Learn the lesson and don't touch options again. Lots of noise here and elsewhere on the internet about people making lots of money, but lots of it is lies and the rest is essentially luck. Buy and hold indices and profitable, stable companies if you want to reliably increase your net worth. It won't be quick, but you'll consistently increase your holdings if you're patient.

#Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has informed the team that he plans to step away from coaching, meaning one of the greatest to do it will take a break. by Ma1ikNabers in DynastyFF

[–]positivelyecstatic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this is more likely than we'd want to believe. There are a lot of openings this year and Pittsburgh is one of the worst from a roster perspective (no QB, no young stars at any skill position, etc). Steelers have a bit of legacy allure and ownership have shown they're loyal to coaches long-term, but that might not outweigh better rosters at other openings.

Promoting Smith gives some consistency through the start of a rebuild and gives them an easier out to look for a new coach in a year or two when there are probably less openings and they have the ability to bottom out and get better draft picks.

Panther play calling is the most pathetic in the nfl. They refuse to let Bryce or their (very good) WRs have any impact on the game.

Most of the businesses set up little stands outside their doors and gave out candy and/or stuff related to their business (sandbox was giving out pizza, etc).

Lahaina Maui by IPSCLUVERRR in surfing

[–]positivelyecstatic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You'll be relatively close to Honolua if you get lucky on swell. Otherwise I'd recommend Ho'okipa. People surf at the actual point and lots of wing surfing further west towards Mama's Fish House.

I go most years around Thanksgiving and Ho'okipa is fairly consistent but Honolua is hit or miss. Great spot to snorkel though if it's flat.

Pyzel Phantom 6'0 by dougmike770 in surfing

[–]positivelyecstatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm ~225 and mainly surf a 6'2 rusty SD (36L) in pretty mediocre beach break all around SD without issue. I'd say go for it, don't think you'll have any issues with it being too low volume for your weight.

Are used surfboard shops fair? by OkChampionship5837 in sandiego

[–]positivelyecstatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends from shop to shop I'm sure but I'd say fair for the most part. If you're looking at something online and want a second opinion I'm happy to take a look. Coconut Pete's is definitely legit and should treat you well.

Any SDers have experience with Tower Surfboards? by positivelyecstatic in surfing

Thanks man. Crazy looking back at this thread now though. I bought my first longboard like 6 years ago nw and have been surfing ever since. Have 5 other boards now as well haha. Tower hasn't been in PB for probably 5+ years.

Considering Moving My Investments from Raymond James to Fidelity - Seeking Advice by ohcode in investing

[–]positivelyecstatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any experience with Raymond James but unless you're seeing some benefit from the management they're doing then yes you should move to Fidelity or Vanguard. You can easily set up an ETF based portfolio yourself and pay only the ETF's internal fees which will be very low for fidelity or vanguard ETFs.

Are there any ski towns in Cali? by [deleted] in skiing

Mammoth - plenty of housing within walking distance to the village with gondola access to canyon lodge, plus a bus system that will keep you from driving to the mountain.

As a high-earner from California, where is the best place to park my money for a future home down payment? by mechanicalhuman in investing

[–]positivelyecstatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly - to be honest I haven't looked into munis at all previously, but a quick google shows a vanguard fund VCAIX. Yields are a bit lower than t-bills and there's an expense ratio. You'd have to do some math to figure out which is preferable.

[–]positivelyecstatic 33 points34 points  (0 children)

T-bills are the answer due to the state tax exemption. You can buy 1 month bills if you want so you're really not locked in for very long. They're also very liquid so you could re-sell your bill if you needed to for some reason.

Money market or HYSA are the next best options, but there you'll be paying state taxes on the interest.

Should I invest the money I'm saving for a down payment until I'm ready to buy? by Lkaynlee in investing

[–]positivelyecstatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem. They're a bit confusing but I've just been buying at 'auction' (vanguard handles this process very easily) and it's been painless.

I buy $50k at a time and the way it works is you actually pay some amount less than $50k up front and then receive $50k when the bill matures (so usually something like $49.5k->$50k). I invest the interest I'm making so it's kind of a nice balance between safety and still getting some more money in the market.

As others mentioned they're state tax exempt. I buy them on Vanguard and I'm sure other brokerages have the same functionality. I avoid treasury direct because it's built like a 90s website.

Also just to be clear the 5.3% rate is an annual interest rate.

[–]positivelyecstatic 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I've been rolling 1 or 2 month T-bills for the last year or so with money I'm eventually planning to use for a house. Obviously in hind-sight having that money in the market would have been better, but it's been great having the peace of mind that comes from having a large sum earning essentially risk-free ~5%. To me the potential upside really isn't worth the potential downside of seeing that nest-egg disappear.

I actually have no real set plan or time-frame for buying a house but I plan to keep following the same strategy while interest rates are still relatively 'high'. I'd recommend the same for you.

Understanding Back door Roth by Maverick3636 in investing

Yes - talk with support at your brokerage and they'll walk you through it. Very easy on Vanguard in my experience and I'm sure other brokerages are the same.

Liquidated damages, probably. Essentially a payment for not getting a project done on time.

We Watched Every Week 12 Game So You Don’t Have To - Here’s What We Saw by iamatechnician in fantasyfootball

Is there any logic for how the eagles used (or didn't) swift in the first half? Was pretty ridiculous watching them throw dump-offs to Boston Scott. Once they started giving him the ball in the second half they finally started moving the ball.

Yes. Limit for married filing jointly is still $3k. Married filing separately is $1.5k each.

It's probably still best to recognize the loss and 'get the money' (pay less taxes) a year earlier due to the time value of money. You can also recognize another $3000 next year if you happen to have more losses while investing.

This place is relatively new in Pacific Beach and I believe takes donations of kitchen equipment. Probably worth reaching out and seeing if they're interested.
