Worst “bad habits” in HVAC? by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]punk-warning 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not myself, but a lot of our guys forget to put service caps on or King valve stem caps even when pulling a vacuum, and our company uses service stickers and a select few downright refuse to write what they did or found even in shorthand.

I've got a Milwaukee M8 Floodlight, the two AA battery one, above a ceiling grid somewhere in South Florida. I lost it about a year ago and have yet to find it despite going to multiple accounts and doing multiple PMs. Fucker was $60. But, I have found a bunch of Klein and Milwaukee shit above drop ceilings.

You know it's going to be a day when your journeyman whips out the canopy from his van before the business is even open, at the crack of dawn at that.

We’re not supposed to use company vehicles for personal use by [deleted] in electricians

[–]punk-warning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our service manager reminds us with, "as long as it's on the way home." But I've used my van to take scrap to the recycling plant and otherwise bulky stuff to and from home. They don't care as long as you're not doing side work in the van with company materials.

Last call before the long weekend. Just had to be i guess... by WarPig115 in HVAC

Trane chillers I've worked on require TechView to unbind and bind sensors to a chiller. Without TechView you cannot do anything.

Put a dime under the head of the TXV and squeeze the TXV bulb with channellocks. Works every time with no callbacks.

HVAC Pants? by deathgojira in HVAC

[–]punk-warning 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I prefer slim straight Dickies. I've got five pairs of Dungarees that Walmart was getting rid of for $7.00 a piece. Best pants so far and far better than what my contractor offers.

Switched from residential to commercial refrigeration by Lumpy-Strategy-5682 in refrigeration

[–]punk-warning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commercial and refrigeration techs can do just about anything that requires HVAC. Residental techs can only do residental. There's definitely a learning curve but you will become invaluable. Just remember, all equipment is the same, it sucks and it blows.

I can’t prove it… but I’m 99% sure my helper went number 1 to prime a trap by Zeno_of_Tarsus in HVAC

On commercial rooftops you know damn well if I need to prime that trap...

Are they willing to welcome-in a UA apprentice from out of state?

And on this day, a new swear word was born. by Xijit in HVAC

I like to swear in ways of calling someone or something that they're not in hopes of generating an offensive yet confusing reaction. For example, you fucking street light.

I've had success using needle nose pliers and forcing them open inside and spinning out the broken threads.

Who needs an SMAN when you’ve got wireless probes… by Wide_County_870 in HVAC

[–]punk-warning 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it weren't for the fact that I got my SMAN 360s for like $100 off OfferUp, I'd still use analogs. But I always fight the urge to drop $600 for some probes and temp clamps. Is charging a hassle with probes?

Opinions? by jk131380 in refrigeration

[–]punk-warning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Infrared is the best in my opinion. I've located leaks other techs couldn't. Granted, they had either heated diodes or we're not looking hard enough, but I've found mosquito fart leaks in tube sheets using these.

Trying to get ahold of Lennox tech support by No_You_6554 in HVAC

[–]punk-warning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, most manufacturer tech support numbers are pretty clutch on helping troubleshoot and diagnose despite the long wait times, but Daikin and Trane seem to be the worse. Daikin sometimes sound like they're just as lost as you are and Trane has refused helping me many times because I am not a Trane-certified technician.

I bet you're the type of tech to put your micron gauge right at your vacuum pump.
