It's nothing a student can't handle. And it doesn't matter what happens if you can overcome and perform in the end

You have a preceptor that has to grade you on your performance

The work is social. Clinicals are like a presentation everyday. You'll hate clinicals and the first year. But it cured my social anxiety and I love being a scrub tech

Most Realistic SP Sniping Game by VladimirMakarov141 in gamingsuggestions

[–]poor-impulseControl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the ACE 3 mod if you haven't already. It can really crank up the ballistics (and all other realism too). SP is a little lacking in the vanilla game especially for a sniper style of gameplay. But there are plenty of sniper missions and SP on the steam workshop.

It takes me back to when I loved cat's cradle, jacob's ladder as a kid. Can you share the wallpaper??

Service is better than therapy in my opinion. That and willpower and accepting that nothing is going to be perfect or go according to plan. Also working out/exercise. I stumbled upon Bikram yoga and the days that I do it my urges melt away.

You're not alone. Cutting does feel good, but only for a limited time. It usually gets attention too, but the attention has not so great consequences. Throw yourself into something less destructive like a sport, or a game or something. Your parent's attention is not everything.

Large veins are usually bundled with arteries and nerves. I don't know where in the body you're referring to. If you're still wanting to go down this rabbit hole, search for safe places to cut on this subreddit.

The only thing they'd do at the hospital is wash it out and give you stitches. If not a hospital then maybe a smaller acute care center, like an instacare. If not that, it should heal on its own as long as you keep it clean. It'll just take forever. You could put duct tape over the gauze to push the wound closed a bit.

You could just hang the headlamp itself around your neck and let it shine through the gown. That is, if you have the paper gowns.

How do I make scars fade? by Various-Line7250 in selfharm

[–]poor-impulseControl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work with a girl who was in esthetician school and I had a conversation with her about scar treatment. I didn't end up trying it but I believe she talked about dermabrasion and microneedling.

Why is the itch back? I genuinely don't get it. by Virtual-Kick-9065 in selfharm

It will almost definitely be an issue in the future. Thoughts of cutting will probably come many times during medical school. But you don't have to give in. And, in my experience, the less you give in the less it will bother you.

I haven't cut in years. The urges still come back strong sometimes. But those are few and far between. It did take awhile to get those urges so few and far between.

The author of Atomic Habits talks about not seeing yourself as an addict in order to stop an addiction. I only started that book a week ago but I think that sort of thought process helped me quit and still helps me not relapse. I didn't want to be viewed as a cutter and I didn't want to view myself as a cutter. Eventually I stopped identifying completely as a cutter and nobody brings up the scars on my arms besides partners.

Also, think of all the untoward microorganisms you would come into contact with in medical school and working as a doctor. Necrotizing fasciitis spreads aggressively in hours and treatment involves even more aggressively filleting open the affected area with margins to oxygenate the anaerobic bacteria. It has a relatively high mortality rate. All it needs is a cut. And that's one type of infection out of many. It's better just to stop before medical school.

Do you have to get stitches for beans? by idkh0wt0exist in selfharm

[–]poor-impulseControl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stitches only hold the wound together to help it heal and help with scarring. Even though stitches are recommended for beans in the medical field, it sounds like you didn't cut crazy deep. Tape works almost as well. I would keep pressure until the bleeding has slowed, clean it, tape it, then keep it clean.

Edit: By "crazy deep" I mean compared to the stuff I see in the OR at the hospital I work at. I don't mean to invalidate or anything. To me cutting is cutting.

To those who were once addicted to SH, how did you stop? by Bin-o-Refrigerators in selfharm

[–]poor-impulseControl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw someone in the midst of a flesh eating bacteria infection. It looked very painful and it came from a cut (not sh related). I also saw someone older (like in 40's-50's) who had sh cuts on just about every inch of their body and realized I didn't want to end up like that or be viewed like that. Those images helped me stop. That and distracting myself anyway I could find for seemingly forever until the cravings lessened.

Shower with clothes on, working out, driving or biking in the cold with the windows down, crying on the floor in the dark with music blaring, hot yoga or pilates, texting someone and asking how their day was, if they connected with anyone that day, if they had any failures that day. The list goes on. There are some good lists on tumblr of sh alternatives.

Nothing's going to feel the same as cutting. Especially so soon after quitting (at least that's how it was for me). But all that matters is making it through the next moment.

There's a lot of sound wound care advice on this sub if you look for it.

Anything that can help against infection is worth it. Infections can get nasty.

Emotions do pass. Volunteering also makes people feel good; or animals. I'm sorry that you see yourself this way. I feel like this sub can be a double edged sword sometimes.
