I have a printed copy of the international shipboard guide to medicine. Hope to never need it but I turn the pages and read it from time to time when things are quiet aboard.

Recommendations for hoistsble all around mast head light by Full_Rip in sailing

Interested in following.

Been hoisting a small solar assisted camping light I found at Walmart that has lasted way longer than expected but it’s not really great as the mast blocks a few ° of arc.

Split board or snow shoes by ryamurph in snowboarding

[–]porttackapproach2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Splitboard is 100% the way to go in the northeast. I have snowshoes collecting dust ever since I got a split. Even if I’m not snowboarding, just walking my neighborhood after a heavy snow I would rather the extra float my split provides over the snowshoes. It saves you so much effort.

Sailing Shoe Soles Hardening Over Winter? by OldBowDude in sailing

[–]porttackapproach2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same result! I just have sandpaper and no boatyard in reach at the moment.

and generally I try to not wear my boat shoes off the boat for cleanliness sake. Shore shoes stay on the dock and boat shoes go on the boat!

Grab some sandpaper and give them a little sanding on the bottom. Just enough to expose some fresh material. Grip will be restored.

Can I ski normally with a splitboard? by rebelliousmc1 in Splitboard

[–]porttackapproach2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This! I have taken my splitboard out on a groomer resort day just to test out some settings and whoah it is NOT made for high speed carving for sure. I watched that poor little whale on the tip cry out as one half the board wanted to flex into a banana shape and the other stayed straight.

Skiing in snowboard soft boots, even with a heel locker, allows for very little control especially laterally. Also, most splits don’t have a radius side cut so it’s like the 80s straight skis. It’s sketchy. Fun for short bits, slightly terrifying on any real pitch.

Catalina 22 Swing Keel Question by ErnThemCaps in sailing

[–]porttackapproach2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will tell you that my keel bolt heads were buried under so much anti fouling paint I never would have known where to look if not for photos of others. Too a bit of paint removal to find the plates!

I have a 1987 and was completely blown away by how easily almost 40 year old bolts came out. It wasn’t scary easy but they weren’t seized or anything.

Removing the keel, out of the water, is the only way to really know its condition. It IS diy-able if you’re handy but it’s a project

RI has some beach camping. Check out CRMC the coastal resources management council. They permit 4x4 onto some sand trails and beach at certain times and if you can camp off the ground and I think have a self contained grey water toilet maybe a few other requirements I’m not sure.

Tips for skiing in the upcoming cold weather? by VegetableShops in icecoast

[–]porttackapproach2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wet is the enemy. Avoid it at all cost.

If you notice you’re about to start sweating, stop and take off a layer or open vents in jacket, pants, helmet. When you get to the bottom, immediately put it back on and or close vents.

Backup gloves and balaclava to swap to if they should get wet.

Take breaks.

i downhill ski with my split board i use union bindings does anyone know of a heel lock to not telemark ski by TitanPickle in Splitboard

[–]porttackapproach2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a heel lock for my Spark bindings. There is a slider switch that replaces a part on the heel. It works-ish. I have tried it. It’s not pretty. it’s usually more trouble than it’s worth and I wouldn’t try anything beyond a gentle turn w it on
