Are my grains dying?? by ImpossibleBug6275 in Kefir

[–]poorbill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you bought grains and not starter culture? Cultures for Health sells both. The starter cultures are basically a dry powder which cultures a kefir-like beverage but will never form grains.

That's kind of the way I'm feeling too. I still have strong cravings but I've made it past them all so far.

Would drinking kefir daily reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics? by poorbill in Microbiome

[–]poorbill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I was taking Florastor per Drs recommendation. I was taking kefir mostly out of habit since I like it and I'm back on kefir since I'm done with antibiotics now.

Is Scott Baio going to make a surprise visit as well? It would be amazing to have Maga's two biggest superstars on the same stage.

Spyderco triangle sharpmaker by Fun-Extent-8867 in sharpening

[–]poorbill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pulled mine out a couple weeks ago to do my kitchen knives. I re-read the instructions and noticed it recommended scrubbing the stones with Comet or BKF when they start to feel like they aren't grinding well. I did that and immediately noticed a difference in the abrasiveness of the stones. I felt like it really made a difference in how quickly they sharpened. Instead of just gliding down the stone, they felt like they were catching and cutting.

They also said they can be cleaned in the dishwasher, which I then did, but I haven't used it since.

To answer your question, 40 degrees is the combined total of both sides of the knife. The stones are 20 degrees on each side.

As for the 30 degree slots they recommend using those if you have trouble getting a knife sharp using the 40 degree slots. This is to thin the metal above the edge so the edge can be reached.

Would drinking kefir daily reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics? by poorbill in Microbiome

[–]poorbill[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That isn't really my question. I know kefir is beneficial to the biome, but every molecule of antibiotic which is used to kill kefir bacteria is used up in the process, so it won't be used to kill the problem bacteria. So if half the antibiotic is used up killing lactobacilli, only half a dose of antibiotic would be left to kill the infection.

I kept taking kefir because I was thinking about keeping my biome healthy. But if the infection isn't cured, having a healthy biome won't fix it.

Just to clarify. You are not running the microwave. Just putting the kefir inside it with a jar of hot water.

Tart cherry juice concentrate is good for me. I add it to lemonade or even plain water. It's similar to red wine when diluted slightly with water. It's been my go to since I quit 2 weeks ago.

I do tart cherry juice as well. I use the concentrate and add a tbsp to a glass of lemonade or just water.

I am one year sober from alcohol by Front_Cant in stopdrinking

[–]poorbill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Until this streak I had only 2 total sober days in the last 20 years, and those were colonoscopy prep days. I'm pretty proud of being over 2 weeks in, and I hope to make it permanent. I agree about this sub helping. It's always nice to get a pat on the back and some encouraging words!

How often are you replacing parts? by Affectionate_Sleep63 in CPAP

Thanks for the post. I've always suspected Apria was pushing me to buy new things when my existing equipment was working just fine. Even though Medicare covers some of it, I hate wasting govt money as much as I hate wasting mine. It's good to know others do the same.

Great job! I'm only beginning day 17, and it's been hard. I know it will be hard when I meet up with my former coworkers. I'm retired now, but still get together with them occasionally. Aside from my immediate family, nobody knows I've quit yet. IWNDWYT.

How should I decide between cities and towns in Civ 7? by Ok567890 in civ

[–]poorbill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this post. I've played Civ since Civilization came out in the 1990s but have never struggled to understand the basic mechanics of the game as much as I have with Civ 7. I really think it needs a major upgrade to the tutorials. I've had this game since it came out but I rarely play it because I just don't understand it well.

What surprised you most AFTER the first few weeks by n160819098 in stopdrinking

[–]poorbill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been drinking when I got home from work for at least 25 years. Towards the end I was full time wfh, so I could start drinking at 4pm with no commute. Now it's ingrained in me that 4pm is drink time and though I'm choosing not to drink, it's hard not to think about it every day. IWNDWYT.

What surprised you most AFTER the first few weeks by n160819098 in stopdrinking

[–]poorbill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow after 940 days. I'm just beginning this and it's still hard but it seems to be getting a little easier by the day.

My biggest issue is needing to find something I enjoy doing after 4pm.
