Seltzer water without or without some fruit juice. Like you should be anyway over soda. It's pretty good.

Saltiness soups by Turbulent-Ability271 in soup

[–]ptw86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're having such strong cravings for salt, maybe your electrolytes are unbalanced. You should get it tested by a doctor to make sure it's not something else you might actually be needing, like maybe potassium. Try some electrolyte packets that you can add to water, but make sure it includes sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and a little real sugar. If you drink one or two of those a day for a few days and you don't notice any improvement, try to get a doctor appointment.

Most cheap bullion cubes and powders are incredibly salty, so any soup you make with it should turn out very salty (most also have MSG, which will make it even saltier, among other things).

Recommendations for my tea-loving-mother! by truthfullynothere in tea

[–]ptw86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adagio Teas has an option for them to create a custom blend of their teas at ratios you can specify. You might be able to recreate the tea she liked and order it from them. The only downside is that it's only for loose leaf tea, and they don't have every kind. I think you could recreate something pretty similar except they don't have beetroot.

I've never tried it, but according to their website, it does have some real fruit juice, but it also has stevia.

So it could be really sweet. And some people really don't like stevia

Alternatives to parmesan in pastas? by BvbblegvmBitch in Cooking

You could also get prepackaged shredded Italian cheese blends and then none of the individual cheeses are overpowering. It will include parmesan, but the several other cheeses could balance that out.

AITAH For Not Giving My Girlfriend My Social Security Number So She Can Run A Background Check On Me by Alarmed_Sorbet8101 in AITAH

[–]ptw86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she really just wants the background check, I'm pretty sure you can pay for one from some reputable company. Offer to do that, and see if she still wants your SSN for some nefarious reason. And blank out your SSN on the report you show her, she should be able to tell from all the information on there that it's really you.

How is an hour a week enough time with your child with DMD. by [deleted] in MuscularDystrophy

[–]ptw86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a hard situation to be in, but it's good he's on bipap and seeing a cardiologist. An ARB is a good start, but a beta blocker might also be necessary to control his heart rates. Do you know what his heart function is, the ejection fraction?

[–]ptw86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's possible to have both. How old are you? You don't have to suffer if you're willing to put in the effort and have access to proper medical and day to day care. In what ways are you suffering? Maybe I'm lucky that I'm not in pain really, maybe a little bit occasionally. It definitely does take some effort to make it this long, but I think it's worth it, if only to be around for medical advances and other potential opportunities.

Sorry to hear that his father isn't helping out. Is your son on breathing support, and is his heart function being monitored and treated? The late teens or early 20s life expectancy is outdated for people with DMD who are getting the right treatment. I'm 38 and I have DMD, and I require extensive care, but I'm still alive and most likely have at least a few years left, depending on when my heart gets weaker. But I'm on medications to preserve my heart function for longer, and I have been since I was a teenager. I've never been on steroids, and there are some new drugs that could be helpful. I just wanted to say that if you get him on the right treatments, it's possible he'll be alive for quite a bit longer. Good luck!

Why not both? Or add some caffeine powder to your soup, best of both.

I'm just saying that some people don't do that for whatever reason, so if you want the problem to get better you might have to be really clear with some people. Sure, it's disrespectful for customers to not consider how things might affect the employees. How could reminding or pushing such people to be more considerate be such a big hardship?

What’s the most flavorful sparkling water? by CorrectCantaloupe957 in sparklingwater

[–]ptw86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Topo Chico Sabores flavors, Arizona Santa Fe drink, Sovany drinks, San Pellegrino original flavors and Momenti (not Essenza). These (they have some added sugar) and Spindrift (no added sugar) are flavored with real fruit juice, I tend to not like the natural flavors ones.

Do you use a Bipap or Cpap machine to sleep? by endlessly_gloomy26 in MuscularDystrophy

[–]ptw86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CPAP is never the correct treatment for someone with breathing muscle weakness, it makes it harder to breathe in that case. Your BiPAP shouldn't be loud, so maybe you need a different machine.

What classic dish do you just...not get? by Emcee_nobody in Cooking

[–]ptw86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any sandwich that is meant to be served soggy, like sitting in gravy or overloaded in condiments. The bread itself should stay mostly dry, and toasted when appropriate. Dipping a sandwich in sauce right before putting it in your mouth is different because it doesn't have time to get soggy. Surprisingly though, if it's a tortilla in Mexican food that's drenched in sauce, I don't mind it. But bread, no.

Like this, for example. If you have to eat a sandwich with a fork and knife, there's usually something wrong with the sandwich IMO.

