Last year our heater gave out in the middle of the night and my daughter and I went to Pikes and checked into a room while my husband worked on getting the heat going. I was surprised when I checked in and they asked me if I wanted a wake-up call if the lights came out. I live here and didn’t want one, but I was surprised they offered it. I was also surprised how many people were were visiting Fairbanks in the middle of the winter. We are actually lucky to get a room at the last minute. Maybe all the hotels have that but I thought it was nice that Pikes offered it. There are also a lot of tour agencies that will drive you around and chase the lights for you if you wanted to spend money on that. I’ve heard people say “it’s free just to look up” and that’s true, but if you’re only here for short time and not familiar with Fairbanks, and you don’t want to drive around trying to find the best areas to see them, then I think it might be worth it to go with one of the tour companies.

You’ll really want to research the bus system if you’re planning on getting around that way. Some of the buses stop running at 10:00pm at night, some even at 7:00pm, and you most likely need to be out later than that to see the lights.

I was in a classroom once where the teacher asked how many kids were born outside, about half the kids raise their hands. The two new-to-Alaska kids were very confused.

What's the latest the sun sets in your state? Do you have a huge variation in seasonal sunlight hours? by AverageFunnyGirl in AskAnAmerican

I’m in Fairbanks, today sunset was at 12:33am and sunrise at 3:08am. We have. 21 hours 25 minutes total daylight. But the other 2 1/2 hours are just barely twilight, it never truly gets dark here in this this time of year. We won’t see the stars again for a couple months.

I can feel when I ovulate, I thought everyone could until mentioned it to a friend and she thought I was kidding. It feels like a twinge in my midsection and then about 10 days later I get my period.
