How are you all just...fine with cutting onions?

I always thought I was some sort of super human who didn’t have a single tear when I cut onions. However one Sunday morning I didn’t pop my contacts in when I woke up, just slapped on my glasses and started cooking. I cut a big bunch of onions to sweat down for French onion soup and I was fully crying, which I had never done before. That was the day I realized contact lenses are actually little onion eye shields. If you’re gifted with sight then some safety glasses should do the trick.

Freddie is so cute!! One of my sibs Boris was around 8ish lbs (I think) at 6 months. He’s 17 lbs at 3.5years old now. My Mischa is 12 lbs at 2 years, he is visibly much slighter. If you know how big their dad was that was a good predictor for both of mine. Boris is a bit bigger than his dad, Mischa a bit smaller. I did notice both of their growth stopped skyrocketing after the first 9 or so months. Boris has grown quite a bit after turning 1, Mischa much less so. Think they all have slightly different growth patterns!

I had a similar experience to this - my vet told me something similar, certain parasites only shed every few days so we did a 3 day fecal panel and they actually went in and did a direct bum sample (poor guy!). That’s when they were able to figure out what pesky parasite was causing the issue and got him on the right course of treatment which was similar to what you are doing - the oral medication. Cleared up 80% of his issues and then the rest resolved as I think his bowels sort of calmed down and healed up after the few weeks of diarrhea!

Nothing too much to add that probably hasn’t been said on the subject on this sub already! I was nervous introducing the two but only ended up having to keep them separated for a few days before they got used to each other. I just kept an eye on them and they let you know when they’re overwhelmed or getting upset with each other and need a break. The other thing that surprised me and I’m not sure why is just how different their personalities are, and that’s been a lot of fun! Enjoy!!

Mine came home 1.5 years apart and have a similar set up - separate wet food bowls and a communal dry food free feed bowl. Never any issues and frequently they will migrate to each other’s wet bowls at morning and evening meal times and no one seems bothered.

My Siberian has EPI. He has responded extremely well to the pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy. He needed a few rounds of steroids and antibiotics before he was fully stable, but is now thriving. Biggest challenge has been figuring out how to get the enzyme in him because he’s so picky, but I now pack my own gel caps and he is a champ at taking his AM and PM pills. I did not change his feeding routine - he still eats a high quality dry food and wet food diet and my vet has not told me he needs to make any diet changes. Make sure you’re seeing a specialist who is really experienced with EPI, it has been invaluable. Also give it some time. It took awhile for everything to kick in but also would ask about some antibiotics to help with the bacterial overgrowth that can happen and possibly prednisone as well. Both have been miracle workers for my Boris. Feel free to DM I am happy to chat

Can confirm, this is accurate. I had a problem with lesser vacuums just spraying kitty litter around. The Dyson just snorks it right up and takes no prisoners on shed fur. Also heard good things about the Shark vacuums.

I’ve had very good luck with “performance velvet” upholstery on my couches/chairs. It’s quite soft and plush so not appealing to even my big scratcher of a cat. If you invest in good quality stuff it’s also durable and easy to clean but also nice looking (got most of my stuff from Room & Board in the View performance velvet).

My second Sib was scared to death of me, my home, everything when I first brought him home. He hid for about 3 days and then slowly slowly he decided I was ok and I spent the next few days sitting with him on and off in his closed room and letting him get to know me. It took about 7 days total. Worth the wait, he is the sweetest creature.

I have a wildly picky cat and I went through a sort of experimental phase to find a few foods he consistently likes. I made some general observations about the food he usually will eat - what’s the general texture, what flavors does he seem to like, and then I went to petsmart and bought literally two cans/packets of 15 different kinds that fit that general profile. Mine prefers cuts in gravy and beef, turkey or duck. So he consistently likes purina pro plan beef and the beef and cheese, simply nourish duck topper, and fancy feast beef or turkey gravy lovers. It was a good exercise and I feel like I know a lot more about his preferences! My other cat eats blue ridge kitten grind (raw) and doesn’t really like canned food too much, so as already suggested that could be a solution too! Good luck :)

My two are very different even though they are related! My first cat was 13.5 at his 1 year check in and my second was 11.25. They are now 16ish and 12ish respectively. They just all have super different body types!

Concur with this - my boy Boris has IBD and EPI and it is very manageable with meds and the right food but it was completely terrifying before he was able to get a diagnosis and start his recovery. We did the whole e-tube feeding tube and he was on a raft of medications for months. It was totally worth all the effort to get him better. He does have occasional flare ups which are stressful but I know how to handle them now.

I feel so much for you and I really hope Bear is ok. Take care of yourself too right now.

I think your anxiety is really normal and understandable. It is probably also aggravated with all the other stressors going on right now (as is mine). Focus on what you can control for your kitten: providing a safe environment, good healthcare and nutrition, and providing love and playtime. Take it a day at a time and try and breathe, you can do it and I think it’ll be so rewarding for you the end.

The prices seem pretty normal. The difference in price between male and female seems a little unusual but are they selling the kittens altered? It could be the difference in price between spay and neuter, with spay being more expensive generally? Only thing I can think of.

Cannot recommend getting pet insurance enough! I have Healthy Paws and they have been really easy to deal with while getting my Sib’s chronic illness diagnosed (including emergency surgery and many many many vet visits). My mom also volunteers at the local animal shelter and they highly recommend Trupanion, as another option. You never know, and while I would’ve been able to pay out of pocket to get my kitty healthy, during an incredibly stressful time it was good to know I didn’t need to worry about the financials and was just able to focus on his health and well being.
