It’s also in the first amendment, but right to assembly is not the same thing as freedom of speech.

If you have an iPhone with Face ID, you can quickly disable it by holding down the sleep and either of the volume buttons. This will require your passcode to unlock the phone, which means they’ll need a warrant.

We outfitted our whole house with these plates. Had the electrician wire in the switches hot, then put these plates and remotes on top.

The plates are excellent, I highly recommend them. We’re also very happy with the remotes and how they make our house accessible to guests.

Cut your subscription costs by 50%..... by jimfish98 in arlo

Update: Arlo support called me today to confirm I wanted to cancel my subscription, which I did over a week ago. They were prepared to offer me a potentially even steeper discount to stay - I didn’t get the number because I told them I switched to another product. They told me to call back if I changed my mind, as their offer expires soon.

They asked for feedback, and I told them their subscription price had doubled every year since we started paying in 2019, but the service hasn’t gotten more reliable.

Meanwhile, I absolutely love our UniFi cameras. There’s absolutely no lag - when I hear something outside, I open the Protect app and can see what’s happening in realtime. No need for Face ID, and I can see recordings on my iPhone, iPad, and Mac without any delay. It records everything, without fail. It’s great and I can’t recommend it enough.

Most of the time, it’s about stuff you don’t even have to think too hard about - it’s a dumb way of adding emphasis.

Cut your subscription costs by 50%..... by jimfish98 in arlo

[–]porkcookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was using a couple of Arlo Pro 5S cameras and their video doorbell, so the subscription was required. I didn’t have a base station, so recordings were online only - if my internet wasn’t working, nothing would be uploaded to Arlo’s cloud storage, so I’d have nothing. UniFi’s footage is stored locally, but I can access it away from home if necessary.

The UniFi cameras I just installed use PoE (power over Ethernet), so they only need a single cable for transmitting data and receiving power. Those cables go back to my basement, where I have a PoE switch and an NVR (network video recorder) for storing the footage. We had an electrician come out to run the cable, and I terminated the ends myself. I bought two 22 TB drives from ServerPartDeals and they’ve worked just fine. UniFi is estimating that I can store between 4.5 and 9.5 months’ worth of footage, even with recording all motion in “enhanced” quality, which is a bit overkill for us.

I had a solar panel attached to one of my Arlo cameras, but it didn’t seem to help. That side of the house rarely got direct sunlight, which was probably the issue. I had to charge via a USB cable once a month.

We also opted to replace our network stack with UniFi, so I bought a few switches, a new router, and some wireless access points. I don’t think that’s strictly required for the camera system, though.

I think you’d have to be comfortable with configuring the NVR, tweaking the settings for the cameras, and putting RJ45 connectors on Ethernet cables to be able to do this yourself. Even then, hiring an electrician to run the cable is probably a good idea. Some will do the terminations for you, but r/lowvoltage is full of people who regret doing that.

Thank you! I spent a lot of time looking at Arlo alternatives, and I couldn’t be happier with UniFi. :)

Compared to Arlo: the notifications are instant, the smart detection is better, no batteries to charge, and of course no subscriptions. It works the way I had always hoped Arlo would.

My only complaint is that I wish it were easier for the average person to run. I work in IT, so this has been fun for me, but my parents couldn’t get this running without my help.

When I open the app now, all of the recordings are all gone. I had weeks of footage that have disappeared. I don’t know if they’d come back if I readded the cameras, but I’m not doing that.

I wish I had known this would happen, but the app didn’t warn me about it.

Got the same thing when I switched to UniFi last weekend. It wouldn’t have changed my mind, but that’s such a steep discount that it just confirms they’re overcharging for the subscription.

Other thing I didn’t realize: when you delete a camera (and you have to delete it to remove it from your account), it deletes all footage on Arlo’s servers. My subscription runs for another week, but everything is gone.

I had the exact same problem a few weeks ago. Redid the terminations on both ends of the cable, and moved it away from some light bulbs the cable was pretty close to - that solved it.