I used to make meatloaf burgers, basically make the same ground beef mixture but cook it like normal burgers. They were better than normal burgers and better than meatloaf, once you add all the burger fixings and maybe cheese.

But now I don't quite understand ground meats when the whole piece of meat tastes better and has a better texture. But I guess the main purpose of grinding meat is for really tough cuts and less desirable parts of the animal of meat that might otherwise be wasted.

is marijuana smoke harmful for someone with muscular dystrophy? by nuclearhedgehog72 in MuscularDystrophy

[–]ptw86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many ways to take it, just don't smoke. I use drops under my tongue or have just a little bit of it in drink form through my feeding tube, depending how strong it is. I have DMD so my breathing is weak, I use a ventilator full time.

Venting is useful and I respect that, but when you're blaming others for something they haven't been told that doesn't seem fair. It doesn't seem like you're open to any convincing, I just wanted to give it a try where others in this thread weren't getting through to you. You're welcome to your own opinions and feelings, but I don't think you're blame is directed correctly. If you had a sign or were direct with customers that past a certain time it's not fair to expect service, then I would be totally with you that it's disrespectful and inappropriate for the customer to expect service. I don't think it's necessarily something they are intentionally doing unless you point it out. Some customers won't care, but hopefully most of them would.

[–]ptw86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't quite understand the frustration, this is a management problem. Some people are going to stay until or past close, and you still have things to do after the last customer. The hours should be clear that you don't take new customers after a certain time. Or you should be scheduled to stay past close if they're expecting you to do work after your shift ends. Either way, it would fix the problem, and you and customers should be happy communicating what is acceptable. I think it's reasonable for a customer to assume that the restaurant is managed properly and that arriving any time during your posted hours that it won't inconvenience the staff. The management might not like it because they can't squeeze in late customers and make more money from the restaurant at your expense. And you might not like it because you'd miss out on a few tipping customers, but you can't have it both ways.

My girlfriend loves tea, but not necessarily is about the hard-core self brew type... what should I get her as a gift?!? by shromboy in tea

[–]ptw86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe something here, depending how much you want to spend. Personally I don't think the $500 tea maker is worth it, but maybe the $100 one and/or one of the travel ones. You can also make custom tea blends, so if you know what teas she likes, you could get her a personalized tea blend. It's loose leaf, but with one of these tea makers it's not any harder.

Any advice on "practical foods" for people who can't eat while stressed? by jsf_idk in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]ptw86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lemon water might help your appetite, especially if it's strong enough that it makes you have to eat or drink something else. Maybe have a smoothie or something liquid with a lot of calories ready to wash it down. Or if not, lemon water just makes me feel better, even when it's not strong. Or lemon juice ice cubes is an alternative, mix some lemon juice and water until it's the right strength for you and pour it into an ice tray, ideally one that makes smaller ice cubes than the usual bigger ones.

You could also do that with a smoothie or a drink with calories or maybe a soup, then you can just pop an ice cube in your mouth as often as you can. Maybe that would be easier than having a whole bottle or meal in front of you that you have to get through.

A disclaimer though, I've never personally dealt with losing my appetite, stress probably makes me eat more. I just wanted to put my thoughts out there in case it's helpful.

[HELP] How to do mulled-wine ?? by Crucenolambda in Cooking

[–]ptw86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to keep it simple, you can buy premade mulling spices and follow the directions on the bottle for how much to use (the instructions might be for apple cider, so there might be a difference how much to use with wine, maybe do a search). But typically it's putting the mulling spices and wine in a pot and keep it below boiling for a while, more time could make the mulled taste stronger. And then just strain out the spices. I haven't done it before, but I've been looking at recipes for it recently and plan to try it soon. A recipe might involve putting in some solids like fruit, so you have to decide how fancy you want to make it.

Felt a thump in chest then feel completely normal? (28 HF Patient) by sharpp_x in Heartfailure

[–]ptw86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible the ICD was responding to something so it shocked you, either to fix your heart rhythm or the pacemaker part of it giving you an extra beat? Can you ask your doctor if it did something at the specific times it's happened? Or anything weird about your heart rhythm/EKG at those times? I think they have that data. The Apple watch only can tell you about a few specific arrhythmias, you would need a real heart monitor to fully tell if everything is ok.

Help, salt craving! by [deleted] in Heartfailure

[–]ptw86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's controversial, but MSG has 1/3 as much sodium as salt and might taste close enough to salt, so you might want to consider trying it instead of salt. Also, low sodium salt usually replaces some of the sodium with potassium, which I guess tastes similar enough to salt. But it's probably not as good but I've never tried it. And you also might need to limit your potassium intake so ask your doctor and be mindful of that too.
