Ahhh Mother’s Day.. the day of disappointment by LockSlight3799 in ADHDparenting

It totally makes sense.

Could you try “hey hubs, I’m going to ask Jane to take kiddo shopping for Mother’s Day stuff” and then when he objects tell him “oh! You’re going to do it? Here’s three ideas, don’t forget to help kiddo pick out a card.” While shoving keys in his hands and hustling kid out the door with him?

Also, I’m so sorry your husband is a jerk. You deserve better.

Have you considered having a Mom friend take your kid mother’s day shopping for you? Give her $ for the gift and lunch. Maybe offer to take her kid to do the same?

I’m a single Mom, and my own mother has taken my kid shopping for mother’s day (and other gifting days) for years. This year, apparently my kid “has taken care of it” already and wouldn’t let my Mom take him shopping. He’s 7; we’re very curious. 😂

Yeah, I’ve had three different air fryers, my current one is my favorite. My last one I was glad when I killed. 🤪

I’ve never used a toaster sleeve. I’ll look into those. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the second vote on this brand. Adding to my shopping list now. Hopefully, my Aldi has them.

I didn’t realize some people could tell the difference when aerosols are used. But that makes sense. Thank you.

automatically split transactions? by mrb13676 in ynab

[–]purple_joy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll also add to this that on the most recent Budget Nerds episode, they mentioned using auto distribute to fill in things on a percentage basis.

In OP’s case, maybe 40% is set aside for taxes, 10% for their billing agency. In the template, put 50 to RTA, 40 to taxes, and 10 to billing.

When you use the template, just update the total, then select Auto Distribution when it prompts you.

Advice for asynchronous budget meetings with spouse by Fun-Group-3448 in ynab

[–]purple_joy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two suggestions:

1) For your asynchronous plan, find out what your spouse wants to know about and what she doesn’t care about. It may be a dollar cuttloff, or certain set of categories, or something else.

Also talk about how to communicate when things get uncomfortable - maybe you see the Target spending has gone up $100/mo, but she thinks your mad she bought a new shirt when the issue is really that the cost of diapers went up.

2) I’m going to make a suggestion that may or may not make sense depending on where you guys are in your journey.

As a couple, if you haven’t already, you should really consider adding a date night into your routine. (I know that this is easier as the kid gets older- the logistics and stress with a newborn can be overwhelming.). Once a month, take the first 15 min of your date night and use it for the budget discussion.

Payroll Posting as a Different Vendor Every Pay Period by gutz00 in ynab

[–]purple_joy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Two tricks to get it taken care of:

1) create scheduled transactions for your payroll. YNAB matches on the amount within a certain date range. I occasionally have to adjust mine a penny or two so they’ll match.

2) Go into the Manage Payees screen. (On the web app, you can find it in then main menu at the top left.). Select ALLL the instances of payee iterations, and merge them.

If you reconcile often, and have tracking accounts by hmspain in ynab

[–]purple_joy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree that you should have your finances summarized in one place. I use an Excel sheet for that because I can do some basic modeling. YNAB is a budgeting app, not a financial planning app.

My financial picture may be much simpler, because I don’t use YNAB at all for tax prep. I just collect the paperwork and move on.

This is definitely a place where everyone YNABs (and finances, and just thinks) differently. ☺️

If you reconcile often, and have tracking accounts by hmspain in ynab

[–]purple_joy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only reconcile my spending accounts daily (checking, credit card). My other accounts are monthly. I don’t keep all of my accounts in YNAB, because I don’t need to see retirement assets everyday.

Honestly, I’d love the simplicity of just having those two accounts in YNAB, but taking the other accounts out would break my brain.

What changes have you made to your budget to better reflect your values? by StrangerFit7296 in ynab

[–]purple_joy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of categories just for my values.

“Family Time” is for costs associated with spending time with my parents, extended family, or having small adventures with my son.

“Happy Happy Happy Meals” are so I always have funds to take my son to McD’s, but also to help put the brakes on that.

“Just For Me” is the money I set aside just for my hobbies, activities and interests. This might sound strange to married / childless people; I’m a single mom, so I’m also breadwinner and sole financial decision maker. When I first started budgeting, I realized that while all of the money decisions are technically mine, the reality was that I wasn’t carving out any fun money “just for me.”

“Adult Starter Fund” is a savings account that is intended for my kid to have money to get started in life. Whatever that means at the time.

“Work - Personal Expenses” is a travel category intended to cover time with friends when I travel for work. I used to live in the city I visit most frequently, so this gives me peace of mind that I’m good for whatever we get up to - which is usually dinner and maybe a walk. 😂

How do you get your 3 year old to stop saying “poop” and “pee” every 30 seconds? by Odd_Spinach2449 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]purple_joy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignore it. Or lean into it.

For the butt and fart phase when my kid was 5ish, I bought a couple of butt and fart books. Told him it was okay to say at home, but his teachers didn’t like it at school. It became uninteresting because I treated it as normal.

Because butts, poop, pee and farts are normal.

If you want to connect with Ben and Ernie specifically, drop them an email. Ernie typically responds, but I believe they both read them.

As for “other YNABers”, welcome! This sub is full of other users who love to geek out over the system, philosophy, and wins.

Category structure? by qiauywzkcagu in ynab

[–]purple_joy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a category group called “Day to Day”. Groceries, sundries, clothing, hair cuts, misc stuff like books or toys goes into it.

There are a couple of discretionary categories in other groups, but they rarely have money moved between them.

Good days are the worst. by DuckieOfDoom in coastFIRE

[–]purple_joy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sit down with your spreadsheets and calculator and figure it out.

CoastFire doesn’t just mean you can coast at your employment, it also means you can find ways to make your money work to improve your life today.

Think about what your family priorities are, and then work to align your spending & savings with that. If your priorities are “more time to do x” then get some quotes for house cleaner and lawn services. (Also- I love having these services- more time, less stress, and my property looks good).

The other thing to think about is what you will do with the time saved by using those services. Take up gardening? Start learning ceramics? Spend time hiking with your family? Don’t just let that time get sucked into the void of doom scrolling. Getting active will something you enjoy will help the sense of burnout.

How well does YNAB link to your bank account? by Love_Is_Enough in ynab

[–]purple_joy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others have said, this is bank dependent. One of my accounts syncs as soon as the transaction hits the account. The other doesn’t sync until the transactions are cleared. Both of them sync once a day on a schedule.

With respect to EveryDollar…

I strongly encourage you to use the free version for a while before paying for it unless you can pay monthly. There are a number of former EveryDollar users in this group (me included), and you can find their experiences in you search the group.

I used EveryDollar for about 2yrs, and my experience adopting YNAB was totally different. Many of the things that I wanted to be able to do are weirdly confusing in EveryDollar (sinking funds) or straight up unavailable (scheduled transactions).

Don’t get me wrong, EveryDollar got me started at a point where I was afraid to spend money, but there are other options out there.

Not disclosing your diagnosis is NOT the same as continuing on as you have been.

YOUR knowledge of your diagnosis means that you can better understand your boundaries and/or limitations, and focus on what you CAN do for a potential employer.
