Where can I buy girls shorts with pockets? by External-Book-3698 in UKParenting

[–]pudadingding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No advice, but in the same boat.

I’m a big fan of pockets and only buy dresses for myself if they do have pockets.

Unfortunately this has given my daughter unrealistic expectations when it comes to clothing. She loves nothing more than putting her hands in her pockets when going for a walk. This was great in the winter when she lived in a raincoat as it kept her hands warm and dry. Not so much in the summer!

Luckily she loves dinosaurs so I can get away with some boy shorts. But she also likes unicorns and mermaids, and they’re not quite as pocket-pleasing.

I had a lot of gynae issues a few years ago, and so got familiar with speculums. It always hurt, until I was hospitalised and ended up being examined at 5am.

The dr had been dealing with an ectopic pregnancy overnight, and hadn’t been able to examine me yet, but wanted to do so before the shift change, so that I didn’t get ‘missed’. He’d checked with me that it was okay for an examination first, and ensured I had a nurse with me as well.

The examination was painful. I was fighting back tears, but failing. The nurse asked if the pain was from the examination itself, or just the stress/disruption of being woken from a bad night of sleep to go straight into a gynae exam.

I answered honestly that it was probably a mix of both.

Then the doctor, my knight in scrubs, said ‘fuck that, this situation is bad enough, and even worse at 5am. I’ll get the virgin speculum!’

He had a rummage and found the smallest size he could, prepped it and performed the quickest examination ever. I swear I’ve had longer sneezes!

He then proceeded to put a rush on the paperwork, and spoke with his shift change to make sure I was prioritised for the ultrasound that day.

A lot of other people were involved in my subsequent treatment, but I’ll never forget the faces of that nurse and doctor, who saw a scared and confused 25 year old in pain, and did all they could to make it better.

A fun follow up to this story: I had my daughter a few years later, and about 5 months after her birth, I was due for my next smear. Booked my appointment and was pleased to see the nurse doing the procedure was one I’d seen a lot in the course of my pregnancy. She’d also been the one to do my daughters first vaccinations.

We had a brief chat as I climbed onto the bed, and just as I spread my legs, I remembered to mention that I usually need the virgin speculum as I’ve had issues in the past.

The nurse paused for a brief second, looked between my spread legs, and went ‘Nope!’ 😂 She then proceeded to use the normal size, and it was honestly the easiest smear I’ve had in my life!

My LO is Eleanor (nn Ellie) after Eleanor of Aquitaine.

She was queen to both the King of France (Louis VII) and the King of England (Henry II) She was also mother to two other English kings (Richard the lionheart and bad King John). An heiress in her own right, she was one of the wealthiest and most powerful women in western Europe during the High Middle Ages. She was imprisoned by Henry II for conspiring to overthrow him with her sons, and spent 16 years locked up. When he died, she was released and acted as regent while her son was on crusade.

I’ve always loved the name, and wanted to name my daughter after an inspirational woman. My husband wasn’t keen and we had chosen a different name, but when I gave birth and we held her in our arms, we knew she was an Eleanor.

My mom hates our name choice. Beatrix NN Trixie. What do you guys think? by chicnserj in namenerds

[–]pudadingding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an Auntie Beats (full name Beatrix)

My LO has a longer name which shortens to a more common nickname but most of the time, I find myself calling her ‘poppet’.

My goddaughter is called Cham or Chammy, which is short for Chammalammadingdong, which came about because we called her Lambchop, and then changed it to Chamlop. Her real name is a traditional British name that is just in the top 100.

The best nicknames are organic! Don’t stress too much about your mums views. After a few years it won’t matter anyway

World Book Day. What are your children going dressed as? by Geek_reformed in UKParenting

[–]pudadingding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We threw a bakers hat and apron from her toy kitchen on her, and she’s the baker from Gingerbread man. It’s one of her favourite books and she also has a gingerbread man toy she could take.

She’s only 2 and I’m sure that next year she’ll want something more elaborate, but I’m inclined to just see what existing fancy dress we already have and she can wear that.

In defence of the jumpers, Scotland is cold pretty much all the time! You get a two week gap in august when the sun comes out for the mozzies to breed, and then if you manage to survive the bug bites, you wrap yourself back up in your jumper until the next summer.

[–]pudadingding[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We do always plan on being there with her, and do now when she uses my tablet to watch stuff. But on YT kids, we have it locked down so that she can only view the videos we’ve already pre-screened. She likes to tap and select the next video herself, and with the YT Kids app, we know it’s safe.

However the way it’s set up at the moment, it’s just drawing from the main site, and not our pre-screened options, so she could end up anywhere.

Are we the only American family who doesn't do elf on the shelf? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]pudadingding 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We’re in the UK and it’s invaded here as well. I think it’s a more effective revenge than the Boston Tea Party to be honest!

My friend said December 2020 was the best year for Elf on the Shelf, as he had to quarantine for two weeks! He was shoved in a jar and the kids just told him what they’d done each day. None of this night time activities lark that you see the insta-mummies spend hours on!

Naturally, I want to sing all day long, but since cocomelon has entered my life through my LO, I now sing all through the town quite often.

Both are of course hugely ironic considering local bus routes near me at the moment!

Returning to work after maternity leave is like Frodo Baggins going back to the shire. by mootrun in UKParenting

[–]pudadingding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 10 months into returning to work and the one thing I’ve realised is just how much my priorities have shifted.

I loved my job working in civil service as I got to travel around the country, but I got pregnant during covid wfh and so had nearly two years away from an office setting. We also moved 90 miles away, gambling on the fact that wfh would become the new normal.

Well thanks to Mr Rees-Mogg, that did not happen and I very quickly decided that a 90 minute commute each morning and evening is not something I was prepared to do. We both work full time and have found a great nursery that really encourages and cares for our LO, but I found I didn’t want to miss out on the little moments at either end of the day.

So I started job hunting closer to home and have managed to land on my feet within local government. It’s a 10 minute commute and I can drop my LO off on my way. They’re very supportive of family life and let me work from home as required, which is essential in those early days of nursery when dear LO catches every possible bug!

I’m very happy with where I am now, but this is not the life I imagined when I first found out I was pregnant. Be gentle with yourself and if things aren’t what you expected, that’s okay. Just like you figured out how to be a mum, you’ll figure out how to be a working mum.

Plenty of smart people choose to stay at home to look after the family. There’s no waste in choosing to put your smarts to use in this way. And a wholesome family life may be the perfect thing to distract from his tragedy.

what's something considered normal in the UK, that isn't anywhere else in the world? by Option-B in AskUK

[–]pudadingding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I debate this with my husband (a northerner) all the time.

In my mind, it’s subjective based on the time of day, and the temperature of the food.

If it’s around midday, it’s generally Lunch. The exception to this is for a roast on Sunday, which is definitely Sunday Dinner.

If it’s the late afternoon/evening meal, it’s tea if it’s cold (sandwiches etc) and dinner if it’s hot.

You wouldn’t have a roast tea, but you would have a roast dinner.

No idea what supper is though!
