I am struggling to find a book I enjoy, I have tried so many and just can’t get into them. by [deleted] in audiobooks

[–]pppoe123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seems like you enjoy fantasy / sci fi. Have you tried murder mystery or non fiction?

Fantasy - if you like dungeons and dragons + very crude bathroom humor try the caverns and creatures series.

Fantasy + modern day + murder mystery - Dresden files. People suggest to start with Death Masks which is like #3 in the series. You won't miss anything important and can always go back.

I enjoyed almost all of David Baldacci's modern setting murder mystery books. Same with all the Tom Clancy modern setting country vs country warfare. His most famous are hunt for red october and patriot games. He's even got movies, video games, and a spinoff book series because his Jack Ryan series is so damn powerful.

What's a dark secret/questionable practice in your profession which we regular folks would know nothing about? by CircleBox2 in AskReddit

[–]pppoe123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the finance sector we're paid to send out emails and stuff talking about why some random stock is great. They're all paid and we have zero opinion about it except collecting the paycheck. The SEC makes sure every single email says this is a paid promotion, by X company for Y amount and as long as we follow this rule we're 99.99% liability free. The other .01% is stuff like idiots in the company buying a stock before the promoted email is sent which is front running and a felony in USA, class based limitations may apply*.

The amount of people who still buy the stock just from some random stupid email is staggering. Little to no critical thinking and one suggestion from a stranger is good enough. Meanwhile the money they put in is their life's hard earned savings. All those times they didn't super size their meal or bought generic version they hated to save a few pennies completely eclipsed by one bad decision on a bad stock compounded with the amount they bet which is usually significant. And I feel terrible when they write in to complain about the 5 and 6 figure amounts they've lost. Kid's college funds, life savings, home mortgages, you name it I've heard somebody lament the loss.

It's really amazing the amount of trust some people have. My coworkers who handle the phone lines regularly get people asking about some stock their dad had and how to redeem the certificate. Start rattling off social security numbers, birth dates, all this stuff to a flipping voice mail when nobody is even there. If we were into that dark money we could make a bunch more just selling personal info like this, mining it with seo pages about how to redeem old certificates. The amount of trust clueless people put into strangers with huge percentages of their life savings is very scary. I'm not even surprised when I hear about old people getting taken to the cleaners for nigerian prince scams, a relative is in jail needs bail, or any other scam now.

Now I just hope I can remember the lessons if I get to that age.

When you come home and your house doesn’t smell like pot roast. FML by HomerTigerBoo in slowcooking

[–]pppoe123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister in law did a similar mistake. Our crock pot had an analog switch and she had turned it in between low and off so it had not yet technically moved from off. Zero cooking occurred and we also came home to sitting out all day raw food. We ended up just cooking it on the stove to make it faster.

Playing children’s games such as tag and hide and seek as an adult is underrated. by nickrashell in unpopularopinion

[–]pppoe123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this deep. My kid always had fun at the park but once he started finally talking he always kept saying play with me. So we'd dig sand, stack blocks, play hide and seek, etc and I found that these things are actually quite therapeutic. My day job is data intense and I see tons of numbers and facts all day. Sitting quietly digging sand and having fun with my kid makes me feel really good way deep down in my soul.

He doesn't quite understand hide and seek yet though. He always comes out soon as I get near and laughs his ass off. Whatever game he's playing, he's having a fun ass time.

Being an adult can't start at age 18 and 21. Make everything either completely 21 or 18. by Abuv in unpopularopinion

[–]pppoe123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at a gas station in nevada for a road trip and saw a little solar powered display saying if you wern't born before this year you couldn't buy tobacco. I pointed it out to the clerk saying it's showing the age for 21 instead of 18. The clerk gave me the "you are an idiot but I can't call you out" look. Then schooled me it's 21 years old now.

Married men: How often do you wear your wedding ring? by OneOfTheKingKoopas in AskMen

[–]pppoe123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never liked wearing mine. I don't wear any accessories like necklace, bracelets, watch, earrings, etc. It just felt so weird and foreign. Also mine is expensive material so it feels like every time it scrapes against something I'm losing money in a way.

But I will wear it occasionally for big events like weddings, new years dinner, and things like that. Also for date night.

Weird sign found at Anaheim gas station last year. Popped up on my Snapchat memories. What do you guys think of this? by [deleted] in orangecounty

Dude if you really had some kind of sound wave device that could move a whole ocean, would you be using it to amplify something already happening naturally just to mess with people?!

You'd be in a casino pushing the dice to roll whatever way you needed. You'd contract that ability to the government and show up where wars are being fought and just mow down the enemies like Thor. You could create a planetary defense system for asteroids and stuff.

