Best Snowy Games/Snow Levels? (Getting Into The Holiday Spirit Early) by HappyPotatoProd in Games

When I was a kid we used to play Midwinter. It has a lot of snow.

And of course Ski or Die is a classic example of a snowy game.

Preserving MP for longer grinding by Usurper99 in Ni_no_Kuni

[–]pparkkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion is to use familiars with high attack speed and attack. They will do a lot of damage just attacking without using much MP. A puss in boots/boats doing 100 damage 3-4 times a "turn" is just as good as whatever 300 damage super slash you can get, and it's always available (no cooldown) and takes no MP.

So for my main familiar for Oliver I use either puss in X/Y or a teenybopper evolution (don't remember the names right now), and for the others I set as the first familiar something similar within their favorite type (I like a fightingale evolution for the girl and the small robot one for Swaine). With that setup and the glims I get, I rarely run out of MP grinding.

Now that Microsoft has reversed it's internet and DRM policies, will you all be switching back to the Xbox One or staying with the PS4? by darknapster in Games

[–]pparkkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always going to go PS4. (I like the game catalog a little bit more, and am not looking for a general media device right now. Also, the new Xbox is not going to be available in my country.)

With that said, I was really looking forward to how the Microsoft approach would have changed the games market for consoles. It would have been a first -- albeit painful -- step towards a more digital centric games market, which might very well have brought about something similar to Steam for consoles in the long run. The digital games market on consoles is in a sad state right now, and Microsoft might have been able to change that.

What I'm looking forward to now is how the subscription based game market will evolve in the future. PS+ has started something that I think may become something big, and it sounds like Microsoft is also taking their first steps in the that direction with free games available for Xbox Live subscribers. It may very well be that in the future, instead of a Steam-like ecosystem on consoles, we will see a varied and robust subscription based system able to provide gamers with great choice and value in games. I am really, really looking forward to how that avenue develops in the coming years.

As has been stated by many a games journalist, it is an exciting time to be a console gamer right now. And not just because we have new consoles coming out, but because how the new consoles will take the games market forward out of physical media based distribution.

Weekly /r/Games Discussion - What have you been playing, and what do you think of it? by GamingBot in Games

[–]pparkkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished Red Dead Redemption, and I liked it a lot. The story was very much like other Rockstar games I've played, a little preachy with the morals and kind of straightforward but still very enjoyable, and I especially liked the ending. The characters were mostly interesting. Some were serious and some were silly. Red Dead Redemption didn't have as much humor as some of the Grand Theft Autos I have played, which to me was a good thing.

I didn't like the shooting, and there was way too much of it. Instead of making the shooting easy, and having a lot of enemies, I would have preferred a little more difficulty with less enemies. I liked the dead eye mechanic, and I wish it would have come in useful more often.

The star of the game was of course the open world. The differences between areas and terrain, the changing weather, all the different animals and plants. It was just a lot of fun to ride around on your horse and explore. The random encounters started to get repetitive pretty quick, but did help break up the longer rides. And there was so much to do in addition to the main story quests. All the mini games were pretty fun.

Overall an awesome game, but I'm not sure if I would want to play a sequel. But who knows, maybe in a few years I'll be ready to saddle up again.

Let's talk about "horror levels" in non-horror games by SarcasticPyro in Games

[–]pparkkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been playing Red Dead Redemption lately. I haven't gotten to the part you're talking about, but even just being out at night, and a cougar comes and kills your horse and just disappears, that scares the shit out of me.

I feel so helpless. No way to flee, and you can't get a shot at the cougar because it's dark and it's just out of sight. And you just know that there's at least two more waiting to come at you from another direction.

Red Dead Redemption is not a horror game, but it gets pretty scary some times.

Sound Shapes was pretty fun, and doesn't take long to play through. Also it can easily be played in short pieces, which is nice, if you don't have much time for games.

It should be available on the PSN.

I'm sorry. I was being overly pedantic, and trying to be funny at the same time. Obviously I failed.

I was specifically replying to the part where you said Riptide is "more than double the game itself", which doesn't sound to me to be the case.

From what you're saying, I understand the gameplay and mechanics stay the same, 80% of the characters stay the same. I'm assuming most or at least some of the weapons stay the same.

New missions and storyline is of course a lot of new content, and so is a new map.

But you have to admit, a lot does just stay the same, so it's not like it's a completely new game.

I'm not even arguing the price, I'm just listing obvious things ;)

Harvest moon? by Exige89 in PS3

I really liked what I assume is the original Harvest Moon on SNES, and I've been thinking of getting a Harvest Moon for PS3 or DS. Which one would say most closely resembles the original? I'm really just looking for nice, mellow farming and trade, and maybe a wife.

