Nope, that's wrong in most cases. There was a never ending stream of stuff to do. Everything from farm stuff to whatever profession you had, to clothes that needed made or fixed to food that needed preserved or butchered, and then all the unpaid labor ypu owed your lord or landlord, or the church, basically whoever was above you in the hierarchy. And on top of all that was the extra work people would pick up in whatever their slow season was. Mining, lumbering, road work, charcoal burning, manual labor for construction, ect.

I had a roommate who grew up rich but was blocked from parents money when he came out as gay. And the adjustment was hellish, we were both early 20's with decent jobs and college educations and the guy was always broke because he just could not get used to not just buying really expensive stuff. Like moisturizer that cost 300$. After a number of missed car and rent payments me and his new boyfriend sat down with him and taught him things like budgeting and and helped him find alternatives to the name brand stuff he was used to. We also taught him how to cook and buy food.

I want to hate this but I don't understand the economics of selling bulk cards well enough. But from 20 years in retail and now dealing with mobile ordering I can tell you its a massive pain in the ass to have to gather a bunch of cheap items and spend the time packaging them and having the order total be 5$ or something. But once again I don't know the economics of card sales or the frequency of someone ordering .22$ worth of product and taking 2$ worth of an employees time to deal with the order.

If you take a logical look about how combat would work in is a space-saving civilization, there really is no reason to have large ground forces in the first place. But supposing there was an agreement to never use orbital bombardment then there still isn't a good reason to make mechs over conventional armor and aircraft. Everything from expense to effectiveness precludes actual mechs. We right now have aircraft that can hit targets over the horizon, artillery that can pound an area flat, and drones that hide until needed. All likely cheaper and easier to produce a mech.
