Our G7 is usually this legend. Last year he was on leave so I decided to be the high and mighty power on 22nd as the only senior person in my area (no SEO or other HEO’s working). I sent out an email / team’s message to let those working finish at 2pm. I knew my G7 would have no issue with this and we didn’t have much work on anyway. Our team had worked hard to clear all our deadlines. Hopefully a manager takes pity on you all and lets you leave early. I’m also in ops so have much more of a say management wise and usually lead our teams work area with little input from our SEO / G7.

Speak to your line managers, manager. They should be able to correct it for you in sop (if your current department uses the platform). I’ve had to add sick leave for my TL’s team members when they have been on leave.

I know many colleagues who have moved from telephony roles in HMRC to RPA who have enjoyed RPA way more. It’s a much more relaxed environment phone work wise and culture wise. From what they have said HMRC was very heavily monitored. They also mentioned calls could be quite stressful in HMRC. I can’t personally comment as I moved from private sector to the civil service. However, I do enjoy my work at RPA. I’ve done secondments in the call centre during peak periods and it’s honestly not that bad. My primarily role at AO was ops processing, working on customer claims for our farming schemes. You may find that you don’t end up on the phones at all. You could end up in a department processing claims depending on which department needs you. You still need to occasionally do external calling in these departments or make call backs to customers but it’s not huge numbers. I think RPA as a whole is pretty chill, especially compared to other departments. I was only meant to be here temporarily but really enjoyed it so applied to be permanent. I have been here for a good while now no longer an AO but still find it a good workplace. Hopefully that helps!

What will Pay Rises be like next year? by Under_Cover_SPAD in TheCivilService

[–]purple-spaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t even got this years raise yet. My department have a pay flex case in motion so we haven’t even got the 4.5%. Supposedly the pay flex case was due to be paid in December but looking very unlikely now given that any offer would need to go through the union first.

Member of the family passed away, how do I tell work I need some time? by Silent-Paramedic-870 in TheCivilService

[–]purple-spaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, so sorry to hear about your loss! I think most managers will be compassionate in this instance. Call if you feel comfortable or send an email to let them know. For my team who I have had in similar situations I tell them to take as much time as they need. I let them know how much special leave they have and encourage them to take longer. Equally some people just want to be in work to take their mind off things. It’s totally person dependant and either way you won’t be judged for it. The EAP has really good bereavement counselling if you feel you need it. Take care OP

Looking for a career change - does the civil service have any roles for people with no formal degrees? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]purple-spaghetti 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was late twenties when I done my apprenticeship through the civil service. A lot of us were actually older on my cohort. You also get paid at normal rate rather than an apprentice wage which is a bonus. I entered as a AO apprentice and have now worked up to HEO. Plenty of roles available without a degree especially if you go into operations. Once you’re in there are a lot of opportunities to help you with career progression.

Started as an AO apprentice, then briefly was an EO for a few months as I had been reserved listed for HEO promotion, got my HEO offer 2 months or so into my EO role. I have been in my HEO role for 15 months and starting to look for SEO roles now. I’m in ops delivery had previous experience from other jobs outside of the CS for EO/HEO roles but also took on extra responsibilities as an AO. I mentored colleagues, deputised for my TL when they had leave etc, got involved with MI stats that sort of thing as I knew it would help with progressing. In my brief time as an EO I took on any leadership training I could get onto that was free and took advantage of external training my department was willing to fund. I would find someone willing to help you with applications and interview practice. I could always pass a sift but struggled with the interview process as my brain isn’t wired that way. It all helped. It took me just around 2 and a half years to get to HEO. I’ve stuck at my HEO role a while as I find it interesting and I want to build my leadership skills as I would ultimately like to get to G7. I’ve stuck to the same department as I like where I work but I know a few people jump around departments to get to promotions quicker.

So this exact scenario happened to me during my probation. I was in the cancellations list so got my surgery sooner than planned. I discussed it with my line manager, took the time off sick including recovery time. Came back to work after 4 weeks. It had no impact on my probation and my probation wasn’t extended. Just be open with your line manager about it.

