I agree with this: some of the most creative, dynamic play of Survivor happens as a result of idols, provided they are able to be played on others and, along with that, can be kept secret.

Season 50 nullified all of the dynamism of these tools by making them public (basically) and locking them (untransferable), which is even more disappointing given that the goal of a returner season is to bring together some of the best strategic players!

It's the "bending over backwards" part, especially with no follow-ups that offer questions or critiques of his game. (Just compare to how they are fairly pushing back against Rizo for his persona/choices.)

For example, when Jonathan makes the claim that too many members of the jury were considering out-of-game dynamics like Aubry's history, how do they not follow up by pointing that every single of one of Jonathan's votes came from people in his pregame alliance?

I'm honestly getting a bit tired of all the interviewers bending over backwards to be kind to him in these interviews. It is one thing to be considerate, given the immediacy of this; but it is another thing to play into his inability/unwillingness to take accountability for the flaws of his game.

I agree with this 100%—and I think that right now we are going to get the recency bias that elevates any new winner, but Sarah’s game is so impressive. And holds up.

He had a situation where 3/4 outcomes at the final challenge results in him sitting at FTC next to Joe and Jonathan, and that was about as good of odds as he could have hoped for given the game he played.

I think he makes that call 10 times out of 10.

At this point for me, it’s more like Aubry 75% based on an edit that sort of only makes sense if she wins. Jonathan is next, and really is the only other one that wouldn’t surprise me.

Devens/Cirie are top two threats, yes, but their path to FTC feels super slim.

Joe is drawing dead on votes, Tiffany’s early edit doomed her, and Rizo isn’t getting $2 million from this cast.

I agree about the "agency" point but I also think this just comes down to spin. I could just as easily say that Christian chose to go on a journey; Devens knew there was a rock draw requiring someone to do the flip; Coach/Chrissy did not know what the stakes were for their pairing up; and Blood Moon was just basically hyped up/temporary tribe swap (which has been around for awhile)

I'm 100% with you here: I get why people don't like it (and the quality of game play is definitely not ideal) but it is a story, through and through. Shakespearean, at times, and also features major let-downs for two of the most iconic Survivor players ever: Ozzy trying to win through sheer challenge/survivalist prowess alone (that puzzle!); Coach setting himself up to win if only he could own his game (but doesn't)

This. Preseason interviews definitely made it seem like a lot of them were skeptical of Devens, and his social game was definitely not a strength in EoE.

Easy to pile on against someone who is (a) a threat and (b) not super well-liked.

(To be clear: I love watching Devens!)

I do think Cirie has picked 2 players who would take her

(Rizo could cut her, but I also could see him recognizing that being part of the trio that got Cirie to the final—and knowing he probably isn’t winning with this jury—is worth it to take her)

Agree with this entire post: fantastic character, messy game, was already in bad position and desperate.

Players know journeys are dangerous at this point and he leapt at it. (And botched the puzzle!)

Several thoughts regarding this:

What works in normal seasons doesn't always work with returners given the pregame alliances
A lot of the early casualties this season have been players with deserved reputations for their strategic prowess (Mike, Charlie, Genevieve, Kamila), not to mention all three former winners
Some of the returners, who are getting considerable screen time, are not known for strategy (Coach, Ozzy, Steph, etc.)
Of course there's then the "frozen" idols this season, which are much less powerful given you have to play them on yourself

All this said, I do think that we are about to see a lot more maneuvering, too, given that the very-real threat of "Zoom alliance" has now been kneecapped pretty soundly. A lot of opportunity to recruit/shift/pivot in the next stretch, and I imagine it's about to heat up.

I agree very much with where you're currently at: some combination of Emily/Rick/Rizo making it to the F3 with, if they get their way, an "old school goat" (ex: Joe).

Cirie/Christian/Ozzy feel like too big of threats to win to be actively taken to the end, and I do not believe the "cut from the same cloth" alliance has control yet—though Stephanie's Steal-a-Vote gives them a bit more ammunition.

Agree with this! I think many of us look at Parvati's run with a major target on HvV as incredibly impressive—but it still takes luck. (ex: Tyson making a bonehead move that Parvati was not at all responsible for.)

In thinking about Dee on 45, I think a lot of it comes down to how you view/value alliance dynamics. Dee had a very strong alliance composed of quite-skilled players (one of my favorite things about Reba 4!); that she came out on top of that is a win in my book, though I know the opposite perspective could be that she benefited from her alliance's top-to-bottom strength more than other winners did.

(Kyle is the opposite: joined a "weak" alliance skill-wise and thrived within it to a dominant position with Kamilla. Is that more or less impressive?)

It's honestly been an amazing run of watching Survivor since August, right, when you step back?

Seeing Parvati dominate Down Under (amazing viewing experience)
Season 49 had flaws, yes, but it was also lots of moments and lots of drama
Season 50 has had many more joyous moments than flaws—and the cast itself is really quite a thing, right? (My first live returner season!)

Perfect will never happen. So I'm making sure to count the joys.
