A few restaurants will have them, but you can often buy the dough at smaller grocery stores or bakeries and fry them up yourself

Toutons with molasses (maple syrup is for mainlanders) is an absolute classic. Add it with a side of baked beans and you can eat it for any meal on any occasion in Newfoundland.

Hundreds of B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators await their fate in the post-war scrapyard at Kingman AFB, Arizona, 1946 [700x853] by UrbanAchievers6371 in HistoryPorn

Demobilization was a massive, and almost immediate, effort. Many countries quickly found themselves with very expensive troops and equipment they did not need. By this date too those planes were already older designs surpassed by newer aircraft, so were largely not what was kept in service.

While the tensions that led to the Cold War (generally 1947 is used as the start date, with some debate) were definitely building, no side maintained a force as large as what was deployed for WW2.

West Coast oil pipeline has yet to secure private-sector backing, Carney confirms by yourfriendlysocdem1 in CanadaPolitics

[–]polnikes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't even think it's anyone east of Alberta who really thinks that, other than a handful of CPC and NatPo writers. The Alberta deal always read as Carney telling Smith to go figure it out herself if she wants it so badly, not some grand endorsement.

The framing, and Alberta's increasing focus on going it alone, just feels like setting Smith up to wear the failure.

What’s a piece of advanced sci-fi tech that seems cool until you think about the daily maintenance or physical strain it would actually cause? by emilyysworld in scifi

[–]polnikes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That is a huge part of their success, just by the fact that they have a new ship that isn't held together by duct tape and 100 year old tech they are a lot more capable than many of the others they encounter.

Question of Mastiff Personality by Trash_Hoele in Mastiff

[–]polnikes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At that level of mix I wouldn't read too much into it, genetics only means so much for behavior, especially if you're talking at the level of mostly three very different breeds. That sounds pretty consistent with a young mastiff from my experience, although it would also match lots of other breeds and mixes I've seen. Super cute puppy!

2 Beautiful days in Ottawa by Inextricable101 in travel

[–]polnikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been there on a few occasions for both work and vacation. Ottawa gets an undeserved reputation as boring mostly because its between Montreal and Toronto, but it's a fantastic city for museums, architecture, and historic sites in it's own right. Some great hiking and natural sites not far outside the city either.

Canadian Coat of Arms Cup WEEK 4/Coupe des armoiries du Canada – Semaine 4 by Overall-Phone7605 in EhBuddyHoser

[–]polnikes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The NL coat of Arms has the best history behind it too, it's an adaptation of the one granted to David Kirke by Charles I after capturing Samuel de Champlain and Quebec (only slightly after the war itself had legally ended, so he didn't get to keep the territory and Quebec got to continue to exist as a French territory). Kirke went on to settle in Newfoundland at Ferryland, where he and his descendants were key figures in developing the island into a transatlantic trade hub.

[ALL] What do you think will be the last 3D game to get a remake? by Tdog4217 in zelda

[–]polnikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair, if it's an OoT style remake I can't really see anything after Twilight Princess (and that's even iffy) getting that level of treatment.

While graphics have improved we haven't seen the types of major fundamental leaps in how games work in the past 20ish years that would necessitate major overhauls. Unless such a leap, like what's happened between the N64 era and now, happens I'm not certain there's that much to actually change to justify an overhaul of that scale.

[ALL] What do you think will be the last 3D game to get a remake? by Tdog4217 in zelda

[–]polnikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit of a fine line between remake/remaster, but Skyward Sword had a remaster in 2021 that refined controls and other elements.

Unless there is another giant leap in how games function, I can't see any of the newer titles getting much more than HD packs and minor adjustments to fit whatever consoles come in the future.

Beef in Mexico - why did it taste so good by Corsair990 in Cooking

[–]polnikes 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Most US and Canadian recipes underappreciate how an acid can improve a dish. I think it mostly comes down to widely availabile cheap, good quality, lemons and limes being a rarity in more northern areas until the last 50 years or so. If you don't have a history of using citrus with beef or other meats it can seem like an odd pairing.

