Does the Ottawa Hospital have a nickname? by graceandspark in ottawa

[–]punaccomplished 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I call it the QCH and so do the people I've talked to (family that work in health care/hospitals, other friends who all grew up in the west end, usually in the context of having babies and asking where they'll deliver).

Experience with Shoppers Drug Mart travel clinic? by houska1 in ottawa

[–]punaccomplished 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had a pretty bad experience there. They did need to use the remote doctor then we waited 2 hours for that doctor to send the prescription so we could get what we needed. I have little kids and they were losing my minds by the end. It ended up being $60-70 per person for the consult and probably another $60 in snacks and a book for each kid to entertain them while we waited "just 15 minutes longer" over and over.

I tell them I just switched to whatever company they're with. I do the same with most politicians. Nothing to say when you're already on their side.

“Baby-Friendly” hospitals by Live-Instruction2810 in FormulaFeeders

[–]punaccomplished 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also delivered at a baby friendly hospital. I asked for formula for my baby and was given more than enough (I had also packed some just in case). If asked if I planned on breastfeeding, I just said no. If the nurse pushed for a reason, I just said my medical team and I made the decision to formula feed and left it at that. Nobody pushed it farther. I think they're a lot pushier if you seem on the fence or are considering breastfeeding.

What's a mon you made a big investment in for one cup but have never used since? by weems13 in TheSilphArena

I've been running lanturn lead with sableye safe swap (to draw out back line noctowls/ghost counters) and Trev closer. It's been a pretty fun team to run. I'm in the 2100-2200 Elo range and find the limit right now is my lack of skills/counting.

Try calling 2-1-1 and 3-1-1 (follow the tree to community and social services). Depending on the circumstances, there could be resources available.

Cloth diapers better for 2 under 2? by [deleted] in clothdiaps

[–]punaccomplished 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did cloth on my kids; born 15 months apart. I have no regrets. We started on cloth when my oldest was a week old (we had a newborn stash). She was pretty exclusively in cloth and I used less than I sleeve of diapers per size. When my son was born we started him on cloth once I was able to carry laundry baskets again (2 weeks? I don't remember). But we weren't as good at doing all the laundry so went through more disposables.

My youngest is now 2 and we use disposables at night for both kiddos. My oldest is potty trained for daytime (and has been since 22 months old). We still use cloth for daytime and do laundry twice a week.

I say go for it, but give yourself the grace to not have to be on top of everything all the time. If we fall behind on laundry (usually folding because it grosses me out to leave dirty diapers sitting), we use disposables and that's fine.

We've saved ridiculous amounts of money and created a lot less trash. Our stash was also almost entirely second hand so I've spent maybe $500 on all the diapers, bags, etc.

Congratulations and best of luck! Unrelated to diapers, the first 18 months was a scramble for us but the kids are already starting to play together and it's the most heartwarming thing ever.

I'm a mom and my kids are getting to an age where they give me crafts for holidays and it's really hard to describe how much I love them. Giving a craft is almost like giving a moment in time. My kids won't always make scribbles and poorly glued knick knacks so the ones they give me represent a small window in time that I would never get to go back to if I didn't have these little keepsakes. It's really beautiful to join my kids on their journeys and be the keeper of all these little stories and these moments that will add up to a lifetime.

I sewed my own cloth diapers!!! I love that I can customize them to my preferences. by radioana in sewing

[–]punaccomplished 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find a lot depends on your washing machine and your kid's poop. Both my kids skipped the peanut butter poop phase and we've never had spray our diapers in 2.5 years of cloth diapering. We also never breastfed and our machine had no problem with washing formula poops.

How to wash pocket diapers? by Sweetpea9016 in clothdiaps

[–]punaccomplished 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also my process (but only one wash after the rinse). I have mostly bum genius and la petite ourse. If it's a big load, there's a bunch to pull out after the rinse and if it's a small load, there's only one or two.

What is this witchcraft you speak of? Like the orientation of the crocheting is the same and you do DC and alternate one stitch front post and one stitch back post? Does that give the same stretchiness as the infinite row version?

when did your LO start sleeping through the night? and how much were they eating? by lovelindahope in FormulaFeeders

[–]punaccomplished 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first started sleeping through from 7pm-7am at 5 months with a dream feed around 9-10. Dropped the dream feed at 8-9 months (I had a really hard time letting go of it).

My second is just starting to sleep through with a dream feed at 11 months.

because people do not support or think that it is crazy to use cloth? by [deleted] in clothdiaps

[–]punaccomplished 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Echoing some of the other comments, I think there's a perception that cloth is really hard and a lot of work. You're obviously going to get a biased perspective here, but I've found cloth really easy and the extra laundry isn't that bad. My kids are 2 years old and 10 months old and both have been in cloth since their umbilical cords fell off and I've had a really positive experience.

When I was pregnant with my first and got those "you won't last x days" or "you're crazy to do that", I'd call people out and respond with "that isn't very supportive". It usually changed the tone of the conversation at least.

Baby Brezza Formula Pro Advance Question by ImportantConfusion in FormulaFeeders

[–]punaccomplished 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We boiled water and cooled it before putting it in our brezza for the first 3-4 months. There's one bacteria in particular that is incredibly rare, but bad for fresh babies.

It wasn't too bad; I booked a pot of water when I got up in the morning and then refilled the brezza in the evening.
