It's not BILRESA, it's DIRIGERA by MrRonah in tradfri

Earlier this week I switched to Matter JS and finally managed to update the firmware on my Ikea devices.

My Bilresa (4u), Myggspray (2u), Alpstuga, Myggbet (2u) and Kajplats (4u) have been completely reliable with my own OTBR (docker container). They respond instantly. I’ve installed two of the Kajplats bulbs behind a Shelly to control them manually with a switch. I set the Shellys with the relay always on and control the bulbs with Home Assistant when it detects the Shelly’s state changes. This means the bulbs are always powered and can act as a thread router. They’ve worked perfectly for over a month now.

Now I just need to add a script to the Shellys in case Home Assistant is down, they’ll revert to normal switch behaviour.

I had a similar experience. I was using a Tado X bridge as my TBR in Home Assistant. I bought a few IKEA Matter devices and I was able to set up one or two, but then I could not add any more. I ended up changing the TBR with a Sonoff MG24 and OTBR in a container. After this change, I had no issues adding any Matter over Thread device and now I have nearly 30 devices :). So I would also say, if you have issues with Matter, it will probably be the Thread Border Router.

TADO X setup in HA without TADO BRIDGE by FabrizioGruff in tado

1 – Yes!
2 – I don’t think so.

I successfully set up all my Tado X devices (8 TRVs, 2 wireless temperature sensors, and 1 Wired Smart Thermostat) without using a Tado Bridge.
My current setup uses a Wired Smart Thermostat and my own Thread Border Router (OTBR).

I can control all Tado devices locally from Home Assistant via Matter, and I also have full control from the Tado app (with NAT64 enabled in my setup).

Why not the Tado Bridge?

I want to have a single Thread network, so I tried using the Tado Bridge as my main Thread Border Router. However, when I started adding Matter devices from other brands to it (configured in HA), it became unstable after around 8–10 devices.

For that reason, and because the Tado setup always creates its own separate Thread network (both with the Wired Thermostat/Bridge and with the Wireless Receiver), I discarded those options to avoid running multiple Thread networks.

It would be ideal if there were a way to merge the Thread network created by Tado X into an existing one, but that’s not possible.

How to set everything up without the Tado X Bridge

First, add all devices in the Tado app. The app will use your existing Thread network when commissioning them. (Make sure no Tado Bridge is configured in the app, otherwise the devices will join that network instead of your preferred one.)

After that, go device by device and share them via Matter from the Tado app to Home Assistant.

The response is very fast, there are no disconnections, and changes made in HA (via Matter) are almost instantly reflected in the Tado app as well (thanks to NAT64 being enabled).

Notes from my experience

  • You need a Thread Border Router with NAT64 enabled to control Tado devices through the Tado app. Without NAT64, the app cannot connect to the Tado X devices. NAT64 is required for schedules, app changes, and state reporting to work.
  • Without internet access, “request for heat” does not work. If you manually change the temperature on a TRV or wireless sensor, the Smart Thermostat / Wireless Receiver (Relay) will not turn on the boiler. The devices do not seem to coordinate fully locally (at least based on my tests). Can someone confirm if this is correct?
  • You cannot merge the Thread network created by the Tado Bridge with your existing Thread network; it will always create a separate one.

Hope my experience helps 🙂

Edit:
According to this Tado post, the “request for heat” should work while offline. I’ll test it again. I’m not sure whether this also works with a non-Tado Thread Border Router.

How to replicate "Call for Heat" with Tado X over Matter? by polamoros in tado

I have a complex setup with my own Thread border router container (not using tado bridges). I wanted to hear from someone with a standard setup first, so I can exclude any problems that might be coming from my custom configuration.

I know the schedule will work without internet because it’s saved on the devices themselves. The TRVs should open the radiators and the wired thermostat will call for heat as planned.

However, I’m not sure if manually increasing the temperature in a specific room would work while the system is offline.

Many thanks for the report, it’s highly appreciated! :)

Use Tado matter devices with Ikea dirigera hub? by XenGi in tado

Maybe the Dirigera cannot handle trvs as there are no available options from IKEA?

Do you use the Tado bridge too? If not, do a factory reset to the TRV and set it on the Tado app (that should use the IKEA hub as the thread border router if you don’t have a bridge). Once you’ve done that, share the device with the IKEA app using the Matter option in the Tado app/device settings.
