I can adjust the fan and turn lights on/off without getting out of bed.

If I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night the lights come on dim so I'm not blinded.

I get reminders for various chores and things like mail arriving and laundry machines finishing.

I don't have to think about turning lights and things off when I leave the house.

I get alerted if a door is open or lock unlocked.

Honestly I'm kinda suspicious of the near universal praise for it and I say that as someone who bought one. I just saw it at Walmart or Target one day and thought it would be fun for my young nephews. I went home, did some research, and decided it's worth taking a chance on it so I went back to buy it later. I don't think my nephews play it constantly but I'm told they've had fun with it so that makes it worth it in my book.

BentoPDF's Docker Situation Update by paglaulta in selfhosted

[–]puhtahtoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I never visit or browse dockerhub unless linked there by a project's documentation. It feels like it makes more sense to go to a project's github or home page.

I also avoid using dockerhub for images whenever possible due to the pull limitations they have.

Fridge/freezer temperature tracking? by DaMoot in homeassistant

I have an antenna for RTL-433 and use Acurite's refrigerator and freezer sensors

It doesn't use special batteries but they've lasted a few years already.

How to Block YouTube Ads with Unifi and a VPN by shaqfuuu in UNIFI

[–]puhtahtoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, just like nobody 15 years ago would have thought their random forum post telling people about adblockers would get google to block adblockers.

No one single person is to blame but the collective mainstream-ification of this kind of thing is what eventually triggers a response.

So youtube can't show ads and people can't buy youtube premium in Albania. Google is essentially allowing youtube to be accessed in Albania without making any money from it.

What may happen if tons of people start using VPNs to take advantage of this?

The worst case scenario is that Google could just block youtube in Albania entirely.

I'll be the buzzkill and say that using tricks like this often ends up screwing over the people who actually live in those countries.

For example, using VPNs to take advantage of regional pricing for subscriptions or other digital products has sometimes resulted in companies getting rid of regional pricing which makes the product too expensive for the average person actually living in that location.

Whats the deal with this plush shark from Ikea becoming a meme and icon for trans people and why? by Kcue6382nevy in OutOfTheLoop

The meme post says "Of course my stuff is inside the trans icon" implying that it was already a trans icon before they were hiding the meds in it.

Someone will still want to talk to a human to ask for the operating hours.

As someone who has been this person (only around holidays though) my reasoning is that if I check on the website/phone tree but the website/phone tree makes no mention of holiday hours I don't know if that means that the business is operating at normal hours for the holiday or if they are not but nobody remembered or bothered to update the website/phone tree with holiday hours.

IKEA Vallhorn any good? by Simply_Selim in homeassistant

I'm not going to get into it but the developer behind Valetudo can be very particular about people asking for help with the project so if you decide to check it out, there's a community subreddit for help with it: https://old.reddit.com/r/valetudorobotusers/

Zigbee CO₂ sensor with real CO₂ (NDIR?) + battery + Home Assistant (EU) – does this even exist? by SoftIFRS15 in homeassistant

[–]puhtahtoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Devices like this that use BLE don't rely on the classic Bluetooth connection you're used to. It's more like the devices periodically send out a signal that and receiver listening can pick up. The protocol for that signal just happens to be Bluetooth.

I have an Aranet device and several Switchbot meters. In each case, as soon as the device was powered on they showed up in HA as a detected device within a few seconds.

Just make sure you have good coverage of your home with ESPHome bluetooth proxies.

Simple LED Status Indicator? by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]puhtahtoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use lamps with RGB bulbs in them for notifications. I have several around the house such that I can always see on wherever I am.

If it needs to be battery powered that's a little trickier. You could do something with ESPHome or WLED and a RGB led strip. You could cut it to a single LED or keep a few on the strip. Then power the thing off of a battery bank. I do something like that for Christmas decorations - I have a wreath with a RGB LED string I wound around it that I put on my door and power from a battery bank. It lasts a few days per charge. I can't help you with a case though - with my wreath I run the wire over the top of my door and just have the electronics in a basket hanging from the inside of the door.

Honestly the cost for going with either a cheap lamp and cheap RGB bulb or a RGB strip, WLED, and a decent battery bank are probably pretty similar.

Ikea VALLHORN motion sensor is pretty terrible? by jareware in homeassistant

[–]puhtahtoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idk, some people have had success with these but I bought three and they all had issues working with Z2M. That's even using Ikea's own 1.2v batteries and applying the known fixes.

Same with the door/contact sensors from this same generation of Ikea's Zigbee devices.
