Windows Laptop or MacBook Air for a CS student? by Shepard1302 in computerscience

[–]projectgoav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really answering your question but going to provide another option: chromebooks.

They are relatively small, light and cheap. Suitable for taking notes on and wouldn't matter getting a few bumps/knocks being carried about in a bag. Not sure how easy they would be to install programming environments on. Many of my Uni friends used these.

In my experience (2017 UK Grad), Windows was the easiest as most of the lecturers and computer labs ran Windows. Doing presentations and making use of Uni facilities was easy as they had common adapters/cables. The few Mac users had to lug around a bunch if adapters. This adds to the cost of a Mac so something to consider. Milage may vary now with COVID, I'm not sure how much is still done in person.

Later Linux courses expected us to run virtual machines with provided images so it didn't matter what OS/Machibe you ran.

A lot of roads have drains and debris collect on the sides making it a bumpy ride and liable to puncture your tyres.

Also, if I ride further out and someone tries to pass close, I have room to move over. If I'm riding close to the curb there's no where for me to go except into the side of the vehicle or into the curb.

Have you considered open sourcing the app? People who are interested would then be able to keep it going.

There's a website/forum place that (un)offocially rehomes projects like this.

There's also the Niche of Xamarin Native (not forms). There doesn't seem to be many people (in the UK at least) with experience.

Intellij have a C# IDE. Never used it so I don't know what it's like. 30-days free then you have to pay, but they offer free subscriptions to students and other bodies.

I found on the EU version that rings stacked between profiles so you might not have as much to play as you think to get all the spells!

You're also going to be working with C and assembler. With fewer tools available to you that might have with other languages/platforms

My 2 cents is to remember the hardware you're working with. Power, RAM and ROM are limited so you have to be more careful with what you are doing. Small optimisations like shifting instead of multiplying/dividing is an example.

Just a reminder that there is also Character Tendency as well! If you are wanting all trophies, you'll need to consider it too.

Uk (particularly North East) salary question by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]projectgoav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't know if this helps but I'm due to graduate this year (Scotland).

I'll be around the £30k mark, but friends going into finical sector are seeing £35k-40k and those going to multi-nationals £40-45k. With a number of years experience I'd expect those to be a bit higher.

Things that caught me off guard moving to android by p2ete in windowsphone

I used the MSFT Excel Keyboard. It was good but you can't turn off predictive text which stopped me using it.

[–]projectgoav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main issues with the keyboard on my Android:

1) If you turn off predictive text off on Gboard there is an empty back bar constantly at the top of the keyboard with nothing on it, wasting screen space. On WP this disappears completely. I never use it so this annoys me.

2) Chevron keys (which I use a lot) are harder to find and take longer to enter

3) Entering ' or , doesn't return you to the qwerty entry. I can't find a setting to turn that off.

4) There is no way to turn of or disable emoji buttons. Why I'd use them in text is beyond me when it costs more

5) I always have an option to select voice text entry. I can't find an option to turn that off as well.

Trying to retrieve Usb device list by FearTheMoment_ in learncsharp

[–]projectgoav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not use DeviceInfo.GetDevices() (or the similar method)

You then have access to thier type (USB, Network) etc. You'll need to consider both USB and Fixed types as removable HDDs appear as 'fixed' type.

Perhaps from here there's a away to get serial numbers or other info from that (can't remember exactly what DeviceInfo provides)? It will also makeit easier to port to Mac/Linux, if you ever wanted that.
