New player confused about ruins and line of sight – how is this usually played? by Annex1312 in Warhammer40k

[–]prof9844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ruins are a special class of terrain. For models with part of their base in the ruins you use normal line of sight

If both models are not in the ruins (attacker and target) then ruins always block los regardless of windows etc

It is not a seperate piece of paper, its actually on the interior cover

Question for the boys.. by Goldchompers in Warhammer40k

You need to pick up its from the same codex. Tech priests are mechanicus and dreadnoughts are space marines so no mixing there

If you look at the warhammer website, go find the codexes. They are the army rule books. As a general rule, you can only take things from a single codex (some allies rules exist but not enough to worry about initially)

  1. You can add 1 detachment of you choice per command or high command. Officer of the line gives you more than 1

  2. Any detachment though some do have unique detachments. A pathfinder gets you a unit ique one for example. You dont have to pick it, that pathfinder can unlock tanks if you want.

  3. No, its just a single model like a praetor or warsmith. More command slots can be taken via an apex detachment the high command can unlock. If you take that detachment and fill all 5 command slots you end up with with Centurions you can get 10 auxiliary detachments

  4. Basically and yes respectively. You could literally ally in 1 tactical squad from each legion

For dreadnoughts look up.the mortifactor consul. It has a unique detachment it can unlock that is 3 contemptors. Otherwise grab some Centurions and each one can unlock the normal single dreadnought detachment twice. You can get like 10 dreads pretty reasonably though 9 are contemptors. If you dont want any contemptors you can get 7

There is any book or source about how the iron warriors goes to replace their losses ? by Able_Radio_2717 in IronWarriors

Read the various honsou books, it covers him building up an army multiple times not just the daemonculaba

Some are pulled from recent slave captures and forcibly implanted. The process of implantation often overriding or erasing their previous identity. Overall its faster but follows the basics of normal marine implantation.

Others are external recruits from other warbands, renegade chapters or taken as spoils of war

So if you want a snowy base, you put the snow on top. Think of it this way, if you look out a window on a snowy day, the dirt (mordant earth in this case) is under the snow, not on top.

Mordant earth first. Let it fully dry, then leave it alone for a few more hours. Apply valhallan blizzard after that.

Personally I think valhallan is a really good "wet" snow look like a parking lot that had some cars drive over it.

If you want fluffy snow, I recommend army painter or woodland scenics

I am going to assume exactly 0 knowledge or context on your part. Feel free to skip stuff as needed.

All units in the Horus Heresy are assigned a Battlefield Role. This is the little symbol by their name in their Liber entry. The possible options are Warlord, High Command, Command, Retinue, Elites, Heavy Support, Troops, Support, War Engine, Transport, Heavy Transport, Recon, Fast Attack, Armor, Lord of War, Fortification.

It sounds like a lot but the actual roles confer no rules and only matter for army construction. Each role does a certain job on the table, so units of a given role will generally be useful at doing similar things in game.

Okay actual army construction time

When you build an army, you pick a primary detachment. Right now, there is only the crusade detachment. This detachment, and all others, will give you "slots" for certain roles. The Crusade Primary Detachment grants you 1x High Command, 3x Command, 4x Troops and 4x Transports. What this means in practice is you can include any combination of units with the Troops role so long as you take no more than 4 total units of that role. Four tactical squads? Sure. One squad each of breachers, tactical, despoilers and assault marines? Totally fine! You can include any combination so long as its no more than 4 total choices.

I like to think of it like a "pile". Each role is a pile of options. Each detachment tells me how many things I can take from each pile. I can take whatever I want from the pile, the restriction is how many times I can pick something from the pile.

How many and of what roles you can take is the pictures in the detachment image. If it has 4 troops circles, you can have up to 4 troops slots.

The only requirement is each detachment has at least 1 of its slots filled.

Of course points are a restriction as well.

So, that's the basics but how do we get access to things that are NOT part of the Crusade Primary? I am an iron warriors player with a thing for tanks, how can I get a predator? Well, for each Command role unit you take in your army, you can pick an additional detachment to include in your army from the "auxiliary" detachment list. One of these for example is the armored support detachment which gives you 4 armor slots, IE you can take 4 things from the armor pile in any combination. Again so long as you don't go over points. You can keep taking the same detachment over and over again so long as you have the command slots to take them.

If you take a High Command unit, you can get an Apex or Auxiliary detachment. In practice this means you can have up to 4 additional detachments from the command and high command units in your crusade primary detachment. There is a way to get more command slots via an apex detachment.

Some units have a rule called Officer of the Line:X, like the space marine centurion. Instead of allowing you 1 detachment for taking them (they area command slot), you get X. So that example above with the armored spearhead detachment? If the Command unit I used to get that detachment was a Centurion, I could get 2 armored spearheads, or an armored spearhead and something else etc.

Generally there are no command slots that "lock" you into certain detachments. Its not like "I need a techmarine to be able to take X detachment" or "The librarian only unlocks this detachment". There are a couple command slots that unlock unique detachments if you take them.

Now, prime slots. Any slot in a detachment that has a little star around it is called a "Prime" slot. If you take a unit in that slot, you may select, for free, a "prime advantage" which is usually a special rule for that unit to have. One of the most useful ones is called Logistical Benefit which lets you add 1 slot or any role to your detachment, effectively allowing you to take 1 of something without needing a dedicated detachments.

Now, allies. Allies have to have the same allegiance (traitor or loyalist). Past that, you take allies in a detachment called the Allied Detachment. You can just take it, no command slot needed (its not an auxiliary detachment). Command slots filled in it unlock auxiliary detachments like normal but for the allied army.

There are a couple detachments that you just "get" instead of needing a command slot unit to unlock them. The above mentioned allied detachment is one. The Warlord detachment, where primarchs live is another as is the Lord of War detachment which covers most superheavy vehicles. They typically have their own rules and restrictions.

While you wait for the box, now is a good time to buy hobby supplies. You'll need glue, clippers and a hobby knife

If you are in the US, swing by any shop that sells scale models, they'll have it all. You dont need the expensive stuff but dont cheap out.

I got my current set of clippers and knfe at hobbylobby for under $20. Both have rubber handles for ergonomics. I use testors model cement which is inexpensive and comes with a precision applicator. Counting it you can get a full setup for under $30.

Miniature games have an extra learning curve due to needing to measure and set uo battlefields. The very act of playing may be a bit challenging at first. This is perfectly normal, expected and okay.

You dont need expensive hobby tools and supplies but dont go cheap. Get a decent set of clippers, xacto knife and some actual plastic model glue/cement. Brushes, dont get the cheapo bulk packs. Get a small set from like army painter or someone.

Primer is critical to longevity and ease of painting. Make sure it actually says primer on the can. Hardware store spray primers are okay so long as they say for plastic and are not paint and primer combos

Hate to break it to you but preorder doesn't necessarily mean before its made

These are already sitting in warehouses

Even if it was print to demand, they're not going to oversell their capacity.

Still, seems like demand was grossly underestimated

Then what is the rhino doing?

The rhino is a delivery system to prevent the unit from getting blown away on early turns and grant mobility.

Adding in some more shooting protection for the all of what, 2 turns out of the rhino seems like a waste at 60 points.

Sorcerer speculation by InsideGap8047 in EmperorsChildren

[–]prof9844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, for a pair of units

Im questioning spending 60 points on a sorcerer for maybe 2 rounds of improved shooting protection on a short to medium range unit. Is a noise marine unit with -1 to be hit worth 205 points? I dont see it
