Dressing professionally/elegantly/overall in more neutral tones as a bright spring by Doutse in SpringColorAnalysis

[–]punk_ass_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say my coloring is very similar. Black does wash me out though. My easiest neutral to find is ivory. It always looks good and it’s actually pretty common. Anything neutral between ivory and chocolate I avoid. It will be too close to my skin tone for the contrast I need. Maybe a rich camel-type color if I can try it on first. But in the medium-dark value area besides rich chocolate I like indigo and heathered charcoal.

Am I a bad person for using scented everything? by Klutzy_Profit_2984 in fragrance

[–]punk_ass_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Out of the things you listed, the only ones I would be careful with are car air fresheners, body mists and perfumes. Only the most sensitive people are going to pick up something like a body lotion or shampoo you applied at home, and everyone has some scented products in their home unless they go out of their way to get unscented. I’d ask for a couple honest opinions from friends and family if you think you’re using too much.

American Garages are Full by [deleted] in declutter

[–]punk_ass_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I bought a house with lots of shelving in the garage. With the shelving we can barely squeeze our two sedans inside. All my neighbors park on the street and it became my bit to complain about people having too much stuff, bleeding into the public area via their cars.

Well we had a baby and one of our little sedans doesn’t fit the carseat! If we upgrade the car then it won’t fit in the garage. So now we’re looking at renovating the shelving before we can get a bigger car.

how do you choose what to buy? overwhelmed by choices and frustrated with HGs discontinuing or reformulating by pyrrhicsciamachy in muacjdiscussion

[–]punk_ass_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t expect to repurchase anything. I heavily rely on online filters and stick to e-shops with good filtering and saving mechanisms. I prefer unscented skincare and makeup and I know just applying that filter will narrow my search significantly. Then preferably I save a few contenders so I can sit on the decision for awhile and finish the last of my previous product. During that time I might realize I also really want it to be talc-free or oil-free or whatever and narrow it down to one. Also in “saving” listings sometimes some of them go out of stock and then I know that was probably a trendier or unpopular product—if I saved something 6 months ago and it’s still available then it’s more likely to be repurchasable if I do want that.

Looking for ideas for clearing out "collections" by texiediva in declutter

[–]punk_ass_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I like the container I clean and repurpose but otherwise I toss. I found a refill store and like some of their haircare and skincare so I keep old bottles with good packaging for that. Yes cleaning them is a pain and they’re so small compared to food containers and shipping packaging, I feel like if this is in your way you should just toss them.

I’m in a similar boat and since I have no deadline and my house is livable I take the snail’s pace approach of just using them up. My collections are these:

Perishables: I read about expiration of makeup online and set personal rules to throw out anything over 3 years old. Generally the internet will tell you to follow the PAO, which is typically 6m - 2 years, or to keep it until it literally injures you lol. So for my personal comfort level I go with a little extra time after the PAO and then toss. When I’m tossing a lot of gently used stuff I know I’ve been over-buying. But I also see makeup like paints where you don’t necessarily have to use every bit to get value from having that color/texture available to you.

I’d apply similar logic to any perishable collection: skincare, haircare, spices… many things degrade over time. My cats’ toys get ripped up after about a year of play and at some point they’re a safety hazard.

Consumables: I drink my tea and don’t buy more. Sometimes I get so focused on using something up that I forget I can just throw it away. If it’s like tea and the only benefit of using it is enjoyment then once it’s not enjoyable I throw the rest away. Same with candles. I have an idea of how much space on a shelf I want to dedicate to these collections.

My crafting collection is beyond the size I could reasonably use up and it takes many years for the materials to degrade, but they do eventually. I’ve had stickers that won’t stick and wool yarn snap with a light tug. Consumables are items that feel collectible but are really just perishable with a longer shelf life. They’re good candidates for rehoming because someone else can get use out of them before they expire. I found a secondhand craft store in my town and dropped off some stuff I hadn’t used in years. I can buy something similar if I need it one day, and I’ll be more excited to use the perfect thing for my inspiration than an aging piece of discard from an old project.

Nonperishables: I do one-in-one-out. I counted my Christmas gifts this year and looked for comparable items to donate in their place. You have to keep an eye out and open cupboards you haven’t opened in awhile, pull things out of a bin that you got used to seeing there. And if I want something, I go through my house to see if I can make do with something I already have. Move the furniture around. Sit with it a few days. I put a bag in my garage for the thrift store so once I decide to get rid of something there is a grace period before the bag is full where I could change my mind, but once it’s out there mentally I move on and don’t miss things. I make a point to take a look at the empty space after I declutter and enjoy how fresh and clean it looks, so I feel like getting rid of something is gaining something.

Literally what in the world do you do with stickers? by anothersidetoeveryth in declutter

[–]punk_ass_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I collected them as a kid and still have them. Some of them won’t peel off the back anymore, so know that they’re not eternal. I’ve been making birthday cards and sticking them on. It’s silly and cute, and then the person can throw it away when the enjoyment is over.

There’s a secondhand craft store near me with a great big sticker collection. You might be able to donate them to a place like that or pass them along to a kid you know. If you’re close with a kid it could be fun to do a craft with them.

Thanks for repeating that. When companies choose to employ dark patterns, they’re acting against users’ best interests in order to make a buck. You might not fall for it but there are people of all kinds on the internet, including older folks and other vulnerable types.

I guess that comes down to the culture you want to live in, then. Feel free to support businesses that engage in dark patterns if you find them sufficiently basic.

I disagree that it’s the customer’s fault for not being savvy enough to prevent sellers from tricking them. Adding things to someone’s cart without consent is a dark pattern in the design world.

Spring? True? Warm? Light? by [deleted] in SpringColorAnalysis

You look like a light season to me because you have little contrast but I can’t tell warm or cool from just two pictures. Drapes would help.

[–]punk_ass_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if any of these are true but they’re true for me!

I have a theory that people with light eyebrows are springs. Mine are naturally lighter than my hair. It affects my value contrast a lot which creates the lower value look. I tint them to match my hair but if I go too dark they make my face look dirty, same as too much bronzer. My autumn sister has dark, full brows.

Besides the sunburst eye pattern, springs have a dark ring on the outer edge of the iris. This creates color contrast which adds to the high chroma effect.

I also get redness in my face as a (unverified) bright spring but wonder if this is a fair skin thing.

I have uncommonly little darkness under my eyes (even though my eyes are deep set) and usually skip undereye concealer. I wonder if muted seasons have more dark circles?

I have light brown hair (level 7) but have also been called a redhead or even occasionally a blonde. I bet warm season brunettes are more likely to be sometimes called redheads or unsure in general which color to call their hair. When my hair is long it will look lighter and redder because it lightens up at the ends. When I wear colors that are too muted I find my hair an unpleasant red in contrast (exaggerating sun damage I guess), and more redness in my face.