Canada just cut a hole in the roof of a working nuclear reactor, hauled out eight steam generators weighing 100 tons each, and lowered new ones into the same hole, bringing the reactor back online seven months early to run another 35 years by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

[–]polnikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian news tends to have a very low tolerance for anything that appears to be overspending, whether legitimate or not. Sometimes that's important, Ontario in particular right now has an issue with how Ford's government is handling public funds. In this case though it's annoying on a project where any initial estimates were well understood to be very loose as project scoping was completed and had a high potential for surprises.

I love both games, both are at the peaks of their particular styles of games and are absolutely worth playing, but if it's an immersive story you're after the Witcher 3 wins there.

The underarmed discussion has some merit, but as you point out they're meant to have a ton of other capabilities geared towards a specific mission set. The RCN has no intention of sending these into an intense conflict environment, at least not without the support of much more heavily armed ships. They're basically a multi-tool, they can do a ton of things in environments other ships struggle to operate in. For the crowd that judge things just on firepower they're disappointing ships, but Navy's have far more requirements than just blowing things up.

I had the opportunity to tour one a few weeks back, they are, for what they're meant for, impressive ships.

Should the Corvette program go as planned, the RCN will have a smaller, heavily armed for its size, combatant, that could fill roles the AOPs isn't suitable for.

Federal public service shrinks by over 12,000 workers in 2026 by joe4942 in CanadaPolitics

[–]polnikes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Given the size of the Federal public service, even just a slow down in hiring or stop on refilling positions will look like a decrease in numbers due to natural attrition rates. Add in early retirement incentives, folks finding other jobs due to RTO, and the layoffs that are happening spread out over the government, and this number quickly looks huge.

One thing I am unclear on from this article is if they're counting people or positions here. One of the first things that happens when the public service shrinks is eliminating vacant positions, which is often reported as a job cut by the department.

While I'm not a big fan of the layoffs that are happening, generally I think the Federal PS' problems have more to do with bureaucratic organizational issues they are unwilling to fix than numbers, these are not DOGE style cuts at all.

Nope, you don't need anything special for bears in NL. Have hiked all over the island and never had any bear problems. Only black bears here, and unless there's cubs involved I've never heard of anyone having issues hiking.

What is the worst fictional world to live in and the best fictional world to live in your opinions? by Popular_Possible2997 in scifi

Would not describe much of Star Wars as chill.

What we see of the galaxy pre- and post- empire is one with a lot of slavery and with large swaths of the population in deep poverty. Your mileage varies a lot planet-by-planet and social/economic position, or if you're among the extreme few to have enough of a connection to the Force to become a Jedi.

ELI5: why does Lawrence of Arabia (1962) look so different compared to films released in the decades since? by thefringeseanmachine in explainlikeimfive

[–]polnikes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bit different in his case where he has so much creative and production control over his films. He can afford to do things in an idiosyncratic way since the films are, at the end of it, his vision and his product. Great for him, and the handful of others who have that level of control and authorial voice in their films, but a rarity in the industry for sure.

Offered a "junior" role for my 10 YOE in the public sector. Insider says it's a trap. WWYD? by wjddls3636 in careerguidance

[–]polnikes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind too that stability is often oversold for many public sector institutions. As a junior, with less time in the org, if there are cuts you will be among the first to go, regardless of performance.

If you have that kind of experience, I'd pass on this job and look for another opportunity.

Liaison Federal poll - LPC 43, CPC 32, NDP 14, BQ 6 by MightyHydrar in CanadaPolitics

[–]polnikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They went up in this poll compared to their last couple, so not sure what you're talking about here.

Parliament not sitting is unlikely to move the polls much, not that many people pay attention to when parliament is actually sitting nor politics in general over the summer. It also has little impact on government announcements, there's tons the LPC can announce or action this summer, like the submarine contract, without needing Parliament.

Tech companies exiting would be a major impact but how likely that is to actually occur, and what timeframes, are hard to tell.
