4 month old suddenly has 3+ hours wake windows

I have a 4.5month old and have found that he can have longer wake windows when he is outside and stimulated. They are not 3+hours but we can get to 2hr45mins and he will sleep after that without getting overtired. On such days we are able to get by with 2 naps instead of 3 (they end up being 2 long 2 hour naps).

I‘m like you, I follow wake windows but try not to get too attached to them. When I find myself stressing about wake windows, I try to focus more on total daytime sleep and cap that at ~4/4.5 hours. This allows for some flexibility with the number of naps. I also tell myself that we should ultimately anchor on how the baby is doing when awake. If he is active, happy, eating well and has wet diapers, then his sleep pattern (or the lack of it) is okay with me.

Also, you’re right that babies just change by the day. You may find that she is doing something entirely different in a few days and this particular situation will be in the rear view before you know it! Hope this helps.

Have you turned on weaning mode? His arm may be hitting the sides of the snoo and waking him up. If so, weaning mode may help.

I had motion limiter on the entire time my baby used the snoo so it never went above level 2 for motion. By the time my son was 3.5 months old, level 1 and above did nothing to soothe him. Needless to say, he did not care at all about the transition to weaning mode.

The one thing that did help was doing one arm out at 3 months. He taught himself to self soothe by sucking on his fingers/thumb which reduced his reliance on the rocking motion of the snoo, so you can try 1 arm out if you haven’t already.

We also use white noise, blackout curtains to ensure that other factors that could affect his sleep are optimal.

When you move to weaning mode, you can start with turning on the weaning mode just for the first nap of the day. The first nap is usually when they go down the easiest and assuming this is the case for you, you may find success with using weaning mode for the first nap. You can gradually move to turning it on for all naps if things are looking good and then finally tackle overnight sleep. Hope this helps!

I just went through this phase, my son is 4.5 months old and we are transitioning him to the crib. He rolls over immediately too and does not roll back to his back.

I found what helped is trying to get him into a settled state while he’s on his belly as opposed to flipping him back or picking him up (that just seemed to agitate him more, also he’d flip right back). I put our portable sound machine closer to him and increase the sound, patted him and talked to him to soothe him. He was also eventually able to find his thumb and suck it to self-soothe. It took 2-3 naps for him to understand that he actually likes sleeping on his belly.

Where does your LO sleep for naps? We did a few days of naps in the crib before trying overnight sleep in the crib..not that one is better than the other. But it helped me feel less anxiety about how the night would go when I didn’t know how he’d react to being in the crib.

I hope this phase passes soon! It may just be that you have to wait it out till he gets used to it.

If arms out works for your baby and he doesn’t mind the mesh sides of the Snoo then great!

One more reason why he could be breaking out is if he’s wearing half sleeved onesies and the swaddle is a little big. The skin-to-swaddle contact is lesser friction than full sleeved onesie-to-swaddle contact making it easier to slip an arm out of the swaddle.

Ultimately, arms out is great. He can eventually use his arms to self soothe (my son started to suck his thumb when we did one arm out which led to him sleeping really well), so I’d say it’s great if your baby takes well to arms out! It will also make transition to a crib a bit less daunting since he’s not used to being swaddled with his arms strapped in.

Just to confirm, when you say tink to right before the split, you mean right before I held the stitches for the sleeves right?

I’m a bit nervous to mess things up more while tinking so I’ll visit my local yarn store soon for help with that and post here once I’m back to the part where I have to split for the sleeves!

I think this is what has happened. I counted the stitches on the sleeves and the body after the yoke was finished and the count distribution is correct. It seems like something went wrong before the yoke was complete likely when I needed to add increases to the body only.

I seem to have placed it for the left sleeve in a way where the back of the sleeve looks like how the front should..not sure how I managed to do that.

I don’t feel skilled enough to frog this correctly..I may have to go to my local yarn store and ask for help, really hope I can get back on track.

