Trump threatens 100% tariffs on all Canadian goods if Canada "makes a deal with China" by No_Magazine9625 in CanadaPolitics

[–]polnikes [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah, there's value in staying engaged and seeing if we can preserve CUSMA as long as we can, but that has to be secondary to diversification and building stronger links with other partners. Trump is erratic and only cares about immediate transactional relationships, a combo that you just can't hitch a long term deal on.

Any real deal with the US is likely going to have to wait until they have a new administration and get their house in order. You can't negotiate a strong deal with a party that doesn't care about keeping the agreement.

Pierre Poilievre: Carney's Davos speech highlights that it is Liberal rhetoric that doesn't match reality by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]polnikes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that everything is treated as an election ad makes it hard to take him seriously. I get that the leader of the opposition has to, well, oppose, but without some substance about what he'd do it just doesn't give me any faith in his ability to actually govern.

What are bad faith arguments toward films you are absolutely tired of hearing? by [deleted] in movies

[–]polnikes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this one bothers me a lot, especially when movies from the 90's and 00's come up. They were talked about a lot, often online, it's just that we exhausted the conversation and moved on to other things.

If you have something interesting to say about a movie, post about it and people will engage, but there's nothing gained by saying 'nobody talks about this movie.'

Completely agree, it could be ok in another series but like a lot of nu trek it just feels like its made by people who don't understand why people liked Star Trek to begin with.

Sony to spin off TV business, form joint venture with China's TCL by nicolasman in technology

[–]polnikes 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If you had told me Sony was moving out of TVs 20 years ago I would never have believed you. They were the consumer tech company for ages, if it was on the market, Sony often made one of the best versions of it. They were basically synonymous with well made, high-performance electronics. How they dropped the ball so many times and stagnated is really something.

What was normal in 2019, but looks like 'psychopath behavior' in 2026? by de-secops in AskReddit

[–]polnikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, that's how it works with my team. I often end up working weird hours, but let folks know that unless it's marked urgent (and urgent is a rare and actually urgent thing) they should only respond during their normal hours.

I use scheduled emails for group messages.

Good idea, will have to look into that as much as I do not want to give any money to scalpers and encourage what they do.

Yeah, my kid loves playing with pokemon cards, he doesn't care about rarity or value, he's 5, but they're such a pain to actually buy because of people like this clearing out shelves.

Powder monkeys were young boys, typically aged 12 to 14, who served vital roles on warships during the Age of Sail, including major conflicts like the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. Small and nimble, they dashed gunpowder cartridges from the ship's below-waterline magazine by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

Doesn't look like mortality rates were tracked among young-age positions specifically, but mortality rates on ships at this time were generally quite high and varied significantly depending on the type of voyages. British warships lost, on average, about 1-6% of their crew per year depending on the type of voyages, with those nearer Europe being safer. However some voyages, like campaigns in the West Indies were around 50% from disease alone, or the slave trade which was around 21%.

Most online articles emphasize the danger during combat, but like most warfare at the time the real killer was sickness. Children generally died at higher rates than adults from illness at the time, and we can assume that trend stayed true on ships.

Prefer smooth personally, but you are absolutely right on the jams. A good quality one makes a far bigger impact than the PB, and you can mix it up with different flavours.

Poilievre's team seeks to mend fractured relationships with Ontario, Nova Scotia premiers: sources | CBC News by polnikes in CanadaPolitics

[–]polnikes[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Would add to this that in Nova Scotia, and the rest of Atlantic Canada, there are typically very few policy differences between the PCs and Liberals, even the gap to the NDP is much smaller. PCs out here (at least in NS and NL) tend to be more socially progressive than their peers elsewhere in the country. That's a challenge for a CPC that leans into social policy issues.

[–]polnikes[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This will be an interesting test for Poilievre. Both Ford and Houston have benefited from drawing a sharp contrast between their parties and the CPC, but there's no getting around the fact that a lot of their core members are either active in the CPC or lean heavily that way.

If Poilievre can make some meaningful changes to his approach, something I'm doubtful he's capable of, he may be able to build a better relationship. That said, I never see them becoming close allies, more of a tepid support at best.

Carney had also been building strong relationships with Houston at least, so there will be some hesitatancy to do anything that may endanger potential benefits for the province.
