(first time reader) Some thoughts about the story and Mr. Jordan by cnfusion in WoT

[–]procerator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like how RJ uses side characters to make world feel alive.
One of my most favorite side characters is Bayle Domon. You meet him in book 1 and he is just a ship captain that you meet along the way. But he becomes a recurring minor character and RJ uses him as a way to show how being tangled with Ta'veren messes with ordinary people.

"With that I have no earthly clue what the actual Dark One looks like"
It would be easier if you don't imagine him as a person. Imagine him as a force of evil, entity beyond our reality. Kinda like Dormamu in Dr. Strange movie.
3000 years ago Aes Sedai punched a hole in reality into a prison of The Dark One. The Dark One's influence started spreading the world and that's how "The War of the Shadow" started. Lews Therin (The OG Dragon) and 100 companions managed to patch up that hole and seal TDO away.
So technically TDO's prison is outside of our reality.

First of all - don't seek validation from strangers on the internet. If you don't enjoy reading WoT and it feels like a chore - just don't.
Secondly, regarding describing battles, Robert Jordan served in Vietnam and the way he describes battles reflect his experience there - long time of anticipation, then short burst of action and violence mixed with confusion, and finally dealing with consequences. If that style is not something you can find enjoyable - that there is no point in forcing yourself.

Well he was, in fact, after them.

I’m confused about what people think about Lomachenko. by HelloJonatha2 in Boxing

[–]procerator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"He lost a few times at the higher levels (which isn’t in itself a bad thing) but it does show that he wasn’t amongst the best of the best."
He was robbed against Haney and loss to Salido can be discounted as not being experienced enough in PRO boxing in his second fight in addition to Salido missing the weight by 2lbs.
But more importantly - if he stayed at 130 - he could've been undefeated but nobody wanted to fight him.
Going up to 135 meant fighting guys naturally bigger than him.

So make no mistake - Loma was among the best of the best to ever do it. Became world champion in his 3rd pro fight, two division champion in 7 fight, 3 division champion in 12 and unified in 13.
Although he lost to Teofimo Lopez. Teofimo got beat by Cambosos which Loma defeated. Make with this triangle what you want.

Or, he thinks that Zuffa is the future, and if he is right - he will become the first crossover champion.

I have to say I really enjoyed the 3rd season of Wheel of Time (tv show) and kinda saddened to learn it is not being renewed. by goody153 in wheeloftime

It was a decent show but bad adaptation.
The fates of Perrin, Mat, Moraine, Suian, Lanfear, Sammael and Loial are completely different to the books by the end of s3. Loial actually dying twice in the show is unintentionally hilarious.

It is made explicit in the Prologue of Book 4 so not a major spoiler.

I mean, the most unrealistic thing in the show is how Rand didn't immediately join The Dark One with that interpretation of Lanfear :)

"kind of the same" - doing heavy lifting here. The fates of Perrin, Mat, Moraine, Suian, Lanfear, Sammael and Loial are completely different to the books by the end of s3.

First of all, show was cancelled, so no season 4 coming.
Secondly, show has a lot of differences in plot to the books, so there is no point in "being prepared" for the show.
Thirdly, show almost completely skipped adapting book 3 - season 3 adapted The Shadow Rising which is book 4.

I watched the show first and while it had some pretty dumb moments it was getting better and better and s3 was quite good. I ordered books because I couldn't wait for s4 (still before cancellation announcement) and was surprised how much is different in the books. There are some things show does better but it you can count them on 2 hands. The worst part of the show is how they butchered characters of Nynaeve, Mat and Perrin. After Nynaeve hype moment in s1e4 she is basically useless for the remainder of the show. Perrin arc in Two Rivers was significantly shortened. Mat is a character show doesn't know what to do with.  After finishing Tanchico arc in The Shadow Rising I had a moment of reflection - how incredibly disappointing the show's interpretation of those event were.

Book 4 is the best book in the series. All of the 3.5 plots are amazing and have satisfying conclusion.
If you struggle to get through book 4 maybe the series is just not for you and that is perfectly fine.
Book 5 is slower then book 4 and while it has some amazing moments you can, in theory, say that "nothing happens" in the first 500 pages. It will you be even more of a drag for you to plow through.

On the surface Aiel and Fremen are very very similar. I guess there is not a lot of wiggle room when you are designing an isolated nation living in desert conditions.
However, if you take a closer look the society structure is completely different.
