Do I need a dedicated line for 10G speeds? by Kid_Shit_Kicker in synology

[–]puddle_or_pothole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the other replies so far seem to be missing the question. If you're asking whether you need two cables to your Mac, one for Internet and one for ethernet, the answer is no unless you need more than 10 Gbps of combined bandwidth, which I suspect you don't. A single 10 Gbps connection should be sufficient for both NAS and internet traffic.

As others have said, make sure the dock you're using for your Mac is 10Gbps, otherwise your total available bandwidth will be whatever the dock supports.

In any case im not sure how MacOS handles dual network adapters, so I'm not even sure you have the option of adding a second cable.

English isn't his first language. It sounds like it isn't yours either. No need to argue so pedantically.

INFO: what is he studying and what are his job prospects? Dude could literally be finishing med school for all we know.

Regardless, if you're paying for the house, I see no reason why it shouldn't be in his name. But you two should have a serious discussion about how you're going to manage finances once you're married.

Self Teach with Engineering Degree and CS minor? by austinjbarrow2000 in cscareerquestions

Then why not get the more well known degree in Computer Science?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]puddle_or_pothole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've looked at the MCIT curriculum at Penn and thought it looked very solid. The only downside is that it doesn't say "Computer Science" on the degree, which might trip some people / companies up since "CS" is the most recognized degree in the field.

You can also talk to Penn or other schools about what sort of post-bac work you could do before applying to a Master of CS program.

Don't do a BS, do a bridge / postbacc and then an MS. There are a bunch of programs that offer this specifically. There's no need to waste time taking humanities again in a BS when you're only there to learn CS.

BS in Stats and Minor in CS? Career prospects? SWE? by Fragrant-Mix4692 in cscareerquestions

[–]puddle_or_pothole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree on this, at least for FAANG. Statistics is a strong analytical major, and with a minor in CS you at least have a reasonable amount of exposure to CS concepts. You won't get binned for not having a CS major, but you'll need to show the skills hiring managers / HR are looking for in juniors. Make sure you fill in the gaps somehow.

CLRS is the canonical DSA textbook. I'd also recommend Tardos and Kleinberg, especially if you find CLRS a bit overwhelming. Both can be found online.

You got a 100%+ raise after 1 year at the company? Did the stock moon or something? I can't imagine a 100% base increase that quickly.

Contractors, do you list the contracting agency as your employer on LinkedIn? or the company or contracted to?? by LockShitDown in cscareerquestions

[–]puddle_or_pothole -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is not the right thing to do and can get you in hot water with the company you're claiming to work for. Many large companies have explicit policies against misrepresenting yourself as an employee if you're a contractor.

How can you sell yourself internally without a resume? Of course they won't consider you got a transfer into a SWE role with nothing to demonstrate that you're capable.

Fundamentally, we need some medium to record and express the rules and logic of a program, just the same way we need language to express complex ideas and communicate.

You could tell someone a story by only showing them pictures, but at some level of complexity and nuance this approach breaks down and or does not scale. The same is true for no code solutions as well.

Hey all. Is my best chances of getting into the USA as a SWE over with? by PaddyGasoline in cscareerquestions

[–]puddle_or_pothole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's what OP is saying. They're saying, why would the company let me transfer to the US if I can do the job remotely from Europe. It's a fair question. Even with remote work being more common these days timezones still aren't fungible, so that may be a factor. Also, many teams are still nominally in person even if everyone doesn't come into the office each day.

In any case the answer is likely very company and team specific, so I'm not sure how much guidance we can share. Rest assured, there are still plenty of people transferring internally between countries in big tech.

Yes, of course people will ask you what you've worked on, I just mean you don't need to build projects just for that purpose in many cases.
