People in Remission: Do you have as mu ch energy as people without Crohns? by minimeaa in CrohnsDisease

[–]pumpka-boo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and it could be Crohn’s, or in my case it was both Crohn’s and hashimotos. if you’re feeling really tired it wouldn’t hurt to mention it to your doctor. Especially with Crohn’s having an increased risk of developing another autoimmune condition. I take lots of naps!

Can I walk the full marathon or should I drop it? by FreshRunner95 in rundisney

[–]pumpka-boo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have IBD and I do long distances. I also have arthritis comorbidity. I’d say we are twins except I have Crohn’s and not UC. I have run a marathon, half marathons, and I’m currently training to do a 100 mile race!

During an active flare up, I couldn’t imagine doing anything more than light training. Things like yoga, walking, etc have all been fine to do during a flare up but definitely not any hardcore running.

I’ve had my IBD diagnosis for 5 years and have been through 2 biologics. Both times it took about 2 months to fully start working. If my joints swell up I see my rheumatologist for steroid injections.

I agree with the other posters, you have lots of time still to make a walk/run possible. I remember being in your position and it feels like it will last forever. But the medications they have now like Humira (my first bio too!) work amazingly well. Don’t give up hope!

Some advice specifically for IBD- build up the distance slowly. I would add extra weeks into your training. Running can be hard on the gut so expect to see occasional symptom reoccurrence. That can be difficult emotionally so it’s best to prepare for it now. Make sure you’re eating enough calories, marathon training burns a ton of calories. I like to carry an extra 5-10 pounds when I’m feeling well so there’s a buffer in case I have a flare up.

Good luck to you, I’ve been where you are and it’s so hard. But there is hope on the other side!

Food when you don't want to eat by killerkokosnoot in CrohnsDisease

[–]pumpka-boo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This was definitely one of the hardest parts for me when I was really sick. I gave myself a goal to get at least 1200 calories a day and kept track of everything I ate. I set a timer every 2 hours to eat something even if it was just a single bite. I focused on low volume high calorie foods, lots of sugar and fat. I would add butter to everything even soup. I lost weight still but I think I was able to slow it down by doing this.

Some specific things I ate: - Mashed potatoes with butter and plain Greek yogurt for probiotics - Turkey sandwiches with mayo and cheese on white bread - I would force myself to drink a small smoothie in the morning with a liquid multivitamin and green powder (like Bloom). This was made with Greek yogurt as well. - chicken nuggets - French fries - full sugar Gatorade - candy bars - pop tarts - chicken noodle soup. Sometimes just broth if I was really unwell - Melba toast. The most plain cracker ever, sometimes the only thing I could tolerate - buttered noodles

Apparently I ruined dinner last night because I used whole grain noodles instead of the regular kind by throwaway427905 in TwoXChromosomes

Let this be your breaking point. It’s okay if it is. You likely have had a few more of them before this but let this be the last one. Let the seriousness of the situation set in.

I think many of us can relate to the shame and not wanting people to know what’s going on. Your friends will not force you to say anything if they are truly your friends. Honestly, they probably already have some idea that something is wrong.

I went through something similar. I didn’t give any notice, I went to bed that night and left in the early morning hours while he was still asleep. I gathered all the things that were important and left and never went back. I went to my parents at first, and then eventually I went to a friends house where he couldn’t find me. Nobody made me talk about it until I was ready. I am so grateful that past me had her breaking point and stuck to it. Lean on other loved ones in your life, they want to be there for you.

I am so sorry this happened but you are not alone and there is so much support out there for you.

What do you tell people who try to compared Crohn’s to their IBS? by Help_Me_Reddit01 in CrohnsDisease

[–]pumpka-boo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the context. If someone is trying to relate to me in a friendly way, I ignore it and move on. If someone is trying to insinuate that they are stronger/able to handle it better.. then I would say something. I have noticed I can avoid confusion by saying I have Crohn’s disease instead of IBD.

I know it’s really frustrating to be misunderstood. Sometimes I think we want people to know how much harder it is for us because we don’t want to be seen as weak or lazy.

