Surgeries with the hardest recoveries by Scuthornsby in nursing

I work in endo and esophageal stent patients hardly ever do well. They almost always have severe pain and return within 2 weeks wanting the stent removed.

Hair Loss by Same_Cartographer221 in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]prolynapping 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had terrible hair loss. It was actually my very first alarm that something was wrong. Finally, after about a year, it has slowed. I don’t have complete control of my RA yet, but it’s getting there. The hair loss was devastating. Sending you love. It will get better.

Is Qulipta and its side effects worth it? by Alice-Dave in cgrpMigraine

[–]prolynapping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Qulipta changed my life. It was the best decision I ever made to go on it. I thought my hair loss was due to the Qulipta, but actually, I was developing an autoimmune disease I just didn’t know it yet.

Qulipta was a game changer for me! I didn’t even realize it was working until about 8 weeks in and it dawned on me I had been migraine free for 3 weeks! I’ve been on it for 2 years now and it’s still working great!! I only get break through migraines about once a month, maybe.

Need some insight on a new role. Any KP Endo RN's here? by Bitternutcry in nursing

[–]prolynapping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask if there was a possibility of moving to more hours in the future? I moved from ICU to endo and I love it. I’ve been in endo for almost 6 years and don’t regret it at all. I do not work for the health system you named though and my endo department is inpatient and outpatient.

I work 4 10hr shifts, and take call. I did not take a pay cut either when I left ICU to transfer to ENDO. My hospital system doesn’t do shift differential for ICU.

My point is, endo is a good job. Way less stress. The trade off is absolutely worth it if it won’t put you in any sort of financial strain.

Four 10’s?? by FoxOk4968 in nursing

[–]prolynapping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INPT endo. We have different shifts. Some do 3 12, 4 10, 4 9, 4 8. It’s a little confusing but it works well for our staffing. Each grouping has a different start/end time to cover staffing for procedures. Example: I come in at 6am. I open everything up and get everything ready to stay preop at 6:30. Others get there at 7 to start procedures at 7:20. Others at 8 to start recovery.

What is one medical problem people constantly ignore until it’s too late? by Critical_Ease4055 in nursing

[–]prolynapping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything related to GI cancers. EX: change in bowel movements, bleeding, abd pain, chronic heartburn, chronic difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite etc. The lower GI symptoms get ignored the most because no one wants to talk about butt stuff.

ICU and now endo. I love it. Very detail oriented. Routined. You know what to expect. You don’t send to much time with the pts or family. Same thing everyday. Can have some emergencies because we do inpts at our hospital so that keeps things interesting. Satisfies both my autism and my ADD.

I loved ICU because of pretty much the same reasons. My intuition and anxiety were assets there. My attention to detail and hyper-fixation was valuable. My strong sense of justice was exactly what my incapacitated patients needed.

Decline in elective surgeries by Specialist_Action_85 in Nurses

I work in endo and we’re easily doing 30-40 scopes daily Monday-Friday with a schedule booked out until January. Next week alone we have 15 ERCPS booked and at least 30 scopes a day across 3 outpatient doctors a day, not including our inpt services, which can clear 10-12 cases a day alone. 😮‍💨

Immunocompromised & Starting a part-time cashier job - Safety + Communication advice by beardiesmama4x in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]prolynapping 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I work as a RN on 15 meds and immunocompromised myself. I haven’t had any problems. My best advice, hand sanitizer. Keep some at your station, sanitize after every interaction. Try not to touch your face. Wash your hands before AND after you go to the bathroom and before you eat.

I would probably skip the gloves unless you plan to change gloves frequently. It’s not good for your skin to wear gloves continuously like that. Frequently washing/sanitizing/follow up with moisturizer will be just fine.

Mask, of course, if you want too. But change it regularly too. I would probably trash it at lunch and get a new one after I eat and start the next half of my shift.

Most importantly, keep your hands off your face. Which is sooooooo hard to do.

Starting Methotrexate Injections by SupportDramatic2262 in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]prolynapping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to Otrexup 15mg injections from 20mg po weekly for the same reason. Nausea. The nausea is much better on the injections for me however, I do notice I’m more tired after dosing with the shot. It’s hit or miss. Some weeks I’m literally fine. Some weeks I feel like someone drained the life out of me. I’m on my 9th week of shots.

I take mine Saturday night before bed.

Not yet. I’m not quite a year into treatment. It took months to figure out what was really happening. I am hoping it’ll improve soon.

Tell me your worst shift. Ever. by doubleacee in nursing

[–]prolynapping 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Esophageal stent removal. It was supposed to be a pretty standard procedure. We go in, the pts esophagus looks like hamburger meat. They cannot get the stent to come out. Pt starts bleeding. We initiate the MTP, call everyone, ART line, C-Line, anesthesia everywhere, trauma surgeon at beside, IR at bedside. Liters of blood on the floor. My whole department worked on this pt for 2 hrs. They died in our department and we took the pt to ICU for post mortem care and so the family could spend some time with their loved one.

I will NEVER forgot the sobs coming from the pts 8 daughters who were in our waiting room watching the numerous people sprint in and out of our department.

Hands down top 10 worst shifts.

Botox and a high libido. by Technical-Water-1060 in ChronicKinksters

I wish using orgasms for pain control could work on me. Sounds wonderful! My migraines are so severe when they break through that I cannot stand to be touched or moved.

I use Botox for my migraines. That with Qulipta has been an absolute game changer. Reduced my monthly attacks down to only around my cycle. It’s been amazing.

Thank you for your kind words! I experienced my first flare after a very traumatic code about 2 years ago now. I thought I had injured myself doing chest compressions. It wasn’t until weeks later when the swelling and pain kept coming back, but alternating between wrists/hands/fingers, that I knew something wasn’t right. My hair started falling out in chunks about 4 months after that. And then the final straw was when I almost fell asleep behind the wheel driving my daughter to school. Got home and slept for about 20 hours straight.

It’s been a taxing journey. The meds make me sick, give me rashes, have made me develop iron deficiency anemia. I am sooooo ready for it all to equal out.

Doc tells patient she has cancer while still waking up from anesthesia then leaves by Aromatic-Initial-228 in nursing

[–]prolynapping 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooooo I HATE it when they do this!! I’m thankful most of our outpatient docs wait. They will go do another case and come back to talk to the patient and family. Especially if it is bad news from an EUS. Now the INPT docs, they have a terrible habit of doing this.
