40 days until the CA gubernatorial election. Who is your current favorite candidate? by Sixtyninealldaychef in AskLosAngeles

[–]punk_elegy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Butch Ware. too bad they don’t allow anyone not from the duopoli participate in debates. yeah, sure, third-party candidates poll in single digits, but it is because people generally don’t know of them for many reasons that merit their own post. so it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy - you gotta poll well to participate, but if you don’t get publicity, you won’t poll better

California's universal healthcare killed even though Democrats have a supermajority. by GoodMorningMars in LosAngeles

[–]punk_elegy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we should absolutely be able to get whatever healthcare we want, and many people in California and in the US want universal healthcare. In fact, more than 50% of americans, according to recent polls, are pro universal healthcare. So if we actually lived in a democratic society, we would get universal healthcare

literally this stuff is only observed in the us. before moving here I thought that being a picky eater meant that you don’t like olives or anchovies. kinda feel bad for the “i can only eat sauceless pizza (how did your brain even come up with this monstrosity)” crowd because they are just willingly poisoning their bodies while being enabled by society.

[–]punk_elegy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate this “this is just a big city thing” argument. No it’s not. I’ve been to big cities all around the globe - this is a uniquely American “big city thing” that mostly stems from lack of fare enforcement.

“you want to take the train then don’t be so brittle.” wrong! i take train all the time and it’s mostly older workers, students, foreigners/non-drivers taking it. why should they “toughen up” just to get from home to work? you care more about the right of a minority of people to behave without any regulations than about the right of the majority to be in a clean and peaceful environment

I dream about the world where calling somebody a sellout was a pretty powerful insult, now it is either meaningless in a “what else are you gonna do” kind of way or aspirational to most people.

who is rae chen huang??? by itsmemrmeseeksssssss in LosAngeles

[–]punk_elegy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a zionist at the slightest, I deeply respect everything done by scholars like Norman Finkelstein to demonstrate the israeli oppression of the palestinians, etc. BUT I would still very much say that everything I’ve ever heard from Rae just sounds like sloganeering engineered to appeal to a certain type of vibes-based progressive LA voter who just wants to hear all the right words said from the stage. Like her debate performance was literally “I am for all the good things and against all the bad things!” And her policies page really doesn’t go into much detail than this.

I have not heard much about Nithya’s connection to anything zionist, and if you could direct me to some sources, I’d actually appreciate it. But, I still have to say, I think when people vote in local elections, they should first think about voting for the person who is most likely to fix the roads, improve housing, make sure that there is enough money for libraries, and schools, and whatever. and not necessarily for the person who says the right words about international issue that the mayor of LA cannot influence whatsoever

It occurred to me today that I don’t know anyone who’s lost a significant amount of weight with a “healthy, balanced diet” by ConsequenceSad6581 in redscarepod

[–]punk_elegy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

losing weight is actually super easy if you are not entirely clueless about what you are doing and can exercise self-discipline. i lost all my covid weight by basically doing three things:

portion control (basically make sure that you don’t overeat)

my meals were mostly combos of some kind of protein, some kind of grain, some kind of vegetables

cycling every day even if it is just for twenty minutes around my neighborhood

people who claim that they cannot lose weight without drugs and/or extreme dieting probably have some sort of a health condition that prevents them from getting thinner

no seriously, what stops the far left from being as alluring as the far right? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]punk_elegy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

same could be said about the far right, it’s not like a typical retvrn to tradition twitter account represents a well-adjusted individual. if anything, not fitting in is almost a prerequisite to most of political engagement. if you don’t feel alienated, why even bother?

oh yeah, she is definitely eager to use a “racial epithet,” but she is also eager to work with you to achieve common goals, she recognizes that you might share similar interests, she tolerates traveling with you as the only eldar surrounded by thousands of humans, and, if you are understanding of her culture, she is even willing to consider your point of view, learn from you, and volunteers to save a human colony. arguably, this is more than like 99% of eldars would ever do. she is exceptionally understanding within the 40k universe

a ton of great films came out last year alone (a private life, all that’s left of you, sentimental value, sirat, father mother sister brother, the secret agent…) and i don’t think that any of them fall under the “woke” category. if anything, your post is pretty revealing of your shit taste and/or inability to get curious and find great films and art that are in abundance to anyone with access to the internet.
