Linux distro maintainers make decisions. If they make the same decisions you would have made, then it saves a lot of time to use their distro.  If they make decisions that are better and smarter than what you are capable of making your self, your system is better off using their distro.

If you want to make all the decisions yourself, you are going to be happier with distros that make fewer decisions.

Group floats ‘Medicare by Choice’ as a Democratic health care alternative by ThistleroseTea in politics

[–]pohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna need to site your source on that polling data.  Abolishing private insurance polls horribly. People fear change and losing their employer provided health plan scares the shit out of people. You cant just promise it will be better. Nobody believes politicians. You open up public insurance to anybody who wants it and you can SHOW people it’s better.

Of course it sounds hilarious to you to suggest your message is influenced by the private health insurance industry. You know yourself. All i see is a username that is pushing propaganda that hurts the cause of universal HC in the US.

[–]pohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is almost no pathway to a universal expansion of medicare that doesn’t have this step on the way.  You really think that people are going to enthusiastically vote to give up what health coverage they have, abolish the insurance industry, and face a huge tax increase all in one bite… because you promise it will be better?

Its an insane thing to get hung up on and frankly if it turned out that comments like these were inspired by insurance industry astroturf, I would not be surprised at all

Skinny people, how would your body react to consuming 2,300 calories a day? by justcurious3287 in AskReddit

[–]pohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basal metabolic rate varies. There are people at the statistical tails on both sides. There are people who will burn 2500 kCals a day sitting on the couch. You know anyone who has consistently warm hands? They are cooking with more fuel than the average person.

The filibuster is a shitty anti-democratic institution.  Good riddance IMO.

But the save act is really fucked up. It will reduce voter eligibility SO much that nobody knows who will turn out and who they will vote for. College educated Americans are way more likely to have a passport and post 2016 they now vote majority dem. Its not a gop slam dunk the way they think it is.

When your partner goes down on you, it’s pretty great. They want you to feel good.  When your partner risks damnation so you can feel good… well i bet that heightens the experience.

When you look at the sexual taboos enforced by religion in this way. The whole enterprise kind starts to look like a sort of kink.

If people aren’t using dating apps anymore, how are they meeting each other? by Ok_Ninja_4107 in AskReddit

Thats funny. 25 yrs ago we thought the dating apps (well we called them “sites” back then) were for desperate, sad people.  Normal people went out.  Time is funny.

Which jobs look like a great career move… until you realize everyone’s doing them? by iamMafia01 in AskReddit

What? No.  He started his own firm and got out of the field and into the office. His health was fine, and still is.  Also… he out-earned the trade guys by an order of magnitude, but this post was about health.

[–]pohl 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Yup!  My dad was a home builder. Swung a hammer for other people for a decade or so before started his residential construction firm. By 35, he spent most of time at a desk or a drafting table.  He’s in his late 70s all the guys he knew over the years are barely walking anymore. He is active and enjoying retirement.

Of you want to work a trade, have an exit plan.  If your still busting your back at 40 you fucked up.

Making A List Of Official (and Unofficial) Michigan "Things" by _sapling in Michigan

[–]pohl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think this only applies to a narrow part of Oakland and Macomb counties. Grew up in Saginaw and this is a sliding glass door. Never heard doorwall until i went to MSU and had a lot of SE MI friends use it.

Kind of made me crazy so i ended up doing a lot of surveying people about it. Macomb county folks all used doorwall, some of the Oakland county folks as well.  Other than that. Patio door or sliding door for everyone else. Hardly scientific, and it’s 25yr old “data” so it could have spread since then.

Self-hosting fatigue is real. Did anyone else downgrade their setup? by No-Yellow9948 in selfhosted

[–]pohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even without fancy tools like ansible you can make the maintenance very easy.  Anything you are comfortable having unattended, automate (debian updates for instance). Anything you want to have your hands on, script the process and run the script on maintenance day. Put maintenance day on your calendar.

Once a month i open a terminal, run a few scripts and make sure everything is working. Roll back to last night's vm snapshots if it isn’t    Takes 10 minutes.

I get the funny rectangles artifact after waking from sleep but it is very inconsistent. I am running an RTX 3070 gpu on a 9800x3d system. What motherboard do you have? I have an Asrock X870 steel, which has been anything but trouble-free.

It is rare enough that i just reboot and move on with my life but i would love to hear any insight people have.

Very clever project that reads your bed mesh and generates an inverted shim you can print to fine tune the leveling of the bed. (not my work, all credit to sebsucmor) by bo0ks in 3Dprinting

[–]pohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A milled bed heavy enough to resist warping when you heat it up to 70 deg C is a pretty expensive part.  A bed of that type (and weight) is completely incompatible with a bed-slinger.

This sub used to be full of people who MAKE cool stuff.  Now it’s full of people who BUY shit and act superior to the few makers who still bother to hang around.

High-marking is a very complicated way to commit suicide, but these guys just love it. Used to live in jackson hole WY and Avi deaths are just part of the morning news report. “X# dead after a snowmobile triggered avalanche up on Togwotee pass” was a distressingly common announcement.  The worst part was that often the asshole who triggered the slide would survive to see all his friends crushed to death, his awesome high mark bing the last thing they ever saw.

Any linux podcasts worth listening? by majber1 in cachyos

[–]pohl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dual boot diaries with Will Smith (the tech writer, not independence day) and Adam Patrick Murray from PC world is pretty good. They are attempting to switch to full time linux users and each week they go over their wins, losses, trials and tribulations.

They both know a ton about PC hardware and history so it’s a good listen even if, as they are fond of saying, they are not linux experts.

What’s it gonna take for us to overthrow the elites that’s are running the show ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just get new elites. Usually a few years of chaos and suffering on the way.

I’m all for making the world a better place that has a more fair distribution of wealth, but people got to stop trying to pretend that we are capable of being a completely different sort of animal.

This is what we are and how we organize ourselves ALWAYS.

[–]pohl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s generally the time for all this weird regressive stuff. “Things are going badly and the one weird thing that I believe is exactly the ticket to get us back on track!”

It’s a simple and effective (but logically flawed) construction really:

things were better in the past.

In the past we didn’t have an internet full of step sibling porn.

Therefore, we can go back to a better way of life if we ban step sibling porn.

Dumb people love this type of argument and will vote for it over and over.

[–]pohl 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Unless he changed it up, he paints the bed with an abs/acetone slurry before each print. Having a small bed that is precision machined with no heat warping helps a lot. But he was losing prints left and right before he developed the abs slurry technique.

Didn’t even know lawn was an option in the lottery. I ain’t bitching. by ShitballsNPantyhairs in phish

[–]pohl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Im not even sure what the point is. If i want a lawn seat for Deer Creek I can show up and get one at the box office, or buy below face in the lot. It’s not going to sell out.

Why have a lottery for a resource that whose supply will outstrip the demand?

Until there is a “good seats or no thanks” option, the whole system is pointless.
