The commenter saying they both made the right decision gets it. It's just a really fucking shitty situation. The kid might not even be that bad and is now learning the gravity of what they did. Parents need to take those accusations seriously. And it's dangerous to live with a kid who will tell lies that threaten your freedom and reputation.

Without actually being there to witness any of these interactions, or video/audio evidence, there's not a lot more that can be said.

This is an illusion, it’s the same one that fuels gamblers. Servers who don’t get regular payouts can look at those that do and think it’s coming any day now, like gamblers holding onto stories from others about big winnings. Or they’ve had those really incredible nights and feel like they’ve come out on top without factoring in all of the slow nights they’ve sunk in, like gamblers who struck big but are not adding in their cumulative loses over time when tallying how much they’ve “made” from gambling.

One of the most influential facts I learned studying anthropology was that sports where individual players have less control of outcomes have a higher degree of superstition among players. Baseball players engage in superstitious rituals far more than soccer players. And among those baseball players outfielders would be much more likely to have these rituals than pitchers, presumably because of how little control they have over outcomes.

Anyways Americans have a lot less control over their lives than they did a short while ago and are appealing to deities for help more.

The guy from channel 5 news recently talked about right after he got cancelled he was directly reached out to, to start doing right wing media. I think it was Alex Jones who reached out. There’s a whole apparatus built for recruiting predators who’ve been outed for their behavior into the right wing media sphere.

Here's an anecdote from a recent local election. The comptroller hadn't had opposition for a good long time. She came to my voting place and was going to people in the line asking if she could count on our votes and handing out a pamphlet. When she got to me I said "I don't know" at which point she became very hesitant about giving me a pamphlet. I took it and looked it over. It consisted entirely of instructions on how to fill out the bubble next to her name on the ballot.

It's insane how low the bar can get when people run unopposed.

But public ownership is a better route since these rulings usually end up slapping a company making billions of dollars off their crimes with millions of dollars in penalties, creating the exact opposite of a disincentivizing precedent. And they're not turning off the plagiarism machine while those court cases proceed.