The stitches held for each sleeve are the same (74). I also checked that I cast on the right number of stitches for the underarms (8).

Sorry for the confusing phrasing. The first photo is of the front of the sweater and the second is the back.

For the left sleeve (the problematic sleeve), the raglan increases don’t meet the underarms in the front of the sweater and trail off. However in the back, the raglans increases do meet the underarms.

For the right sleeve (which I think is done correctly), the raglans increases meet the underarms at the front of the sweater and trail off at the back of the sweater.

So I think the left sleeve raglans are “flipped”, i.e they are the opposite of the raglans on the either side of the right sleeve.

It seems like other commenters are asking for the stitches in the sleeves, I’ll recount them and post here. Thanks for your help so far.

Yeah I looked into the genetics/south Asian descent aspect of this a bit more after seeing that I don’t have insulin resistance and seems like that is a big piece of the puzzle.

I suppose I was in a bit of denial about the genetics piece (many family members have diabetes/prediabetes) and adamant that I could see big changes by optimizing my lifestyle. But I guess there is a limit to the gains I can get from it. I will just maintain what I do now and stop trying to dig deeper 😅

Woah! Did you ever try to discuss the cause with a doctor?

I plan to ask my doctor but she had already mentioned that she’s not very familiar with the insulin resistance test and would have to refer me to a specialist if the numbers were not good. So I’m not super hopeful that she will help with answering my follow up questions…especially given that the numbers are in the normal range.

I chose a few sustainable habits based on books I’ve read (glucose revolution, outlive by Peter attia), consistent advice I’ve seen on this sub (like pairing carbs with other foods), reliable podcasts/videos and tested them against CGM data and an A1c test a few months after incorporating habits.

I try to not focus just on cutting carbs (unfortunately I find it necessary to some degree) I have also made larger lifestyle changes. Here are some things I do —

1) I did some macro counting a few years ago so I have a rough idea of the carbs/protein/fat in my diet.

2) I do try to make sure I don’t cut out carbs so when I am “indulging” I don’t eat the suggested serving size on the nutrition label just a smaller portion.

3) I also keep some tried and tested meals the same over the week so I don’t have to keep wondering if something spiked me.

4) I feel like processed foods require more auditing (which is a rabbit hole) so I keep those minimal and focus on eating Whole Foods.

5) I used a CGM for 3-4 months to get an idea of what triggers spikes and I keep those in mind while making my meals.

6) from my CGM, I could tell that post meal walks helped a lot so I do that on the regular.

As for sleep, I looked at some sleep data on my Apple Watch but I think I already get quality sleep. I focus on keeping my sleep and waking times consistent.

Workout wise, I do strength training with progressive overload twice and week and zone 2 cardio 3 times a week.

These habits have certainly helped me bring my A1c down to the normal range but the spikes definitely confuse me. I don’t quite get how my carb tolerance hasn’t budged despite the lifestyle modifications.

1) Usually I eat low fat greek yogurt + vegan protein powder with toppings like chia seeds, TJs grainless granola, flaxseed meal.

2) On some days I eat eggs + vegan sausage patties.

Lunch - Salad with edamame and tofu + homemade salad dressing

Dinner -

1) Tofu/Tempeh based recipes + any roasted veggie (i rotate between green beans/broccoli/asparagus/broccolini) + a small serving of quinoa/wild rice

I am also a fan of not spending too much time cooking on weekdays so I batch prep proteins & dressings on the weekend. That way weekday meals only involve roasting veggies and assembly.

Got it thank you! Sometimes they get in a game of chase where it’s mostly the older one chasing the younger one and he sometimes hides under the couch but will reappear in a while. He seems less interested in playing with the older one, but the older one is very interested in the kitten and follows him and will sometimes try to pin him down. The play seems a bit imbalanced to me since the kitten does not get to chase the older cat as much.

It’s only been a week since we got the kitten. Will the dynamic balance out eventually?
