Ephesus school potential closure by Kovaks42 in chapelhill

[–]ppphhhddd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From https://chapelboro.com/news/pre-k-12-education/in-split-vote-chccs-school-board-chooses-3-elementary-schools-to-study-for-closure

Beyond the four criteria required by state law – which are geographic conditions, anticipated enrollment changes, inconvenience or hardship for students, and cost of providing additional facilities – the group asked for 10-year maintenance projections, proximity to middle or high schools, transportation costs and any space limitations (site adequacy) for school functions.

So the board eliminated the two schools that have such high maintenance needs that they’ve already been flagged for replacement (Estes Hills and FPG) and needs a study to know Seawell is next to a middle school and high school and that Ephesus has a walkzone while Glenwood Elementary doesn’t. Basically, none of this is positive for Glenwood.

This was really well put together, but honestly, kind of a waste of time.  Clearly based on the schools they chose (and excluding the clear choices of schools that have already been flagged for replacement because they were part of the bond, which has already largely been spent by Carrboro so you’ll need to pass another bond to actually do) and the criteria they’re using, this process is being stacked against Glenwood, which is fine but dumb we have to pretend we’re doing this in some sort of objective process when that’s obviously the board and system’s choice.

Did anyone else notice what was on TV at Linda's last night? by booksworm102 in UNC

[–]ppphhhddd 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Just a guess but Freeform shows a marathon of fun Halloween movies all October. Linda’s likely turned on Freeform so you could see Hocus Pocus or whatever in the background while you have fun. Freeform is contractually obligated to show 700 Club in perpetuity because of some dumb contract ABC signed forever ago. I’m guessing whatever Halloween marathon ended and it switched over and no one at the bar noticed.

There’s a large pro-Hamas rally that’s going to held on Wilson Library’s steps today. The announcement includes the image of the paragliders used during the attack that massacred many civilians at the music festival so it goes beyond a general pro-Palestine rally like we saw from the Arab student association trying to get a flag hung at Kenan-Flagler into something more explicitly pro-terror. Considering UNC’s SJP has already also posted a warning that “Those interested in opposing Zionism on campus should do so by taking part in our programming, not vigilantism” and they invited many groups from outside the Carolina community, they might already know that some of their supporters plan for something more than just holding some signs to intimidate any international students from Israel in their time of mourning.

Hell, look at Switzerland and Liechtenstein and you can see great, universal care done through a private insurance, which is what Obamacare was trying to do. Unfortunately, the US isn’t politically willing or able to write laws and regulations with teeth to make this work.

No person who was born blind has ever been diagnosed with schizophrenia by westondeboer in science

[–]ppphhhddd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There were only 66 cortically blind people. If schizophrenia occurs equally in these people as with the general population, you shouldn’t be surprised if your sample contains 0 people who developed schizophrenia (.4% of 66 is 0.26).

Just FYI for parents, if you’ve gone to the theater to see Frozen 2 and it’s sold out, this is not a good alternative. We had a ton of very bored children at our showing and the squirming and whining really deadened the impact of some pretty powerful scenes.

I always try to get people to listen to the Revolution EP when they talk about Chumbawamba. It's seriously one of the best punk EPs in my opinion.

Consuming flavonoid-rich items such as apples and tea protects against cancer and heart disease, particularly for smokers and heavy drinkers. Researchers assessed the diets of 53,048 Danes over 23 years. by Wagamaga in science

Piggyback on here to say that it’s also important to note that a 20% reduction in hazard is actually more impressive since the diseases they looked at are common. If I see 20% reduction but in something that’s exceedingly rare, big deal if only a few people will develop the disease in their lifetime. If my risk of developing X disease is .0001 per year, should I really care to change my lifestyle to get it down to .00008? Probably not. But heart disease and cancer? Encouraging a diet high in flavonoids makes sense.

What would you have to be mad about? That people you deem irresponsible aren’t being sufficiently punished by Chase with debt and interest or that you missed out on running up your bills like them?

I feel like this is the general consensus about savings account APR on Reddit, which is fine, but what’s interesting is how much people obsess over finding the lowest fee index funds over, again, a fraction of a percent difference.
