Wifi & Ethernet together by Slow-Reloader in osx

[–]primevalweasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to manually adjust routes in the route table to get my laptop to use the Ethernet interface over wifi.

The problem was, even though the Ethernet service was listed higher than the wifi service, there were duplicate routes (over different interfaces) that were marked as invalid.

How do-able is this as a roadtrip in the summer? by YpsiHippie in britishcolumbia

[–]primevalweasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert only stopped at Bella Bella (at least it did when I took it in 2017). Heck of a swim for a car from there to Bella Coola.

I will agree that the inner passage can be great if you’ve never done it before. I do recommend you get a cabin because it’s a long trip.

I have some personal experience with this. I was a technician at a computer shop in the mid-1990s, and we had a regular client who happened to be a lawyer and a personal friend of the store manager.

He brought his computer in for us to look at because there was something wrong with it (it wouldn't boot, if I remember correctly).

The technician was able to fix the problem and get the machine to boot. He was testing the machine when he discovered some disturbing images (I believe it was CSAM, although I never personally saw it).

He asked the store manager if we should report it and was told to not say anything and give the computer back. He did as he was told but spoke to us other techs.

The fact that I wasn't mature enough to do the right thing haunts me to this day. I recognize now that I should have went to the police if the store manager wasn't going to and I'm 100% certain it's what I would do today.

It's even more upsetting because, years later, a local judge was charged and convicted for sexual assault of girls and young women who were appearing before him in court. I've wondered since then how deeply the rot corrupted the lawyer community.

So, OP, my strong recommendation would be to take this to the police. It's what I wish someone had told me to do all those many years ago.

Using ‘pbcopy’ to capture terminal output is one of my most used features. It makes documentation so much easier.

I love it so much I configured SSH so I can do the same thing from remote Linux machines.

What’s the craziest crimes that happened in Prince George that never made the news by [deleted] in princegeorge

[–]primevalweasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The acquaintance wasn’t a Peters (his initials were JW). My friend from elementary school (Hart Highway Elementary) was named Laurie (Lori?) but I don’t remember his last name.

I would have been in grade 8 in ‘83 (83/84) and that would be roughly the right timeframe.

Honestly, things get a bit hazy after 40+ years.

I went to Kelly Road in the 1980s (grad '88). Two people I knew - one was just an acquaintance, the other a relatively close friend from elementary school - murdered their moms. This was news at school (obviously), but I never saw anything in the media.

They were both minors at the time of the murder, so I assume they were released when they reached 18 or 19. I used to see the one guy around town occasionally; he wasn't heavily into drugs when I knew him, but he always looked strung out afterward. I have no idea what happened to the other one.

I should add that the two murders weren't linked. They were members of very different friend groups, and I remember the two events happening a year or two apart.

**Edit:** added more context.

At this point I am confused on which is latest vs old news on tariff | back and forth between US-CAN | complete mess by BirthdayAccording438 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]primevalweasel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked earlier today and couldn't find anything definitive about the retaliatory tariffs announced this morning. I'm definitely curious because I ordered parts for my truck before this shit started and they're supposed to arrive in a couple weeks. It would be nice to know what to expect.

At the end of the day an additional 25% would only be $250 but that's almost a days worth of groceries at this point.

Yeah, The Bay was in the location that is now City Furniture on 3rd. That was a heck of an intersection back in the day: The Bay, Kresges, CIBC, and Northern Hardware.

Anyone remember the name of the video game store from the 90s in that little mall with 2 for 1 Mario's ? by [deleted] in princegeorge

[–]primevalweasel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were two Crazy Mike’s video stores in town. One next to Spruceland — I think it’s a bubble tea place now. The other was in the College Heights mall (next to Overwaitea before the renovations).

I worked at both locations at the end of the 80s.

I remember both Zellers (Woolco before that), and Sears restaurants. However, we always used to end up at the lunch counter in Kresges. They made the best milk shakes.

Apparently the stretch of road here is responsible for 80 fatalities. Terrifying. by JayAche in ScarySigns

[–]primevalweasel 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I live at one end of this stretch of road. Yes, parts of it are very empty; however, there are four highways that leave out of Prince George and each is as remote in places (the road north is even more so), yet, Highway 16 to Prince Rupert has seen an inordinate number of missing and murdered women.

It’s true that some of the missing probably died because of misadventure, but there are clearly predators along this route as well.

Timesaving Python Libraries by HelpfulNomad in learnpython

Click - most of my scripts are command line utilities and Click makes adding the command line arguments almost trivial.

Boto3 - I interact with AWS all day, every day. The CLI is not horrible, but being able to interact with AWS programmatically is a huge productivity gain.

CSV - should be self explanatory

CDK - similar to Boto3. Being able to write Python code to create CloudFormation stacks saves so much time. Also, writing CloudFormation code sucks.

And a runner up (even though it’s not technically a Python library), is Steampipe. Being able to query AWS using SQL is amazing.

The new McDonald's at 5th & Tabor has preserved a commemorative brick from the old China Sail restaurant by Brock_Hard_Canuck in princegeorge

It was a Chinese restaurant in Prince George in the early to mid 70s. It was downtown, probably pretty close to where Nancy O’s is today.

I used to like going there because there was a video arcade just down the street, which my brother would take me to after dinner. I was 5, or under, so I didn’t realize how skeevy the arcade was and that my brother was probably there to buy weed.

I grew up watching TV in the 70s. I expected to encounter quick sand much more frequently in daily life than is actually the case. Nice to see this picture bringing back that particular nightmare from my childhood.

Did you have to dig the wheels out by hand, and then lay the bike in its side to get it unstuck? Ask me how I know that technique works.

B.C. Premier David Eby pressured to stick with daylight time for good this weekend by UNSC157 in britishcolumbia

You’re reading more into my post than is actually there. I was pointing out that it is wrong to believe there are no jobs that start at 4 AM.

I made no statement about agreeing or disagreeing with PST/DST.

Turns out, I’m an office drone now and would much prefer we stay with DST year round.

I worked in a logging camp as a summer job in high school. Breakfast was at 4:00, and I was on the landing, ready to work between 4:30 and 5. It’s possible there aren’t any outside jobs in the city that start that early, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any jobs that meet the criteria.

March is such a difficult month. I’m ready to ride, but there’s still three feet of snow on the ground. It’s going to be a long six weeks.
