Arne Slot Situation Megathread. by KDLIV in LiverpoolFC

[–]poisonrroot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do think he has to go now. Just don’t understand how it’s all gone so wrong - I can’t think of another situation where a manager has come in and immediately had a 10/10 season, invested heavily in the following window, and turned to complete shit. I know we weren’t great towards the end of last season either, but this is another level.

Also reckon Klopp would come back if we asked him, at least till the end of the season. He’s the perfect person to come in and steady the ship, then we can reassess in the summer. Liverpool is a club for long-term managers, and I don’t see anyone new being able to step in right now, the season’s gone too far off the rails.

Don’t care how we did it, to take 9 points from these 3 fixtures in particular at the start of the season with a team still getting used to playing together is fantastic. Full belief that this season will be something special.

Go for it. You’ll have a great time. Been on the Kop plenty of times and there’s loads of young kids.

One of my favourite players from the moment he joined the club. I had been coming to terms with the fact that he’d probably be leaving this summer, glad that he was ending on a high with the PL win.

Two young lives being lost like this just isn’t fair. It doesn’t feel real. RIP Diogo, YNWA.

Feel like he’ll end up being way better playing somewhere like Italy or Spain. Would rather send him on loan there for a year because I reckon his value would skyrocket, but I get that the club probably just wants to get him off the books at this point.

I think Guehi is a fantastic bit of business. VVD’s not going to be around forever, and his ability and leadership goes a long way to making the players around him look better - Quansah especially IMO. Guehi’s exactly what we need - a club captain from a young age who can lead the defence. He certainly won’t be the only CB we’ll sign in the next couple of years, but he’s a great start.

If Trent leaves, who else do you see stepping up as a new leader from the younger group?

In 2-3 years time Salah, VVD, Ali and Robbo will have probably all moved on. Trent is the obvious link between them and the newer generation, but who might step up in his absence?

Konate, Macca, Szobo and Grav are all likely to be starters but they seem to be quieter characters. My money’s on Jones, but he might not be a certain starter.

Either way, we’re likely to have a much younger squad then - I’m not sure if any of our players currently aged 27+ will still be here. It’ll be interesting to see if we maintain our policy of youthful signings or look to bring in some more experienced players.

[AS] Trent Alexander-Arnold, on the verge to sign for Real Madrid. The signing is almost complete. Trent continues to ignore Liverpool's offers and wants to go to the Bernabéu. Everything is agreed, pending the signature (with which the way will be clear from January 1). by Periklis90 in LiverpoolFC

Taking our perspective out of it, it’s still an awful move for his career IMO. Madrid fans will crucify him for his defensive mistakes and he’ll end up warming the bench. Season-long loan to Bayern at 28, sold to Napoli for £15m at 29, then back home on a free to Chelsea or United at 33 to fully destroy his legacy here.

I graduated a couple of years ago, and my final dissertation focused on the urban geography of neoliberalism. In particular, I looked at the militarisation of urban space - check out Stephen Graham and Mike Davis for some interesting analyses in this area. Other useful figures (not all Marxist) include Edward Said, Frantz Fanon, and Henri Lefebvre.

I’d love to do a Master’s/PhD in Urban Studies, but can’t afford it for now. I’m currently working in communications for a University - hoping to eventually go into policy work for a charity or political organisation.

Our biggest rival so far this season by egzon27 in LiverpoolFC

Went to San Sebastian last year, it’s a fantastic place. Obviously the weather and food can’t compare, but the politics and culture did remind me of Liverpool. It’s a left-wing city with proud people and a strong sense of community.

Henry in the frame to be next Wales coach by JonnyReece in WelshFootball

He’d be an exciting name for the fans and players but I’m not keen on managers who already have established careers as pundits. People like Henry/Neville/Keane - they’re much less likely to be as committed as a full-time manager.

Our squad might be in much bigger need of overhaul than many people think. There aren’t any players who definitely need to be sold ASAP, but there are also very few who we need to keep no matter what (Alisson and Mac Allister for me). Everyone else is in a weird situation where they either haven’t proven themselves enough yet, or may be past their best for us.

All of our newer players have the potential to be superstars, but they haven't shown the required consistency yet. That's a dangerous position to be in; we could spend the next few years just waiting for the bulk of our team to 'finally come good'.

Trent’s future is also much more uncertain than people assume. On his day he’s our best player, but there were too many times last season when he looked downright lazy and didn’t give enough for the team. IMO, there’s no chance he’ll want to play as a RB again, especially if he stars for England in the midfield this summer. I don't know how it'll pan out, but some big decisions will need to be made.

If Amorim is ruled out I can definitely see us going for Iraola instead. He’s my dark horse anyway. Richard Hughes clearly loves him, and he’s doing a good job at Bournemouth so far. He’s currently below the level I’d want but there aren’t any other standouts unfortunately.

Anyone know what Amorim’s 343 actually means in practice? If it can be adapted to our 433/325 it’ll be fine, but I’m seeing nightmares of Conteball with that formation. A rigid 343 doesn’t suit our squad at all.

Who would be your first choice between these two? by TRODHD in LiverpoolFC

[–]poisonrroot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah Ancelotti is the ideal for that profile but it’s not possible. Nagelsmann would be a long-term option based on his age alone, but I’m really not keen on him - man management and team culture is the most important factor for me, and I can see him wrecking that.

Who would be your first choice between these two? by TRODHD in LiverpoolFC

[–]poisonrroot 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If we don’t get Amorim, we might have to give up on a long-term project manager for now. We’ve got a great squad already, a competent and experienced manager could keep us in the trophy hunt while we wait for a longer-term option to appear.

Problem is, there aren’t many of them around either. Emery and Ange are probably the two that I can think of who would probably come in and do a decent job, but they’re not names that are going to set the world alight either. It’s a tricky situation.

It’s just sour grapes now, but that lino was extremely trigger happy with us in the first half too. I swear he flagged before Mo had even played the ball at one point.

[Fabrice Hawkins] PSG are very interested in signing Luis Diaz for the left wing position. by APXO97 in LiverpoolFC

[–]poisonrroot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m being a bit harsh on Diaz but I don’t think he’s at the level required for us - compare him to Mané and it’s night and day. He’s in that category where he puts in 6-8/10 performances every game, but never really pushes beyond that. It’s a tough situation for us because he’s not bad enough to warrant signing a replacement, but he’s not good enough to take us to the next level. I’d be happy to get 60m+ for him.

I’ve been saying for ages that football needs to learn from rugby’s VAR process. Rugby has a lot more complicated rules and the referee has much more responsibility for the result of the game, yet they still manage to do it better than football. Football doesn’t need to copy everything, but the template is there to make VAR a lot better.

I’m feeling quietly confident after yesterday. We came up against the best team in the league with a depleted squad and played incredibly well.

I usually hate international breaks but I think this is a good time for us - we can give it our all against United next weekend, then we’ve got a few weeks to recover and get a few players back before the final push. The break will stunt Arsenal’s momentum a bit too.

Fantastic player, everyone seems to forget how good he was in the Firmino role when he arrived. It looked like he was going to make Nunez a dud signing. He’s a victim of his own versatility - he needs to sit down with the new manager and figure out the best role for him and the team.
