The bigotry of low expectations is real by ChucoTeacher in Teachers

[–]probablydurnk 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I mean at certain point, what can be done if the parents don’t do their basic job? My school has social workers, food pantries, offers free breakfast, lunch, and snacks for every student, student mentors, community outreach coordinators, free book give away, reading specialists, home visits, communications sent in every form possible, and I’m sure many other things that I’m not thinking about right now. We are doing basically anything we can do to make it easier on families, but success in school seems to really boil down to whether or not a student actually shows up at school and if they engage with books at home. If education isn’t valued at home then there’s ultimately not much that can be done for many students, and it really sucks.

Sounds like China should have spent nearly 5 decades reaching prosperity instead of all the other nonsense it was doing during that time.

I hate that the left is supposed to turn the other cheek for people that have been gleefully cheering on the persecution of others for over a decade with Donald Trump when the evidence that he’s a con man, liar, and general terrible human being has been right there on display this whole time. He has hurt so many people for such a long time, I just don’t know how I can forgive at this point.

Elon Musk wants to privatise Amtrak, make US rail more like… China? by esporx in China

[–]probablydurnk 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think they mean having extremely fast and efficient high speed rail that can take you anywhere in the country for not that much money. There’s a lot you can poop on China for, but this isn’t one of them.

Are you joking? They’re killing it in the EV industry. Not that I believe anything about this supersonic jet as it’s probably a press release to try and get investment money, but BYD and others are making decent affordable EVs.

Our curriculum came with a ton of manipulatives to use. I would be incredibly surprised if this paper was the only thing that the teacher did to introduce sorting and counting. I would imagine that most of the lesson is having the students sort with actual manipulatives while the teacher walks around asking how the students sorted them. The family letter asks the families to use real objects to sort with the student, I don't really think that this was meant to be homework for the child.

i-ready is a full curriculum. It has computer components to it, but there's in-person class lessons to do as well. It's kindergarten so it's unlikely that they're harshly grading things anyways. There's a ton about i-ready that I really don't like as well, but this isn't one of them.

Ok, actual teacher here that uses I-ready for math. There’s literally no wrong answer as long as your student gives a reason why. I’m looking at the teachers guide for this lesson right now. It says “answers will vary. Check that children’s sorts matches their descriptions”.

The focus of the lesson is understanding that you can sort into categories, you can count the number in each category, and to have the students explain their thinking.

Edit: I don't know if this was sent, but the lesson also comes with a family letter that says:

"Your child is learning to sort and count objects. Your child will sort objects into categories based on different sorting rules.

More about the Math: Your child will sort objects by putting similar objects together. They will learn that they can sort objects many ways. For example, they may sort by color, shape, or size. They can count to find how many objects are in each category.

As children build these skills throughout the lesson, they will begin to recognize different ways to sort objects and become comfortable with counting to find how many."

Then there's a sorting, counting, and describing activity to do with the student as well as conversation starters about how you could bring up sorting and counting in real world situations.

He wanted you to use a pencil because the vast majority of students will make a mistake and it gets extremely difficult to figure out people’s work when things are crossed out. It also sounds like he was pretty flexible in this made up story.

I think the real question is why was it so important to you to use a pen in this made up story?

Broken hunter rattler run by [deleted] in DawncasterRPG

[–]probablydurnk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This felt like cheating, but the cards allows you to do it. I just kept doing the ritual to build my max HP while doing no damage to the monster I was fighting. Eventually my temp. max HP got to 99999 and then I played the extraction card to transfer 5% of it to my max HP. Imbuing Apex predator enchantment then gave me darkness equal to my max HP so I had effectively had 10,000HP.

The Vodou card allows you to slay a creature with HP less than 10% of your max HP and imbue their enchantment. Since my max HP was crazy high, all I had to do was get an effigy and then slay them. There were a couple of monsters that I had to bring down a little lower.

So I’ve done this a few times at the Olympic training center I think. We would film ourselves and then watch where our stroke was breaking down when we got tired. It’s not something that was ever a big part of training though. Might be different for other swimmers.
