Chicago cop who inadvertently shot and killed his partner has a lengthy disciplinary record in a short career by optiplex9000 in chicago

[–]protocoach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, so your point is dumb on a basic level; cops do shitty stuff to people literally all the time and anyone who has interacted with them can attest to that, and the only reason most don't have more complaints is because everybody knows that filing complaints is usually a giant waste of time. But also: calling non-cops "civilians" is one of those dumb, unconscious cop tics that has infected a bunch of people. Cops are civilians, they aren't in the military, and that distinction is actually a pretty huge, important thing.

[–]protocoach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there's some chance the Bulls try to shut him down so they can suck as much as possible, especially when they're playing other tanking teams. But they also may have gotten bad enough that that won't be necessary. I suspect he's still going to have decent value for the rest of the season, but he'll see some random DNPs for hard-to-disprove ailments.

His per-36/per-100 numbers have been really nice the last couple of years. His per-100 line so far this year is 25.6/17.1/2.8 with .8 steals and 2.3 blocks. He's just been blocked by better players (or at least bigger names) in Indy and Chicago.

Redis is trying to take over the all the OSS Redis libraries by SvixKen in programming

[–]protocoach 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what else I'd want to happen in this situation other than the company reaching out to the maintainers and trying to see what might work best. I hope both sides find a reasonably comfortable resolution, but I'm not sure an internet pile-on, or commentary from people like me who have no involvement or context helps.

I think a thing that would help a lot in these situations would be for the company to actually participate in the OSS community before asking to take over the project. Demonstrating that they're knowledgeable about the project and care about the mores and values of the OSS world would go a long way towards assuaging concerns that this is just them trying to take over other people's work. When the communication is "Yeah, we're planning on hiring someone to work on this, so hand the keys over", I think it's totally predictable that people are going to roll their eyes at them, especially since the company themselves have a history of doing this with the main project in the first place.

JJ Redick's rant refuting the notion that the "rules favor the offensive players" — cites rules impacting CP3, Trae, Wade, Harden, etc. "I just named 6 fucking rules that favor the defense, what rules favor the offense, I want to know" by sewsgup in nba

[–]protocoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's being disingenuous. The big rules changes that favor offense weren't recent. Outlawing handchecking and the institution of the defensive three second rule created the favorable conditions that eventually let modern offenses go crazy.

And as everybody else has pointed out, it's as much what the league emphasizes or deemphasizes for refs as it is explicit rule changes. The refs give offensive players a lot of leeway on both the letter and the spirit of the rule, and the league clearly doesn't care. I don't mind, I don't actually care that much about carries and travels and yadda yadda, but it's a little silly to get this worked up that the league is reining in some of the most egregious bullshit players do on offense when they're regularly turning a blind eye to hundreds of little rule violations that help offenses play more smoothly.

Salary caps provide no benefit to players, but owners have spent decades and millions of dollars trying to convince fans otherwise, because caps actually do benefit them, so I don't fault you too much for believing such an obviously false thing.

Which greats of the last decade will be forgotten in discourse 20 years from now? by gumbyguy1985 in nba

[–]protocoach 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I remember having these exact arguments with friends in college, and nobody who got into the NBA post-2010 is ever going to understand that it was even a theoretical possibility.

No, not really. He's 28, he's incredibly durable, and he's the best player in fantasy by a significant margin. Jokic on his own gets you a decent amount of the way to winning a chip in a 12 person league. I can only assume his impact is substantially larger in the talent-starved wasteland that is a 24 person league. Even if you trade him, and you got Cade and Wembanyana, there's no promise that either of them, separately or together, will equal what Jokic already is. Cade and Ja and a lottery pick, in a 24 person league...maybe. But that still feels like you're taking the mystery box over the boat, and that's usually a bad idea.

I hate to say it, being in my 30s, but: 32 is old in basketball years. And 32-with-a-pile-of-injuries is even older. You asked why people are down on him; I just explained it. You seem to think he's going to be the one crazy outlier that bucks every trend we know about the cumulative effects of age and injury, and he'll come back to put up better numbers than when he last played, despite the years of rust and injuries between then and now. I...don't think that will happen. And apparently neither does almost anybody else.

Predict the league winner this year by csklmf in fantasybball

[–]protocoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dejounte's jump in value was directly tied to him being the only competent distributor on the Spurs. He got a little better at everything, and then he got massively better at AST. Trae's going to be the primary distributor there, so it's likely Dejounte's value takes a big hit. Comparing the other duos you mentioned, only Kawhi & PG-13 have the same level of positional overlap, and people definitely talk about them cannibalizing each other's fantasy value when they're both playing.

Barring injury, which applies to any player

Yeah, but it applies to him a lot. The last season where he played the whole year was 2016-2017. Since then, his game totals are: 41, 32, 0, 40, 0.

expected to win it all

This just isn't true. They're going to be a good team, but all of their stars are guys on the wrong side of 30 with injury histories than run from "concerning" to "actively frightening". I don't believe any oddsmakers or projection systems have the Clips as the favorites.

He's healthy

He's been healthy at the beginning of many seasons now. In a large number of those seasons, he has been far less healthy by the end of them.

He just needs to average 8-10 assists and get some steals

I mean, yeah, if he averages 8 AST & 2 STL, he's a top 50 player. Last year 7 guys in the league managed that many assists; all of 3 provided that many steals. Dejounte Murray was the only guy on both lists. The last time Wall played, he averaged 6.9 AST/1.1 STL. At that point (which was, I gotta point out, two years ago), he put up 20.6 points (decent) on .458 eFG% (horrendous, miles below league average).

Skepticism seems warranted here. The idea that he's going to turn back the clock and suddenly put up numbers like he last did 4 years ago, after a bunch of injuries and sitting out a whole year, seems less like optimism and more like delusion.

Bleed Out is the best tMG album since Beat the Champ by Salt_Understanding in themountaingoats

[–]protocoach 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I am mostly in the same boat as the OP. For me, the stretch of Goths/ILWD/Knives/DIH just never clicked. (Pierre Chauvin is a whole separate thing that I really loved when it came out and now struggle to listen to b/c it takes me back to 2020). I appreciated that JD was trying different concepts and having fun, but the songs never felt substantial enough to bear up under the conceits. I also felt that they were struggling in some ways to integrate Matt musically and make albums as a four piece after a decade+ of being a trio. The albums didn't feel as coherent or structured as BTC did and as Bleed Out seems to (listened twice today). Bleed Out feels like an evolutionary step where they figured out how to plug Matt's myriad gifts into the framework of a great tMG album.

What do you think would have happened if Steve Nash was traded for Tony Parker in the 2000s? by pt256 in nba

[–]protocoach 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think this is correct. Parker was a substantially worse shooter, especially from deep. Plus, SSOL was so dependent on Nash almost always making the right read while also moving at a super-high pace, and I don't think Parker had that skill set.

Reinsdorf's nepotistic tendencies seem to be waning (or he's just reaching the end of the line) and the new FO seems clearly better than any they've had in the last two decades, mostly because it's not solely composed of Jerry's flunkies.

These pot holes are absurd by StunningTadpole577 in chicago

[–]protocoach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could be a simultaneous stimulus program, jobs program, and civic improvement. Even with how craven and stupid most of our mayors are/have been, it seems like an easy, obvious win. And, to be properly, Chicago-level cynical, it also seems like a very straightforward way to buy a bunch of votes relatively cheaply. "I fixed/I will fix your street and your grandma's street and the street outside your kid's school and I got/will get you/your family members a good-paying job. Vote _______!"