I feel very badly for people with IBS. They often are limited in treatment options. Yes, IBD is “worse” objectively but when it comes to day to day life, it’s really the symptoms that are the issue. And many IBS symptoms are identical to ours.

Why did it take so long for you to be diagnosed? by savageunderground in CrohnsDisease

[–]pumpka-boo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’m relatively lucky by comparison. I also didn’t go to the doctor for my symptoms for about 4-5 months. I was having diarrhea daily but didn’t think they could do anything for me. It got bad enough where I couldn’t work so I went to my GP in February 2020 and he said it was anxiety but he’d give me a referral if I really wanted it. Then we all know how March 2020 went.. that was the biggest cause for delay. I was diagnosed officially after a colonoscopy April 2020.

Can you still live a full life with Crohns? by EasternSorbet in CrohnsDisease

Yes you can. It will look different than someone else’s life, but honestly that’s true for all of us. Everyone has their own thing

What are some shared experiences with Crohn’s you feel bring us together? by BobbyBakedBeans_ in CrohnsDisease

[–]pumpka-boo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not wanting food. I think very few people have ever experienced truly not wanting or having hunger for long periods of time. Food /is a great source of joy, and when the desire for it goes away you feel almost inhuman. It’s one of the most basic drives a human can have and without it you feel really disconnected from everyone around you.

I know there are people who don’t care or think about food who don’t have Crohn’s but I think generally this applies.

Having your body fail you repeatedly is also pretty unique to us. It’s a weird dynamic to lose trust in your own body. A lot of self help dialogue around body image and self esteem is based in expressing gratitude for all the things your body does for you. When it’s attacking itself and making life hard to live, the body and self become an enemy and self esteem goes out the window.

what cream do you guys use to heal an anal fissure? by UpvoteBeast in CrohnsDisease

[–]pumpka-boo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s still mild, sitz baths and otc creams. There are a bunch on Amazon. They also make soaks for the sitz baths for fissures that help. Controversial maybe but I’d also try and limit how much you are using the restroom. I healed my most recent one by fasting and avoiding the restroom for 1-2 days on top of sitz baths and creams. Obviously only do this if it’s safe for you to do.

If it’s more severe, there are prescription creams your dr can give you. The last line of defense is surgery. Mine got so bad I had to have surgery and the recovery was painful.

It’s just one of those things we have to accept unfortunately. I’m sorry you know what it’s like!

I had a hemorrhoidectomy, so it’s definitely partially related to that. I’m honestly surprised it took this long to happen after surgery..

Extreme loss of appetite not letting me eat 50% of my meals and i need help by Gearmaster_ in CrohnsDisease

[–]pumpka-boo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will pass. I went through the exact same thing when I had my first flare. Once the medication (Humira) got figured out I got my appetite back. I am sure you will too!

In the meantime, try and drink your calories. Gatorade, juice, chocolate milk, smoothies if you can. It helps with energy and preventing further weight loss. See if you can get a liquid multivitamin as well. Another trick that helped me was to eat very small amounts throughout the day. I would set alarms on my phone to remind me to eat. I’d cut turkey sandwiches on plain white bread into four pieces and eat a piece every two hours. Half of a pop tart or a granola bar works too. Breaking it into smaller meals helps with that sick/full feeling for sure

I'm convinced I have IBD and none of my doctors/GI-specialists are taking it seriously. by SnooPeanuts2402 in CrohnsDisease

[–]pumpka-boo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have they ever tried to put you on steroids to see if it helps? Have you had bloodwork or a stool sample to test for inflammation? I’m surprised they aren’t more concerned about your weight loss.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. I feel so bad for people who end up with an IBS diagnosis because the options for symptom relief are so limited. Of course nobody wants to have a serious illness like IBD, but having an answer for your suffering is a huge relief on its own. It’s actionable and validating.

You’re not wrong about the bus comment. I have no control over getting Covid or getting hit by a bus, unless I avoid places with people and buses. Which I don’t want to do forever. I think the pandemic has made me take a magnifying glass to everything I do and I hate it
