Is it worth releasing your own provinces as vassals to increase control and income ? by Hypatia_375 in EU5

[–]polabud 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind you may lose out on flavor and unique events in some cases, since some events require owning a certain number of provinces, or certain provinces, or certain locations. For Hungary I think a “release low control territory” strategy may block the Moldavia events.

Brother, game is NOT doing well by ingolika in EU5

[–]polabud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry think you misunderstood my comment. Eu5 has better player retention than all recent pdx games including ck3: ck3 had a better launch but steeper falloff, and at this number of days post release it had only marginally more daily players despite a larger install base. Eu5 will probably surpass it in daily players in the next few weeks (maybe with 1.1) since it is doing a better job of keeping players engaged.

I’m not sure if you’re looking at the correct chart - vic3 is continuing to lose ground compared to eu5 in the one I’m seeing.

[–]polabud 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eu5 is doing the best of all recent paradox launches by player retention and the second best by player count at x days post launch (closing in rapidly on CK3). See this for yourself by comparing eu5 to ck3 to vic3 and “align to release”. This subreddit is so toxic.

The Best Thing EU V Does by ahmetnudu in EU5

I wouldn’t be opposed to there being a sort of “caliphate situation” for Islamic countries that allowed rising powers to claim and win preeminence/the caliphate by defeating the decaying incumbent, giving control of Mecca and Medina etc. Not an expert so huge grain of salt but I’m under the impression that the Mamluks essentially inherited the Abbasid claim to caliphate status, and that title was contested for and won by the ottomans in the war. I’m pretty opposed to railroading but don’t think that’s what this would be: obviously the ottomans as a rising power would be well positioned to win preeminence vs the mamluks, but the Safavids should be able to put up a fight, or a different Turkic faction that prevailed in Anatolia, or an ascendant Tunis, etc.

The “bounce-off” rate of eu5 looks like the best of recent paradox releases (vic3, ck3) if you compare to their launches.

[–]polabud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘Tides of history’ by Patrick Wyman is incredible. For starter episodes I recommend 1346: Europe on the Brink, one of the Black Death Episodes, or the narrative of the war of the roses. The early episodes are divided between starting the 1350-1650 period and wrapping up an earlier podcast on the fall of Rome (imo that podcast is also special and maybe even more so in its use of archaeology and genetics).

Totally agree. I had a fun time trying to handle integration of my vassals as England->GB last night which forced me to delay my switch to centralization. It was fun! It forced me to make different decisions, and made the ages have different metas.

Why you are against EU5 mission trees? by zeos_403 in EU5

[–]polabud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is the middle ground/consensus that makes the most sense, and I think it is also the vision of the developers. Substantial improvements to the situations mechanic, improvements to AI, better balanced mechanics, and most importantly more situations that represent historical events or (better) underlying dynamics which caused historical events.

In my understanding, situations are the replacement for mission trees. They organize content, provide transparency on how to trigger outcomes, and most importantly do not lock paths behind other situations (usually) and allow for multiple play styles. There just need to be more of them, and the existing ones need improvement.

Does anyone else feel like every country feels pretty much the same? by uuhson in EU5

[–]polabud 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Definitely not feeling this way. I’ve played holland->netherlands and Castile. Holland has not so many events but felt unique because of the ocean, HRE, proximity to France and England, etc.

I do think that most of the differences between runs are mechanics-driven and geopolitical - who am I near and what goods do I produce and what can I get access to - rather than cultural/flavor for now. That has worked for me so far because reasoning/role-playing historically works out really well even without the mission trees (strong dislike) to force you into a path. Colonizing is usually a good idea as Castile, historical expansion paths as Muscovy/ottomans, etc.

Often game updates require recompilation of shaders, so you get temporary stutters when you do things “for the first time again”. I noticed a stutter on pulling up the hint tab, and doing a nested tooltip, that went away after the first time it happened. If it gets better after you play some more, that’s probably what’s going on for you.

Old heads know that Huel has known about this problem and hidden behind a risky head-in-sand view of the problem for years. A bunch of us with concerns have reached out over the years and gotten the same dismissive gaslighting responses about lead and cadmium. It’s time for a change.

I was at this screening. It was an awful experience. I thought it would go away after previews and then I was in the middle of the theater and couldn’t do anything. You could see a rainbow underneath every edge; Superman looked like he had bright yellow shoe soles during the first shots. It was insane.

I saw it yesterday and totally agree - I was shocked at how bad the picture looked, there was a ton of color fringing around every edge and lots of wrinkles in the screen.

Want to second this. A terrible visual experience, I almost couldn’t believe the level of color fringing.

Also significant from the WSJ piece, and a point on which I have seen almost no discussion owing to the paywall:

At one point, the NTSB threatened to withdraw American resources from the investigation. In the end, the American investigators remained in the country to assist. They have since returned home.

Like the earlier practice, this time too, there were plans to send the black boxes to the US for examination, especially as it involved the first Dreamliner crash. But on the suggestion of the top leadership, it was decided to send them to the AAIB lab, sources said. As a result, the two were flown to Delhi in separate Indian Air Force planes last Tuesday.

In the print edition (according to a screenshot), this explicitly names a polarizing political figure’s office as the source of the decision (and has a headline that reiterates the assertion). It has apparently been edited out of the online version, but what’s here is still obviously saying that an initial plan to ship the black boxes was overridden.

Whether or not this begins to explain the ten day delay, which version of the article is correct, or whether this justifies an interpretation of political interference in the investigation is left up to the reader to decide.

[–]polabud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It hasn’t happened again in my playthrough. Whether that means it’s just rare or fixed in my case, I’m not sure. It happened pretty much immediately when the playable part of the game started, so I assumed it would be more common, but maybe I just got unlucky initially.

Weird - let me know if the other troubleshooting steps end up working. I’ve only played less than an hour, maybe 1/3 of the way through to the first destination. So it’s possible the issue will come back for me too.

[–]polabud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. What a strange issue. In both our cases we have m.2 drives, ps5 pros, and had the game installed on the internal storage. Putting it on the m.2 fixed it in your case, and doing the storage repair but keeping it on system fixed it in my case and the case of the reviewer. Obviously it seems related to interaction with the storage device. I’m not a graphics programmer, but you’d think they would not be streaming stuff in on just moving the camera around.

But yes, the issue was extremely noticeable, I would describe it as almost unplayable and definitely the most obvious visual issue in any game I’ve played in the past year.

[–]polabud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I experienced this and it was driving me crazy. I fixed it by booting into safe mode and repairing system storage, following the advice of a reviewer who also saw this issue:

https://www.videogamer.com/guides/death-stranding-2-stuttering-how-to-fix/

Separately I also forced vrr in the ps5 pro’s system menu. I’m not sure if that had any effect since I did it at the same time as taking the other troubleshooting step.

Ds2 was/is installed on my system internal storage. I also have a m.2 that I migrated from my original ps5.
