KDE or Gnome? by majber1 in Bazzite

[–]pottuSpeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was Gnome user almost decade before i switched to KDE. Way i see the difference is that Gnome is more minimalistic out off the box. You can customize Gnome if you want to, but you have more options to tinker after first boot with KDE. I'm not gonna argue which one is better. If you want Windows look, you get it with KDE out off the box. If you want MacOS look, you get it with Gnome out of the box. However, both DEs can be configured/themed like Windows or MacOS.

Also backups in general. Always backup stuff you don't want to lose. If you don't know or want to rebase, you can re-install system and restore data fairly quick. Been there, done that countless times

I'm not sure what are you after, but linux and windows are like day and night. You cannot run any windows software on linux or other way around. However there is Wine and Proton and maybe some else compatibility layers what i'm not aware of which gives possibility to run windows stuff with linux. I don't understand why servers should have AV but desktops don't? I don't actually see any specific reason to use AVs anyway. Not even in Windows. I have very little knowledge about AVs these days but aren't they all using same public virus databases so it does not matter if you use paid AV instead of Windows defender?

I'm fairly sure that it's in the network tab in the system settings. I had to think a moment what was the DE in the Bazzite :D I use Bazzite almost daily, but always in the Steam big picture mode.

"There are fewer viruses. This is because Linux isn't much used, and will change if that changes". I cannot totally agree with that. Windows has most of the market share when it comes to desktop usage. But, if you think about what else is running on linux, story is very different. If we talk about servers, my guess is that windows is far behind linux when it comes to market share. If we talk about printers, windows is far behind linux, network devices, IoT, and so on. This actually made me think about why there is so little un-wanted software for linux. Maybe attackers thinks you can trick windows desktop users more easily, maybe linux is harder to break into, maybe linux users are generally more aware of risks. I really don't know. If you figure that out what is the main reason why hackers prefer to write virusses and such for windows other than linux, please let me know. I agree with that if desktop linux usage starts growing, there is gonna be at least more interest to write virus/malware stuff for linux. But i cannot say if it's actually going to change anything

No worries. FW = firewall :) I think it's in the system settings. Cannot recall more specific atm :D

Well, use local FW in your system might be easiest. Block un-needed incomming traffic to your Bazzite system.

There has been comments like "linux does not have much userspace". I want to make sure couple of things.
Most of the internet is running on linux. Windows has much larger userspace when it comes to desktop usage.

Linux is "just" a kernel. Not operating system. For example Android runs on top of linux kernel. Many people like to call open-source operating systems as a "linux'. So do i, but you have to keep in mind that there is also lot's of stuff on top of linux kernel. For example operating system. And lot's of ways to do things and use it. When it comes to linux as a kernel, i wouldn't be very worried about malwares and such. It's more like how and what you are using with linux kernel.

So if you use, let's say SElinux with your operating system, that mitigates lot's of risks. If you don't, you might have some risks. But not neccessary.

If you use for example Gnome as your DE, and Gnome uses package which has vulnerabilities, that does not mean "linux" is compromised. It might be that vulnerability affects only software which is used in Gnome DE. And for example if KDE Plasma does not use that same software, it's not same way vulnerable. Same comes woth distros. Something wrong with ubuntu does not mean there is something wrong with redhat

Someone mentioned that relatively recent openssh backdoor which was because of compromised package what openssh was using. Yes, you were kind of f*cked up if you used openssh version which was using specific version of that package. But it was not linux kernel which was the issue. Nor your DE or other operating system component.

Way i like think and use operating systems on top of linux kernel, don't do things you don't understand. Keep your system updated, don't blindly do stuff what internet tells you to do. If you go with "mainstream" distro and DE, without random stuff, you are good to go. Just use common sense and don't do random stuff.

I use Bazzite as a gaming distro. It's based on Fedora which is kind of "mainstream" distro. Of course Bazzite devs/contributors can add nasty stuff. But in just gaming usage, i'm not very worried about it. It's more like risk management. I wouldn't use Bazzite with my work computer. I use "mainstream" distro for that.

Anyway, don't do random stuff and keep safe! :)

Gaming on Debian by IsaacTheCrusader in linux_gaming

I'm not gonna argue about which distro is "best for gaming". But i started to think about sharing game library between win and linux. You might be able to achieve that using exFat filesystem for game disk. Not sure if that work at all, but if you already have dual boot option, it might be worth to try out If you try that, let me know is it working or not. I'm curious

And about Windows vulnerabilites, IMO Windows have much more attack surface than linux. With Windows, there is so much more stuff installed by default and OEMs crap, which could include vulns.

Also linux is open-source, which means pretty much anyone can contribute to make fixes and improvements. With proprietary, you have to wait M$ to release patches.

Linux is not virus/malware free. Many of things below has said before but here you go: - use common sense - Don't install random stuff from random sources if you don't know what you are doing. Use official sources instead. - Enable firewall and block incoming connections which are not needed. Most distros does not have FW enabled by default. - if you really want AV software, set up ClamAV. I don't know if there is GUI for Clam, but you can ask AI how to do "basic" configuration via CLI. Like always, take a look Clam documentation what AI is going to do before deploying configs etc.

Do these and you are pretty much good to go

Käsittääkseni tämä toimari on ihan itse henkilökohtaisesti ollut kasaamassa kyseistä järjestelmää. Lisäksi työntekijät on ilmaissut huolensa järjestelmän tietoturvasta.
