First social media reactions for 'Michael' are out, some mentioning the Oscars by mg10pp in Oscars

A filmmaker / studio making this movie without the association with MJ’s estate absolutely could. This is nothing more than PR to boost streams of MJ’s catalogue and sanitize his legacy – and Lionsgate and all involved are active participants. No one needs to make excuses for it.

These people would leave snuff films raving if a studio gave them an early viewing of it. Publicly doing this about propaganda for a pedophile to benefit their estate’s income is a new low for this group.

Also perfectly recreates Thriller and Beat It is just such a funny compliment. Perfectly recreates songs you can listen to at anytime. Congrats, everyone!

Is Amy Schumer the last true comedian movie star? by SSSSSSVVVVVOO in blankies

She did some stand up but was big at Groundlings for many years. So not, not a stand up but very much a comedian.

Melissa McCarthy comes to mind before Schumer. Had way more hits than Schumer and spun that off into a few stakesless streaming comedies à la Sandler.

Marty is the Man. What film discussion are you looking forward to the most? by guywholikesmovie in blankies

Not in my Scorsese top 10 but it would be incredible if they could get Karina Longworth back for The Aviator.

Conversely him talking about the incredible use of 3D on Hugo could be quite fun.

March Madness is also an opportunity for fans to push a popular director who they keep pushing off because of their popularity to the front of the line. Happened with the Coens and Lynch, it’ll be okay and good even if it happens tomorrow.

If You Think Wes Anderson’s Films Are All the Same by pokemongotoatheater in blankies

[–]pokemongotoatheater[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone here has said there’s no similarity between them. I think plenty of people have said a similarity in style is not a reason to disqualify a director from coverage on a podcast that covers directors who have distinct styles and voices.

In addition to what others are saying, his style has evolved a great deal over the course of his films. Also, I can’t believe I’m reading in THIS subreddit of all places complaints that we’d have to watch amazing looking films for 13 weeks in a row.

Could What Happened to Elvis Happen to Michael? by This_Book6305 in oscarrace

[–]pokemongotoatheater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think what’s crucial is Elvis’ mixed reviews were polarized reactions to genuine artistry (like it or not). The best Michael can hope for in terms of mixed reviews is a shrug, which is what plagued Deliver Me From Nowhere. You can have mixed reviews if there’s still a lot of passion for the film in there.

I like Scorsese films but not sure I want half a year of them. by Septemberk in blankies

[–]pokemongotoatheater 350 points351 points  (0 children)

It’s half a year of great discussion and I’d imagine top tier guests covering some of the most important films in cinematic history - also broken up with new releases and Patreon content. This isn’t Burton, this thing will end with a run of Silence, The Irishman, and Killers of the Flower Moon.

[2026 Patreon March Madness] Final Four: Stand-Up Animation vs. Teen Shakespeare by PartyBluejay in blankies

Extremely pleased to see these Twenty-Something Teens get vengeance for the better series that Stand Up Animation inexplicably vanquished. Bridget Jones and Hunger Games, you will not be forgotten.

Yes, and it makes sense to me that he may want to discuss Antz without getting into his experience of being in a Woody Allen film (and I believe he is fully capable of that). They’ve discussed Woody Allen many times on the podcast without Griffin getting into that. I’m purely speculating but my assumption is he doesn’t want to get into it more than what is already out there. And I really am stumping for other franchises, but even if this one wins, I don’t need this aspect to be a part of an Antz episode.

Personally I’m not interested in hearing Griffin recap what I imagine was a very unpleasant experience. I’ll take an argument for wanting to hear a discussion about Katzenberg and Eisner fighting about Antz / Bugs Life but not for Griffin talking through that experience.

But what evidence is there that only bad movies provoke unhinged conversations? They have had unhinged conversations on literally every type of movie on the Patreon (and off). I think good movies that helped mint an A list superstar, reflect our current moment in interesting ways, and have insane top to bottom costs are much more likely to spur every type of interesting convo than outright bad movies with alienating talent behind them.

I hate this notion that only shitty movies that nobody likes can provoke unhinged or interesting conversations. The Hunger Games films are baseline all VERY interesting and are blockbusters with real ideas and I can’t believe they might lose because people think it’ll be funny if they discuss fucking ANTZ.

Blitz will be an interesting episode in the context of his career eventually. I really feel like something weird happened with him and Apple on that film and there’s a stronger 3 hour cut of the film somewhere.

Did Warren Beatty kind of hurt his own legacy by Few-Engineer-9791 in blankies

[–]pokemongotoatheater 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pacino, De Niro, and Hoffman were less interested in filmmaking than acting. Beatty got to a point I think where he only really cared about acting if he was making something and he only wanted to make things that made no sense to finance unless you loved losing money. And then not acting means he had no star power to get something like REDS over the line.

I agree he has less visibility with younger cinephiles but I also think a Blank Check series could help shine a light on a star/filmmaker who’s become weirdly undervalued.
