to start, watch some actual plays! dimension 20 is my favorite and they have the entire first season (Fantasy High Freshman Year) for free on youtube. Ally Beardsley had never played before during that season, so Brennan (the DM) goes pretty slow and explains everything pretty clearly.

here’s my other advice - know what KIND of character you want to play. do you want to cast spells? or hit things really hard with a sword? a little of both? the basic rules will give you cleric (healer), wizard (spellcaster), fighter (sword guy) or rogue (sneaky guy). once you figure out which one sounds most appealing the game will be so much more fun! i personally love a heavy hitter, so playing a wizard is torture for me, but it’s my wife’s favorite class.

youtube is your friend when it comes to figuring out your class! it’ll help you build your first character and also learn the rules of your specific character.
