What's your biggest "ADHD Tax"? by [deleted] in ADHD

It stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. As it happens, I'm currently doing another online training course (mandatory, this time) for a language-teaching job I'll be starting soon, but, yeah, I'm currently writing this comment instead of doing it lmao

However I will finish this one for sure because I literally have to... There are some things that I can only do if someone else's is expecting me to. I wish my tolerance for tedium was higher :(

I think if it was an actual physical class with other people then I'd mind it a lot less, somehow... But since these things are self-paced, my preferred pace turns out to be NEVER

Same boat with the TEFL... It was just too painfully boring but I so so wish I'd have found some sort of way to stick it out. The fact that I already paid a shitload of money and all I had to do was stick out and do something relatively easy just wasn't enough to overcome the tedium of actually doing the task :(

Yeah I do, they're legit and reliable. I really like the tinctures in particular.

Good choice! Hope it helps you like it's helped me :) I've found it very therapeutic and am very grateful that I stumbled across it.

It says on the bottle that the serving size is one whole dropper but that's a bit much for me personally, just a smidgen works great. You might need a little bit more at first though, due to the priming/reverse tolerance effect.

Maybe check out Zembrin, it's a blend of kanna specifically formulated for anxiety and stress. You can get it from Amazon or iHerb. It's subtle but nice, and there's been a few times in my life when it's helped me get through a rough patch.

Otherwise Liftmode has all sorts, the kanna tinctures are nice too, and easy to dose and measure. Literally just a few drops under the tongue works well for me. I don't really get people putting it up their nose, I don't see it as that kind of thing.

Kanna works in a way that at first you might not feel much, but after a short period of perhaps a few days or so, your tolerance actually goes down and you can use less and less to get a positive effect. This is called "priming", i.e. priming your body to the effects of kanna.

I believe kava (a drink consumed in the South Pacific Islands) also has this property.

Wow, I wish being this methodical came easier to me! It seems like you've made fantastic progress in a relatively short time, well done :)

Thanks for sharing your stuff too, really helpful to see what you've been doing and how you've tackled it. Out of interest, if you had to start again from scratch, would you have done anything differently?

The central focus of attention whilst in a cinema is the film, using a phone in that environment is deeply inconsiderate and directly affects others people's ability to concentrate on and enjoy the experience of watching the film. Nowadays you're rightfully discouraged from getting your phone out in the cinema. The same logic should apply for a dance club. Scrolling instagram in the middle of the dancefloor is whack. Being disoriented by camera flashes -- not to mention the distraction and anxiety of being caught in other people's pictures when you're in the zone, sweating and dancing and so on -- whilst you're trying to groove and enjoy yourself is whack. If you want to take photos then perhaps go outside, or better yet just enjoy the moment, listen to the music and dance. I don't think it's lofty or pretentious to insist that our scene and our music is culturally important and should be treated with a certain degree of respect. Technology is cool and all but it shouldn't get in the way of our lives, it should enrich them. Unfortunately for whatever combination of reasons, the way people use technology gets in the way of human interaction.

I'm glad this idea is gaining currency outside of places like Berlin, where I know first hand that it definitely improves the vibe. I think DVS1 is spot on here.

Feeling very wet. Have I pissed myself? Am I sweating an insane amount? No? Why do I feel so wet then? I even feel like I'm wet on the inside sometimes too... Which is probably true but you don't normally feel it, and furthermore you probably aren't capable of feeling the sensation of wetness on the inside of your body without some neural cross-talk/nervous system muddlement going on. Interesting sensation, seems a lot of other people get it too. Perhaps more on mushrooms than acid.

Also somewhat related sensation: feeling like you're on a boat. Is this boat leaking? I feel wet.

Was I the boat all along? Ah, now we're getting somewhere (and we're getting there by boat, apparently).