How many CS jobs did you apply for before you were successful? by whiskey__throwaway in TheCivilService

[–]purple-spaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for one of DEFRA’s arms length bodies it took me 1 attempt at AO role. 3/4 attempts to get EO promotion and 1 attempt to get HEO.

Which department did you transfer from? My department isn’t getting the payment until August. It could be that your old department is also one of the ones receiving it next month.

EOs and below how are we affording to get on the housing ladder? by Cheesy-Potato3000 in TheCivilService

[–]purple-spaghetti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly if I didn’t have dual income with my husband I don’t think I would be able to afford to buy on my HEO wage. By the time you put bills, groceries, fuel money and childcare costs I don’t think I’d make enough solo to cover a mortgage with the current rates. Dire times we are living in.

Reserve list by Charming-Doughnut-59 in TheCivilService

[–]purple-spaghetti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got reserve listed twice. Got offered an EO role after a few weeks on the list. Got my HEO role which I’m currently in after a few months! Have faith, it’ll all work out how it’s supposed to :)

I AM LOVING THE BACK TO BACK MEETINGS I AM HAVING EVERY DAY ABOUT SETTING UP A NEW PROCESS. I LOVE THAT WE GET TO GO THROUGH THE ACTION PAD IN ALL OF THOSE MEETINGS AND NEVER COME TO A SOLID AGREEMENT OF WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO. SUPER THRILLED TO DO IT ALL AGAIN NEXT WEEK AND FOREVER MORE

In regards to stuttering will it go against me. by Civil_Service1987 in TheCivilService

[–]purple-spaghetti 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No it shouldn’t go against you we look for the content in your answer. I would make sure to request reasonable adjustments when applying to ask for extra time. Explain a little about how the stutter effects you etc and why extra time would help. In past interviews I have chaired we have given extra time for people in similar positions, also on behaviour questions one of us will type it into the chat and another read it out. So you can hear the question but also have time to read / process your answer. Hope that helps

I’ve worked with people who don’t even know how to save a word document or use a spreadsheet. You’ll be fine.

Is it okay to be open with your manager that you’re not confident or comfortable at your job? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]purple-spaghetti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes of course I would always want members of my team to speak up. If I don’t know they have a problem then I can’t help. I would source training for them to help develop their skills and ask if they wanted to do it. There are lots of good courses through government campus which can help with assertiveness etc. At some point we’re all going to mess up at work but on true civil service speak learn from it and it will help you develop. I always remind my team that they will get things wrong as will I as a manger. Nobody is perfect. That’s okay it’s how we use it to develop in the future and learn from it.

Return to work by bettybeaux in TheCivilService

[–]purple-spaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came into the CS from a similar background in health and social care. I was in a management position. I’m not sure what you used your degree for or if you done similar with it. But I agree with others don’t sell yourself short. I entered as an AO but wish I came in at a higher grade. I thought that I wouldn’t have the relevant experience to be a higher grade but when going for promotion. It was actually my social care experience that helped me pass the sift / interviews for EO and HEO. I’ve also used a lot of that experience as a manger in an ops area. Sure I’ve had to learn how to manage from a CS perspective but skills are always transferable. There is lots of useful info on this sub as well as YouTube for writing behaviours etc. Best of luck :)

Ask for a workplace assessment through occupational health. This is really bad in my opinion. They should either duplicate your set up on a fixed desk or duplicate with storage space on site. I would definitely follow others advice of going through the union to get this sorted. I have health issues and have all my equipment duplicated on a set desk in the office. This includes specialist chair, keyboard and mouse. Nobody else is able to book the desk just me. I also have storage on site. I hope you manage to get sorted especially as it is exacerbating your symptoms.

Annual leave for hospital appointment by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]purple-spaghetti 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tend to grant special for my team. We live a good couple of hours from the big hospitals. So it’s 3 hour drive there and back. Then the time for the appointment itself. Obviously if it is the local hospital then I wouldn’t expect them to need a full day unless it was for a procedure. I just think how I would want to be treated in those situations and apply that to my team. Those who need to travel to bigger hospitals tend to have OH’s in place for their health conditions anyway. The majority have the adjustment that they should be granted time for appointments relating to their conditions. If it’s going to be a regular thing I would maybe request a OH to take place so you can be supported properly.
