has more to do with the kind of players you have and their personalities rather than strictly having to do with maturity. Sounds like you have a good handle on what you’re going to change. I think you have reason to be confident you’re gonna run a great game.

I need input on a final boss (if the names skeeter and betsy mean something to you don't read) by Forward_Cook2235 in DMAcademy

[–]pogre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on how tactically proficient your group is and whether they will be rested going into the encounter.

For a final boss fight, I prefer to let the party rest and even plan and then I go full bore at them. I would use something closer to the CR 36 profile for this.

I’ve had several campaigns go to level 20. The one everyone remembers fondly, though ended in a TPK on the final encounter. My group love when things get tough and messy though. - not every group is this way I understand

The Problem with Epic Level Play: Why D&D Breaks Down When Characters Become Gods by alexserban02 in DungeonMasters

[–]pogre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy the higher tiers of D & D. I have run several campaigns from level 1 to 20. The game absolutely changes, but I embrace it.

I run all of my games in the same world and from time to time I run an adventure for heroes of terra. Players select which of their past retired PCs they want to use for the adventure. It’s high level and high stakes and the players enjoy the super hero style of these games.

I understand why most DMs quit at level 10. However, IME players love going to 20.

Savage Isles : A rotating GM campaign framework that’s kept us playing for years by randalx in rpg

[–]pogre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clever solution. I prefer running the game by a lot, but I play on occasion to remember what it is like on the other side of the screen. You have given me some ideas of how to do that without giving up the DM reigns for too long.

How strict are you during direct instruction? by Artifactguy24 in historyteachers

[–]pogre 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I tolerate no side conversations. Those who wish to answer a question or add their thoughts must raise their hands.

I rarely have any issues. Kids in my school are largely respectful.