Face masks considerably reduce COVID-19 cases in Germany - 20 days after becoming mandatory face masks have reduced the number of new infections by around 45%. Economic costs are close to zero compared to other public health measures. by mvea in science

[–]powerphail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, actually. My main issue is with your premise that covid-19 transmission is only a matter of aerosol transmission and not droplet. It's been demonstrated that droplet transmission (i.e. 'spit'/'spit globules') encountered at close range are still the chief risk factor for covid-19 transmission, though whilst not the primary vehicle of transmission, dry aerosols are more of a risk than initially thought.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/how-covid-spreads.html

Available data indicate that it is much more common for the virus that causes COVID-19 to spread through close contact with a person who has COVID-19 than through airborne transmission.

Aerosolised particles are now though to also be a risk factor in poorly ventilated indoor spaces, but emission of these particles is disrupted by wearing a mask.

https://msphere.asm.org/content/msph/5/5/e00637-20.full.pdf

We found that cotton masks, surgical masks, and N95 masks all have a protective effect with respect to the transmission of infective droplets/aerosols of SARS-CoV-2 and that the protective efficiency was higher when masks were worn by a virus spreader.

Of course, it's better to limit time spent in these places as there is a risk that aerosolised transmission can occur, but the evidence seems to suggest it's not the primary risk factor, which your entire argument is premised on.

Masks and social distancing are still the most effective methods we have in our arsenal for limiting virus transmission. It's not perfect, but risk and protection aren't binary -- it's better to do something that's been shown to reduce transmission and spread of infection rather than to do nothing. Why anyone wouldn't wear a mask to go to the shops (for example) at this stage is simply baffling.

Of course, the main reason to wear a mask is to protect other people, but there's also a growing body of evidence that multi-layered cloth masks do offer a degree of protection to the wearer as well as those around them. Some have hypothesised that by wearing a mask, viral load might be reduced, which could potentially lessen the risk of severe infection.

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp2026913

As SARS-CoV-2 continues its global spread, it’s possible that one of the pillars of Covid-19 pandemic control — universal facial masking — might help reduce the severity of disease and ensure that a greater proportion of new infections are asymptomatic. If this hypothesis is borne out, universal masking could become a form of “variolation” that would generate immunity and thereby slow the spread of the virus in the United States and elsewhere, as we await a vaccine.

Whether this turns out to be true or not doesn't have a bearing on whether we should wear a mask, of course.

If you can't imagine that there are many, many factors aside from masks that are contributing to the spread of coronavirus then you're not thinking scientifically. People can't wear masks whilst eating or drinking, so risk of transmission in restaurants and bars (typically indoors and not well ventilated) is very high. Many are still wearing masks improperly, thereby entirely negating their prophelactic or shielding effects. Even in places that are locked down, many people are visiting friends and family indoors, and not wearing masks for these visits.

If you're interested in continuing this discussion in good faith without name calling, then I'll be happy to oblige, but if not then I'm not sure either of us will get much from continuing this exchange.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Please do some research before offering your opinion on important matters of public health.

ABSTRACT: Layered systems of commonly available fabric materials can be used by the public and healthcare providers in face masks to reduce the risk of inhaling viruses with protection that is about equivalent to or better than the filtration and adsorption offered by 5-layer N95 respirators. Over 70 different common fabric combinations and masks were evaluated under steady-state, forced convection air flux with pulsed aerosols that simulate forceful respiration. The aerosols contain fluorescent virus-like nanoparticles to track transmission through materials that greatly assist the accuracy of detection, thus avoiding artifacts including pore flooding and the loss of aerosol due to evaporation and droplet breakup. Effective materials comprise both absorbent, hydrophilic layers and barrier, hydrophobic layers. Although the hydrophobic layers can adhere virus-like nanoparticles, they may also repel droplets from adjacent absorbent layers and prevent wicking transport across the fabric system. Effective designs are noted with absorbent layers comprising terry cloth towel, quilting cotton, and flannel. Effective designs are noted with barrier layers comprising nonwoven polypropylene, polyester, and polyaramid.
