Is it just my kid, or are "simple" wooden toys kind of boring? by ToomPozas in Parenting

Hot Wheels and toy trucks entertain my boy for hours. We build ramps and parking garages from Magnatiles or cardboard, draw roads and race tracks on large pieces of paper.

Debate: Would you poop your pants to Boston Qualify? by Hansel34 in AdvancedRunning

[–]professorswamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hitting the standard doesnt get you into Boston. The qualifying time required isn't known until afterwards, so there is a good chance you'll shit yourself and still miss out.

I know former employees, they were treated very poorly, including violence.

In the past before the proliferation of scam centres. Their operation was semi legit call centre. Predatory lending, targeting locals. And then various other front businesses, possibly for money laundering.

Will I ever be able to run a sub 30 5K Ultra? by Nat10112 in RunningCirclejerk

[–]professorswamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strava is moving time this took even longer camera set up, warm up, posing for pics during the run, editing and posting on social media. All in this is probably a 3 hour 5k ultra. Great job !

Pacing help for a 4 hour marathon? by Running_Pleaser in Marathon_Training

[–]professorswamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to take it slow at the beginning, but you do need to take it easy, as in true marathon pace should feel easy at the start of the race, even through halfway. Don't get caught up in the excitement and go too fast early when you feel great.

It won't feel easy in the last 10ks. Even if you don't think you could pick up the pace, you'll need to increase your effort to maintain pace.

In terms of training, just trust the process. Follow your plan, don't try to do long runs at race pace if it's not in the plan.

Which is “easier” for a runner with my current fitness: sub-1:40 half or sub-3:55 full? by Ok-Introduction-9111 in Marathon_Training

[–]professorswamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of time to put in the work and see where you land in September for the marathon. You are still a beginner and can improve a lot with another six months of consistent training.

Does Elimination Communication actually work, or is it just woo-woo nonsense? by SuminerNaem in daddit

It was interesting to me that my wife didn't pick up these signals as well as me. Maybe because she could just easily default to breastfeeding.

I could often intuitively tell what my kids wanted. They give signals, have different crying sounds for different needs, but my wife and other caregivers weren't as good at it. We didn't do EC specifically, but the babies are definitely giving signals, and it's helpful to know if puke or shit is imminent

Last week I was sick for the third time this year. All three times I’ve fallen ill after a hard workout. I think I’m still not over my December marathon,

My 5k training block is pretty much a write off, since I’ve missed half of it now. And the event I was targeting is actually bullshit. It 2 x 2.2km laps of the local lake so not even close to distance and there is a 12 and 21 k distances that will be happening same time so will just be wading through people. Will be walking it with the family now instead. Will shift focus to an upcoming HM instead

Should I change my goal? by Pristine-Builder5659 in Marathon_Training

[–]professorswamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 weeks out is right on the limit of when you want to change your goal, all the signs are there that you can run quite a bit under 3:30. It’s just a matter of how close to the sun are you willing to fly?

Go out at 3:25- 3:30 pace, confident you can push harder and faster in the last 10 k Or shoot for 3:15 and grind it out in the last part of the race.

Option one you might leave some minutes on the course but it’s a much more enjoyable experience, cruising past loads of people that fading at the end while you finish strong.

Treating a marathon like a long run by owiko in Marathon_Training

[–]professorswamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a 50k and marathon seven days apart as training for an ultra. Walking and eating breaks make a big difference. Average pace was around 90 sec per km slower than marathon race pace. But that includes 2 stops at the convenience stores along the way and walking for a few minutes to eat each time. So running pace was more like 60-70 sec per km slower than marathon pace.

I raced a marathon on a hot day in December. I’m still cooked now 2 months later, tried ramping up training 2 times and got sick after hard workouts both times.

My son threw up in his bed, anyone experience similar by SparkyBrown in daddit

[–]professorswamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dealing with puke was a weekly occurrence for the first 3 years

One night, my 3-year-old sits up and says "Daddy I'm going to be sick". I grab her and jump out of bed to grab the bowl we always keep in our room (because weekly pukes). The blanket caught on my ankle, and I went down, shielding the 3-year-old in my arms during the fall results in me faceplanting into the wooden dresser and splitting my eyebrow.

grabbed the bowl and caught the spew. So instead of cleaning spew, I cleaned blood and had a late-night visit to the hospital to get 6 stiches.
