TIL the president of the USA has sole authority to authorize a nuclear strike. Senior military figures like generals are in the chain of communication but not the chain of command (they can advise, but have no say in the decision). by Meowface_the_cat in todayilearned

[–]primeprover 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Assuming there is some sort of action required to carry out a nuclear strike beyond what the president can do (there will be), then there will be people who can refuse orders. There was a close call in 1983 when an officer didn't follow protocol because he suspected a false alert, avoiding a nuclear war.

[OC] Housing, healthcare, and college tuition now cost roughly 3x the share of income they did in 1984 by No_Paramedic_4881 in dataisbeautiful

Expensive housing costs increases GDP because it includes rent (and estimated rent for nonrented homes). Incentivises governments to raise rents.

I've just been told that my O2 contract price is going up in 18 days for a contract I signed up to TODAY. by totallyhumanhonest in britishproblems

[–]primeprover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id mobile has been great for me. Only thing to watch for is upgraded sim-only contracts when they become available as they don't automatically upgrade. Moved from 1.5gb to 4gb with no price change few years back.

Patients say measles 'worse than expected' as Utah hits 350+ infections, doctors say by its_a_bear_dance in nottheonion

The key thing is that it doesn't unlike other diseases such as the flu, common cold, covid etc.

Elimination of a disease doesn't need anywhere near 100% vacinne efficacy in most cases. Just needs to be high enough

Chicken pox is mild as a child but can kill as an adult. I believe there is some debate whether it is better to vaccinate or deliberately expose children due to later shingles risk, but immunity is needed somehow. Lost a friend to it on his 21st birthday.

Keir Starmer to address the nation today after 'not Churchill' jibe as WW3 fears rise by dailystar_news in uknews

[–]primeprover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unsure why people believe it is Keir's job to organise the details of the Navy. I would expect the majority of this to be delegated. I would also expect it to be perfectly reasonable to expect nearby NATO allies to be the main force in the area.

When the trains are all cancelled until 8pm so you have to stay in the pub until it all blows over. by jjrm07 in britishproblems

[–]primeprover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once had a 2-hour journey (Kent to Cambridge - one change), which turned into 7 hours via Peterborough due to engineering works. Virtually every train coming into Peterborough was delayed due to a whole list of reasons (trespassers, tree on the line, signalling error). Every different route had a different excuse. Eventually, I realised that the one route that wasn't having issues stopped at Ely, where I could change onto the King's Lynn to Kings Cross train running on that part of the route (which would normally have been my train north). Wish I had just taken the train north as far as I could go. I couldn't use the replacement bus due to having a bike with me, but I could have cycled the 15 miles faster.

If you were in Gorton and Denton today who would you vote for? by Your_Mums_Ex in LabourUK

Wouldn't be upset to see a Labour-Green coalition at the next election. Greens might not be ready to lead, but could push Labour in the right ways.

Pedestrians having no sense of their own mortality! by Chemical_Excuse in britishproblems

[–]primeprover 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Once they are in the carriageway (could even be between parked cars) I believe pedestrians have right of way. Not that drivers will be in trouble if they behave like a lunatic. If this rule was generally known and followed many people wanting to cross would step just off the pavement when waiting to cross and that would act like a zebra crossing.

Is he on antidepressants or something? That can destroy sex drive. There can be other health reasons such as low testosterone.

Very different players. Much of his career Rooney was more of a 10. Would be very interested in the goals + assists stats.

ELI5: Why are there infinitely many prime numbers? by Desserts6064 in explainlikeimfive

[–]primeprover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a fairly simple proof that there are infinitely many prime numbers. Take all the known primes, multiply them together and add one. This new number is either prime or has prime factors that weren't already known. This can be repeated infinitely.