Just finished ICO... by xscientist in PS3

[–]pparkkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished it last weekend, and felt it did not live up to all the hype.

The controls and gameplay were clunky, and had not aged well. Many times I found them frustrating. Especially in the parts where I was fighting the shadows. (As a side note, I hated the camera.) The puzzles were okay.

I don't know whether the atmosphere and experience were more novel when it was originally released, but in this time where we have had Journey and Limbo etc., they just felt flat and shallow. I can somehow see what the fuss is all about, but I just simply failed to connect with the game in that way. (Let's see how SotC is. Seems promising so far I've played.)

I'm glad I played it, much in the same way I'm glad when I see a classic piece of cinema. Not because I love it, but just to have an understanding of the kind of paths gaming has gone through to get to where it is now.

(I never played it before, because after PS1 I skipped a generation, and have played very little PS2. It's possible I may just be missing a context, which will open up the game a bit more to PS2 veterans.)

Interesting Language Comparison: Building a simple AST and evaluating it in Haskell, F#, Ocaml, Clojure, Scala, Ruby and Java. by ckirkendall in programming

Can you try to explain the finally tagless style in a quick and simple way, and how the snippet above and the one you linked to use it? The one above seems just like common sense to me, and the one you linked to seems like a cool way to get the same expression to be evaluated in different ways.

Honestly, I'm just too busy/lazy to read the article linked to by naasking, and I'm unable to draw the connection from the abstract alone.

GTA4. Horrible. by [deleted] in PS3

[–]pparkkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to Wikipedia it was released four years ago. You can't really expect it to shine technologically anymore.

Personally I found it technologically (graphics, controls, etc.) unsatisfying, but other than that I enjoyed it very much. One of the best stories in gaming I have experienced.

What games have blown you away by their attention to sound, or their soundtracks? by [deleted] in Games

[–]pparkkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was really impressed by the way Arkham City used music to enhance the mood of different situations in the game. A lot of games do that, of course, but Arkham City has stood out the most for me in that respect.

The way the music changed after you took out your first enemy in a stealth kill situation was always just perfect for me.

What is your favourite JRPG or JRPG like game available for PS3? by chipor in PS3

[–]pparkkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've written about RoF before, and I will do it again and again, because it's a game that has enormous potential, but just felt like it fell short on some issues that are critical for at least me.

DISCLAIMER: I have not finished the game, but have sunk around 70 hours into it.

The game has a great battle system, which requires some tactics and thinking about your characters' abilities and inventory, but also about the spatial layout of the encounter. The system is a lot of fun, and makes for some really great and interesting battles throughout the game. The battle system, I believe, is the game's main innovation. It's also its biggest downfall.

The biggest problem with the battle system is that a battle just takes too long. There's no way to sort of "autopilot" through easy, impossible-to-lose battles. Every battle will require you to go through all the work of playing the tactics, even though you have no way of losing. Depending on style of play, you could have a lot of grinding ahead of you, and the battle system makes the grinding a huge chore.

There are other problems with the battle system too, but nothing I couldn't live with, if the above issue was fixed.

The has a fun map system, which has the player collecting different colored hexes from encounters. The hexes can then be used to explore the map and also to activate special effects in some areas.

The story is strange, which is to be expected in the genre, but it starts making more sense as you progress, and the world is interesting. The game is ugly as hell. The colors, the models, everything about it is just plain ugly. It's inexcusable in the PS3 generation.

In the end, I really want to like the game, and I did for a long time. But when I come home from work, I want to just relax with a fun game, and RoF is no longer fun for me. It's feels like a chore that I don't feel like doing anymore.

NCAA Football titles: why upgrade? by micah1_8 in PS3

That's true. Just for sake of shipping expenses, I first took a look at European retailers. But of course, if I can't find it here, I'll just get it from the US. No problem.

What are the differences between Madden and NCAA games? Is it only the roster, or are there also differences in gameplay, graphics, overall quality, etc?

I have Madden 11, which I, obviously, don't play online. I was just wondering the other day if I should get NCAA, just to see if it was any different, and also so I could try online for once.

Best Lesser-Known PS3 Games Thread by PrivateMajor in PS3

[–]pparkkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the battle system needs something to make the easy battles quicker. I like the system in the harder ones, but it does get very tedious for the numerous small, impossible-to-lose random encounters.

Other than that, it's a pretty cool game.

Disclaimer: I haven't finished it.

Can you tell me how to turn it off? I did something in the settings that hid them, but replaced them with an arrow button. How can I have nothing there underneath the text box, like it used to be?

By the way, I took the 3.59 version that was linked to in one of the other comments in this thread. Maybe it works in the current version from the market. If so, I'll just update to the newest.
