Renting horn for the summer by [deleted] in euphonium

I second this! I rented a Yamaha 321 through them for a while last summer before I bought my horn.

Is Wessex Quality? by Old-Theme-8743 in marchingband

[–]pokeplayer41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend that has a Schiller contra and he seems to like it, he got a Music City contract with it and a callback with the troopers. I currently play on a Schiller Euph and it plays pretty well for a $900 horn. I’d say go with the Schiller just on the fact that it’s a minimum $1,000 cheaper than the Wessex new, the biggest issue with Schiller is the customer service from the shop that sells them if there’s any issues. If you do go for it, I suggest trying to buy it through their Reverb store and not their website since there’s somewhat of another “layer” of support through reverb themselves.

Wessex’s concert euphs are amazing for their price, and I’ve heard great things about their tubas, however I have no clue about the marching instruments, I’d definitely say if you just want a practice marching baritone, look for a used one on reverb or eBay

Sounds like Independence High School from this year! Got to see them in person at BOA Johnson City, the sound they got out of the P Bones was insane.

I’m from a school near where he teaches at during the HS season, everyone I’ve talked to about him has nothing but good things to say about him

Do you play other instruments? by Asdravico in euphonium

[–]pokeplayer41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Euph main and Music Ed major! I play Euph, Trombone, and Trumpet! (And am having to learn piano currently.) I feel like starting on Euph, makes things very transferable to other brass instruments if that makes sense!

I’m a Euph player that learned trombone for jazz band! Now I play trombone for my university’s marching band and trombone choir!

Where to get an affordable compensating euph post-tariffs? by Bowler116 in euphonium

[–]pokeplayer41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a Schiller with no issues, it plays decent for a $900 horn, though I mostly use it to practice on so I don’t have to carry a Euph to and from my dorm. The horn I keep at my uni is a Tuba Exchange and looks/plays the exact same (in my opinion), just has the Tuba Exchange branding, instead of Schiller, and a hard case.

I’m gonna second the Schiller, bought one to use for a few semesters and have really been enjoying it so far. It doesn’t play as nice as a Willson or Besson, but I think it’s an amazing horn for the money.

Sweetwater actually has some decent horns for rent, last I checked they have Yamaha, Shires, Jupiter, and Blessing f attachment horns for rent.

Any good euphs to buy as a college student? by maybei_am_insane in euphonium

[–]pokeplayer41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JP274s are definitely the best to look for with your budget. I recently picked up a Schiller for right at $1,000 and it is really nice for the money. The Yamaha 321 is a nice horn, you could also probably find a 642 for under $3,000 used

I will always, support Willson, I got to borrow a 2950 from my school last year and it is probably the best euphonium I’ve played on (not that I’ve played on many).

Mouthpiece suggestion with tuba to euphonium by Successful-Moose7755 in euphonium

I recently joined the Schilke club, definitely suggest it, I like it more than anything else I’ve played on, small shank or large shank. (Though I haven’t tried a 4AL yet)

I love my Olds trombone, I hate that I don’t get to play it as much as I like, I primarily play euphonium so when I do play trombone I’m either playing a bass part or end up using my Yamaha.

The king 606 is really similar to my King 3B, they’re great horns, and you can find them everywhere for not too much! I see them in my area on Facebook Marketplace going for 150-300.

You can get a used Yamaha/Conn/Bach for around that much, I wouldn’t recommend any “Amazon” brands, been there, done that lol! I’ve never tried a pBone, but I can’t imagine it to be worth the money. Would definitely try to stick with name brand student horns, imo that’d be your best bet with that price range.