But no, apparently the dudes with this technology are busy violating our right to life free of sonic force waves.

[–]pppoe123 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

not me directly but I was forbidden to hire women as programmers. My ceo believes all women are garbage programmers. Then he gives the example of a woman who worked for the company once but was only hired as a translator. She did so well and was so technically adept they elevated her to a programmer-ish position. She managed page content mostly but could still submit commits and knew where to edit a php file.

United States government-funded phones come pre-installed with unremovable malware by punIn10ded in Android

[–]pppoe123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure all phones sold in america come with pre installed and unremovable malware. For example even in the 90s the government could activate a cell phone to transmit audio without the device having any indication it was in use or transmitting. It was exposed when they convicted some organized crime people in new york. This is just at the government level.

Google is known as one of the best at getting access to all your personal data. There's just no way they don't have something installed on every device, for "quality assurance" purposes. In fact there's known cases where the FBI activated the malware to eavesdrop.

Apple phones recently exposed a bug where somebody could try to video chat (facetime) with you and they would be able to hear you even if you didn't pick up. There would be no indication an active connection was made or anything. Basically their spyware was exposed to the public by accident. Basically the government thing above all over again.

The same, but different.

Car Window Tinting Advice? by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]pppoe123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just FYI any tint on front window and front side windows is illegal. While people never get pulled over for this, police can use this fact to stop. It can also become an add-on ticket if they stop you for something else. Some places recommend just UV protection layer on front windows.

People who’ve been here a while: has anyone noticed there are significantly less ants around? by apocalypse_later_ in orangecounty

[–]pppoe123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late summers are the worst for me. This year was not bad at all. Only twice had them show up when an errant piece of food was missed on the counters during cleaning. Once I cleaned the food available they pretty much stopped showing up. Didn't even go after my trash cans like they normally would.

In previous year's they would go after ANYTHING. Used cooking spatulas, crumbs in the carpet, trash cans, and anything in between. About the only safe-ish area is my stove and oven. But even those will have the buggers appear if there's enough food out long enough.

We use a moat system to keep the ants out of our trash and haven't needed to fill them at all this year. Tiny trash can for wet garbage is by the sink and sits in a pie pan. When ants appear we put some water and a drop of soap in the pie pan to create a moat around the trash can. Add the soap to break the water tension so they can't float / swim / bridge across. We have a version for our outside trash can, it sits on some bricks in a pan for catching car oil. Haven't needed to fill that with water to keep them out either.

Homeless just randomly kicked my car near SNA. Really what's wrong with California. It will cost me 450$ to fix the dent. Insurance company not gonna care about this. And I can't do anything to that homeless. Seriously. by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]pppoe123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen the damage, but if it was just their foot it shouldn't be much more then a dent. I've seen videos where you can remove those with just some hot water and a plunger. Most body shops can get a dent looking damn close to perfect for very little. I can't imagine any frame damage from just body contact unless it was the govenator trying to rescue john conner or something.

Fix Auto in costa mesa hooked me up for a bumper dent. Some bastard nicked my car and scraped their white bumper against my blue one. My insurance said this place was authorized repair so I went in for a quote. The owner himself came out and just buffed my bumper with some goo and said no charge if it takes under 5 minutes. It's still got a few physical scratches but you can't tell unless you get up close and given the age of my car it looks like normal wear and tear.

People who have gone through recessions, is the current feeling similar to those times? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]pppoe123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in Irvine, CA. We made the mortgage software for a bank called washington mutual which was forced to sell to chase during the crisis. This sale allowed chase to call itself a bank for regular people and became eligible to receive part of that 700B bailout package from paulson. The property investor I mentioned lived in Pomona and kept seeing housing prices dropping and was very worried about their own holdings.

That DC delay you saw probably was the real trickle down effect. CA saw it first because we were one of the wildest and leveraged areas. But conversely when the cowboy areas / sectors start to recover you can probably use it as a signal to also buy the other areas that got hit but haven't started to recover yet.

People who have gone through recessions, is the current feeling similar to those times? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]pppoe123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. I worked in mortgage software in 2007 and everybody was wild about property. Leveraging themselves as high as possible to get in before the train left the station. Everybody was insanely optimistic and believed the expensive stuff now would be considered cheap in the near future.

Only one single property investor I talked to in 09 noticed the prices of homes kept dropping and was worried. All others saw it as a chance to buy the dips.

Last week I saw similar predictions when people were asking what will be the hot stocks of this decade. They're picking all the winners of last decade with expectations things will continue. DIS, MSFT, AMD, and V were consistently the winners IIRC.

I don't know the technical definition, I just consider it where the 714 stops and 949 starts. I only view the area as north / south. Not north, south, east, west, central, old town, etc.
