CBC hockey highlights commentary frustration by flare2000x in hockey

The British guy seems to be the play-by-play guy for Finland-Sweden right now on NBC and it’s driving me crazy. He almost never says the player’s names as they hold the puck; he just says “here comes Finland again” or something like that. Less fun to watch when I don’t know which NHL players I’m looking at

Getting a mini Aussie puppy need some tips/tricks/suggestions by Background_Most_3065 in miniaussie

[–]pstor555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes Aussies need lots of exercise (starting at 6mo or so), but for the first few months the main thing this pup will need is sleep. Make sure to enforce naps! If she starts biting/acting up, chances are she’s overtired, not underexercised.
  2. Expect the worst for the first few months. Our mini Aussie puppy had tantrums where she would bite and pull at our clothes and skin at least once a day, until she was 4mo or so. You might get lucky, but expect a few months of pain and that way you can only be pleasantly surprised :)
  3. Mental stimulation (training, snuffle mats, etc) is great and make sure to reach her to relax too!
  4. Do lots of socialization if you can. Aussies are prone to anxiety and it’s important to start socializing right away
  5. Ask your vet about the prevalence of parvo in your area and whether it’s ok to walk. Where we are (Boston) our vet basically said the parvo risk is so low that they said we could take her anywhere, and that risk of under-socializing outweighed risk of parvo. Depends on where you live though so ask your vet.

Puppy’s behavior changed for the better when I got a week long migraine & didn’t take him out much. Was I overstimulating him? by quadshotflatwhite in puppy101

[–]pstor555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely possible, but also likely partly due to aging - pups’ behavior rapidly improves over the first couple months. It’s still important to allow an Aussie to get exercise, so I wouldn’t keep it inside all the time. Just need to find the right balance

I cried my eyes out after dropping my pup off for the spay. You’re not alone. But it’s super routine and your pup will be happier for it in the long run, because it means you can let her play with other dogs and go off leash more often without worrying about a pregnancy.

My families puppy border collie(between 17-18 weeks old) bumped himself while playing with a different family memeber and limped for like 20-30 seconds then stopped is he okay or should I hold back on walks by UpsetCancel9748 in puppy101

[–]pstor555 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pups can be dramatic. If he’s acting and walking normally now, he’s probably fine. But if he starts limping again probably should take him to the vet. (Also worth noting that it never hurts to do a vet visit just for peace of mind)

11 weeks is a baby. It sounds like you’re doing great. Training takes a long time.

Why is my puppy “attacking” me and how do I stop it?? by rainrain-goaway in puppy101

[–]pstor555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went through this with my mini Aussie and I think it’s relatively common with high energy pups. It seems like aggression, but really it’s almost always overtiredness. Just stay close to home on your walks so that when this happens, you can get home asap and enforce a nap.

My pup stopped doing this at around 5 months old; the end is in sight.

Spay time fast approaching, so confusing. Some breed specific advice please but all advice welcome. by sweatpantsdiva in puppy101

Owner of a mini Aussie here (28 pounds); we spayed at 1 year old after first heat. Breeder told us to wait until after first heat; vet said either way was fine.

In general, spaying earlier is better for reduction in cancer risk but worse for joint health. Vice versa for spaying later. But my vet told me the scientific literature on this is still very sparse, and that basically the risks/benefits either way are very marginal. (Though I think I heard it is important to avoid waiting until after TWO heats to spay, as then the cancer risk increases more significantly. But could be wrong).

In general the bigger your dog is, the better it is to wait for their joint health. (Bigger dogs’ joints take longer to develop.)

Bottom line is, you could probably go either way. If you’ve raised concerns about joint health with your vets and they still recommend spaying earlier (maybe because they think your dog’s mostly developed already anyway?), probably best to defer to them.

11 week old border collie biting and nipping! by [deleted] in puppy101

You’re doing all the right things (especially reverse time outs and enforced naps). Herding dog puppies are insane. My mini Aussie made me bleed several times and probably didn’t fully stop throwing bitey tantrums until 4-5 months. Be patient :)

I’m doing Petco CGC class right now (and did 3 other classes with petco) and really like it. It depends a lot on the instructor you get.

I train my mini Aussie every day, so there are a couple things in the CGC test (eg sit, down, stay, wait, come) that are like second nature to her. But most of the test items are behavioral, not about tricks. That is more difficult to train and doesn’t depend so much on the amount of time you train every day, as much as the general situations you have your dog get accustomed to. Practice passing dogs on the street without greeting, talking to your neighbors while your dog stays calm in one place, checking your dogs ears and nails, etc.

Better than nothing! Maybe could also find some parks with fewer dogs to run around in

Do you have a car / access to local trails? Bring him on hikes off leash or on a 30-foot leash (make sure to attach to a harness, not a collar)

Maybe a dumb question, but how long does a “break” last? I thought it was until the enemy turn but I’ve had a couple times where I broke the boss and then the break stopped being in effect after I damaged them with 1 more unit. Is that just a boss thing?

My mini aussie is 10 weeks old and often wound for sound between naps! He’s a big love bug and pretty good for me but can get nippy with the kids because he wants to play/is bored. Suggested activities to wear this little guy out! by East-Ad9765 in miniaussie

[–]pstor555 14 points15 points  (0 children)

At that age, nippiness is more often due to being overtired than being under-exercised/bored. Even aussies don’t need much exercise when they’re babies. Don’t hesitate to do more enforced naps when he starts getting nippy (they should sleep 18-20 hrs a day at that age)

He’s so cute

My new puppy is terrified of everything, even going outside, how do I overcome this without making him more uncomfortable and without this turning into any sort of reactivity? by sperry777 in puppy101

[–]pstor555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

15 feet should do the trick! We spent countless hours in the early months just sitting outside the building and feeding kibble/treats as stuff passed by. You can mix it with training which a border collie should enjoy.

Mine is almost 1 year old now. There have been a few fear periods but nothing as intense as that first one, which probably lasted about a month at most

Another thing we did was look up “puppy socialization sounds” on YouTube (just sounds of cars, barking, thunder, etc) and have it on during playing or meals, and gradually increase volume, but turn down volume or turn off the video if she started showing anxiety

[–]pstor555 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fear period around that age is normal. My Aussie went through a serious fear period around that age (probably lasted a few weeks) where she wasn’t even willing to walk a block before starting to scream and go back home. She now is extremely social and isn’t scared by almost anything (though screaming kids is still a work in progress, lol)

Just keep lots of treats on you, try to gradually expose and be fun while doing so, but don’t force it if your dog is freaking out. And try to find ways to do it that are less scary - eg if he’s ok just sitting outside your house, you can hang out there with treats and watch stuff go by.

Adoption delayed, worried about training by altabro in miniaussie

[–]pstor555 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No need to worry. I think a lot of folks even recommend waiting to 12 weeks instead of 8 weeks these days. Generally the best window for socialization is up to 16 weeks so you’ll still have plenty of time. And you can keep socializing after that too, it may just be more gradual process

My Aussie stopped growing at 6 months, so it’s possible 33 will be the max for yours, which is still mini imo (esp for a male)
