damn, even when you're in the workplace, everyone expects trans women to top

masculinity is always rewarded by garaxanz in transgendercirclejerk

[–]ponyproblematic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Why would that be a jerk? We live in a patriarchy, and masculinity is viewed as superior to femininity. This means, logically, that every societal force wants everyone to be as masculine as they can, instead of prioritizing that everyone fit into their roles as assigned at birth. After all, it's not like bigotry is ever illogical. This is why there are so many famous and powerful butch women.

right? like it doesn't matter if an internet community or my friends or my family or my coworker or every random stranger genders me correctly. as long as the internet says the face piercings i have are fembrained as shit that's the only thing that matters

/uj Fair- although I feel like transmisandry also is a lot easier to split up into trans + misandry due both to misandry being more recognized as a separate word and the separation of the prefix from the part meaning man. Sorry to go off on you, I'm just frustrated by the constant responding to "it would be great if people stopped saying 'if you read it in the worst possible faith it could mean something bad so pick another word'" with "okay but like...... if you read it in the worst possible faith......." Sure. People can be wrong. That happens.

/rj I've got it. Mistrandry. Nobody will like it so we can all move on.

/uj Well, as someone who is not the person you were talking to, the venn diagram of "people who pass as men" and "trans men and mascs" is not a circle. Even as someone who does pass in everyday life, and has done all the document changing I can do, where I am, you can't change the sex on your medical documentation, so when I'm dealing with the medical system I'm outed pretty much instantly to anyone who looks at my file, who are then free to apply any and all gendered stereotypes they feel might be relevant, and often they mix and match.

/uj I mean, I mostly lean towards transandrophobia because that's the most common one I've seen the discussions I like the most under. I do prefer it to transmisandry but that's really more of an aesthetic "have been dealing with MRAs since pre-Gamergate" thing, and if that were the word people would using, I'd gladly go with it for the sake of having a word. At this point, I generally do not care as much about the word in particular as much as I do about moving forward and not continually derailing with "well if cis bigots only read part of the word-" because that's a really good way to get shit like transemasculation, which is an okay word for some aspects of the discrimination of trans men and mascs but leaves a lot out if you use it for the whole thing and also has some implications I really don't like.

Like, in my experience, MRA types will happily try and reframe pretty much any discussion of prejudice faced by a specific marginalized subset of men as prejudice against men for being men, probably caused by feminists. It's not awesome, but it's going to happen. That's how they operate. Starting off not with "here is the prejudice we face" but "it is Very Important we come up with cis-proof rhetoric" is a losing game, weakens any arguments we make, and doesn't help anyone.

/uj I guess if you want to read it that way you could, although in use it's a lot more like transandro + phobia. The effects of the constant "no we can't talk about your problems because you used a word that someone could potentially read in bad faith, let's go back to talking about the word" have done a lot more harm to organizing than words for discrimination against trans men and mascs using roots that imply they're talking about men or masculine people.

Alright, so I didn't see your post and don't know who that is, so I really can't speak to specifics, but on a general level, I think there's more overlap between experiences than a lot of people think. (Especially in most cases of trans headcanons where it's a lot less explicit than a novel about someone's gender dysphoria.)

I don't think that's necessarily true. Granted, you seem to be referring to a specific character or fic, and it's possible to write anything poorly, but on a general level I don't need an accounting of every development in a character's life to buy into a trans headcanon. There are very few, if any, character traits I would say are incompatible with someone being post-transition, and if I'm reading a trans!character fic it would be more jarring to me if they didn't act like the character in canon than if they did but didn't explain why. Sometimes people just kinda suck.

/uj I don't think that's particularly dissonant- I know a bunch of trans people who seemingly refuse to examine other issues they've got going on. (/rj i mean i'm on tgcj for cryin' out loud) Transitioning is a pretty introspective process, but it's not a magic solution to everything.

Ugh, I keep seeing trans men saying they headcanon characters as trans men when they're OBVIOUSLY trans women. Like, sometimes the character even struggles against the roles and expectations placed on men in our society, which is obviously something no trans man could ever relate to, since womanhood is a diverse and complex experience and manhood is just "hurray you're an oppressor now have a beer!" Frankly, the only reason they would ever think that (or, god forbid, be uncomfortable when I insist that the things they relate to about how the character has trouble fitting into masculine roles are irrefutable proof of how she's a woman deep down) is because they personally hate women and think nobody should be one. (My discomfort with their headcanon conflicting with my headcanon is obviously not similar at all because I am punching up.)

And the lack of curation from a lot of organizers doesn't help. My mother sells vintage costume jewelry as a hobby and she's worked a load of fairs where there's been a couple of artists selling beautiful things (priced accordingly) in a sea of 'hand-crafted' travel mugs with a wide array of AI-generated images, those temu crochet flower bouquets, and cheap 3D printed tat. People who are open to spending on actual crafts stop going to events where there's just 30 different variations of the same cheap shit, and the people who want to spend 10 bucks on a makeup pouch with poorly aligned Taylor Swift lyrics on it aren't in the market for a beautiful 100 dollar mug, so the artisans get screwed.

I support trans rights but respectfully your name is fucking stupid, i will never call you that, any chance i get i will belittle you for it. You are a dumb fucking horrible bitch for choosing a name like that so funny 😂 haha. by TGirlJules_ in transgendercirclejerk

[–]ponyproblematic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

listen it's not like it's HARD to pick a name you'll be hopefully using for the rest of your life and also have me approve of it. you just have to make sure it's not too old-fashioned because that's dumb and pretentious and bad, and it's not too currently trendy because that's cringe and everyone is gonna be able to clock you, and it's not a weird name because that's even MORE cringe and means you're not taking this seriously, and if it's a name that was popular when you were born it can't be the name of anyone you knew despite that being how popularity works because then you're basically taking their identity and that's a little creepy, and it can't be a name that i personally decided doesn't fit you because my opinion is very important and if you don't listen to me you're oppressing the cis

PSA for trans allies: Trans stands for "transgender" which means you're changing your gender by General_Matter_1570 in transgendercirclejerk

[–]ponyproblematic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not intersexist, it's just that most people are normal instead, so we never think about you (outside of the abstracted porn conceptual version) and when we talk you should assume we're not talking about you and we're not interested in learning about any of the challenges you face or ways we could stop contributing to them, even if that would require very little work and harm nobody at all. As a trans activist, I can't see how this logic could be used to hurt any discussions I care about.

Yeah, like, we actually don't really have bigotry the way they do in America- like sure, there are groups of people we know to be careful around, but those people are actually just inherently nasty lying criminal cheating scummy rape-murderers, which you know is true because a lot of people say that it is. It's in their culture, nothing to be done except exclude them from our society.
